Finishes quest/m1/hotkeys.md.

Problem

An operator playing a game can't fire a replay, save a clip, switch scenes, or start a recording without alt-tabbing to the studio. Arrange in the preview has no keyboard nudge and no aspect lock. The snap and grid settings also reset every launch.

Approach

  • Actions (controls.rs). Cut, Transition, preview a scene, Replay, Save clip, and start/stop recording now live in one Controls type, and the panel buttons and the hotkeys both call it. Hotkeys fire on a thread of their own, not in the window's frame loop. A hotkey sends its key, and that thread reads what the key is bound to as it fires, under the state lock the window moves bindings through renames under, so a key cleared since does nothing and a scene renamed since is previewed by its new name. A hidden or occluded window (behind a full-screen game) may not draw at all, and a hotkey that waited on a frame would wait until the operator came back. Replay and Save clip use the Replay panel's picks, which moved into Controls so both callers can read them. A clip a hotkey saves shows how its save went in the status bar too, since the Replay panel may be hidden.
  • Global hotkeys (hotkeys.rs). Uses global-hotkey 0.9 (tauri-apps, maintained): RegisterEventHotKey on macOS, RegisterHotKey on Windows, and XGrabKey on X11. On Wayland, where the window's handle says so, hotkeys/portal.rs asks the XDG GlobalShortcuts portal through ashpd. A scene's shortcut is kept under an id named for its key, so a rename keeps whatever key the desktop assigned. It keeps one session per set of bindings, opening a new one only when they change, shows the triggers the desktop actually bound, and falls back to focused-only, saying so in the panel, when the portal is missing or its dialog is declined.
  • Hotkeys panel. Bind (the next key with modifiers; Escape, leaving the window, or leaving the panel cancels) and Clear for each fixed action and each scene. A key already bound to another action is refused, naming that action. A key the platform refuses shows why next to the action. A binding to a scene that no longer exists stays listed so it can be cleared. A scene's binding follows every rename the studio applies (an edit, undo, redo, or history seek): State now logs each edit's Collection::renames map, and the window drains it each frame. Every action starts unbound.
  • Focused-only fallback. Matched keys are taken from egui's input, repeats included, so they never also undo or nudge. A held key fires once.
  • Preview. Clicking or dragging in the preview focuses it. While focused, the arrow keys nudge the selected item 1 px (10 px with Shift), and a held key undoes as one step. Resizing a camera, display, window, image, media, broadcast, or replay source (or a clone of one) keeps its aspect ratio, and Shift flips that for any source. Snapping a locked resize snaps the axis whose snap moves the item least and derives the other from the shape, as long as no edge moves out of reach (snap.rs, with tests). An item a keyframe offsets snaps where it shows and keeps its shape at rest.
  • Settings. Snap, grid, and hotkey bindings persist in eframe's per-user store next to the existing Listen speaker pick, not in the scene file.

Impact

  • New Hotkeys panel (docked with Filters, Keyframes, and the rest).
  • Global hotkeys for Cut, Transition, Preview scene X, Replay, Save clip, and Start or stop recording. All start unbound.
  • In the focused preview, arrow keys nudge the selected item, and Shift moves it 10 px.
  • Resizing a source with a fixed shape keeps its aspect ratio, and Shift flips that.
  • The snap and grid settings now persist across launches (they used to reset).
  • Keypad keys are refused in the Hotkeys panel, saying so, since egui reports keypad 1 as the top-row 1.
  • The window now runs eframe's handler on an event loop the studio owns (eframe::create_native), so keypad keys are noted before egui sees them.
  • README.md documents the panel, each platform's behavior (no macOS grant needed; the Wayland portal), and where settings are kept.
  • The scene file format is unchanged. There is no wire impact and no public API (binary crate).
  • New dependencies: global-hotkey 0.9 on all platforms. On Linux only: ashpd 0.13 (global_shortcuts), futures-util, raw-window-handle 0.6, and x11rb 0.13. On Windows only: windows-sys 0.61. winit 0.30 is now a direct dependency (eframe's version, no features of its own). All except global-hotkey were already in the lock graph.

Choices made without asking

  • No Input Monitoring grant on macOS. The plan expected an event tap that needs the grant. The maintained crate the plan prefers uses Carbon's RegisterEventHotKey instead, which fires system-wide with no TCC permission. The grant would only be needed for media keys, which egui can't capture anyway. The README says no permission is needed and notes that macOS 15+ refuses Option-only or Option+Shift-only hotkeys (shown as a refusal in the panel).
  • "Going live" moved to the destinations quest. The studio has no start/stop-live control today: it publishes from launch whenever --connect is given. A hotkey needs an action to fire. This PR adds "Going live and stopping are actions the Hotkeys panel can bind" to quest/m0/destinations.md, where the go-live control will land, and deletes this quest.
  • Settings store: eframe's, not a new config file. The speaker pick already uses it. It lives in the platform's app data directory (~/Library/Application Support/moq-studio, $XDG_DATA_HOME/moq-studio, %APPDATA%\moq-studio\data), not strictly the "config" directory the plan named. Reusing it avoids a second store and a directories dependency.
  • Recording is one toggle action, not separate start and stop actions, since every action starts unbound and one key is what an operator binds. A second press while the last recording is still finishing is refused, not turned into a new start.
  • Bound keys are swallowed on every platform (RegisterHotKey, Carbon, X grabs, and the portal all consume them), so the README tells operators to bind keys they don't type or play with.
  • Keys bind where they sit, resolved through the layout in use. A binding keeps the key as the layout names it, which the panel shows and the Wayland portal is asked for, and its position (egui's physical key). macOS registers the position directly (Carbon kVK codes). Windows maps its scancode through MapVirtualKeyExW with the thread's layout to the virtual key the layout puts there. X11 reads the keysyms on its keycode from the server's keymap and grabs one that global-hotkey resolves back to that keycode. The key pressed in the panel is then the key that fires on every layout, German Shift+7 included. On X11, a key no global-hotkey keysym names, such as German ö, is refused rather than grabbing another key. A key whose position egui doesn't report can't be bound. Bindings resolve when the studio starts and on each bind, so a layout switched later applies at the next start. On X11, global-hotkey releases a grab by looking its keysym up in the current layout, so once a layout change moves a held key, the studio keeps every grab as it is and the panel says once that the keys stay until a restart, rather than forgetting a key the X server still grabs.
  • Platform crates for the layout lookup: windows-sys 0.61 (Win32_UI_Input_KeyboardAndMouse) on Windows and x11rb 0.13 on Linux, both already in the lock graph. 0.13 is global-hotkey's x11rb, so default Linux builds compile only one.
  • Keypad keys are refused, not bound. egui-winit 0.36 folds Numpad0-9, NumpadEnter, NumpadDivide, NumpadSubtract, and NumpadAdd into their main keyboard keys and drops KeyEvent::location. On every platform, binding keypad 1 registered the top-row 1. A thin ApplicationHandler around eframe's notes keypad keys before egui hears them, and raw_input_hook clears those events' positions. The panel then refuses them by name and keeps waiting for a key. Binding them properly is planned as quest/m1/hotkeys-keypad.md, which this PR unblocks by dropping its link to the hotkeys quest. Since eframe only logs an error that stops a loop it doesn't run, the run fails when the loop ends without the window being asked to close.
  • Aspect lock covers images too. The plan said video sources, but an image has a fixed shape just as video does. The lock keeps the item's current ratio, not the source's native one.
  • ashpd 0.13, not 0.14. 0.14 moves to zbus 6, which would put a second D-Bus stack beside moq-video's 0.13 under pipewire.

Alternatives

  • Hand-written per-platform backends (an event tap, Win32, and X11): more code and a TCC grant, for nothing the crate lacks.
  • Firing hotkeys from the egui frame loop: simpler, but stalls while the window is hidden, which is exactly when hotkeys matter.
  • Polling-style hotkeys (as OBS does on Windows) so the game still sees the key: needs a keyboard hook or Input Monitoring on every platform. Not worth it while every action starts unbound.

Validation

  • just ci on macOS (Apple Silicon): passes on 74215c4834cada781b03d336b9bfeaefa46dde23, 263 tests, as on 4a24431 and 833ee5f. On 2fc7be1c94bac0a76e71884baced6031bef34600 (main merged, with #58's scene source) it passed with 261 tests. Cut and Transition now go through State::cut and State::transition, which feat(scene)!: a scene source draws another scene, or the program #58 made fallible, so a refused cut is reported like any other fired action. These include hotkeys::keypad::tests::keypad_keys_are_not_bound_as_their_twins (keypad 1 with NumLock on captures nothing, and the next frame's top-row 1 binds at Num1) and hotkeys::layout::tests::windows_registers_what_the_layout_puts_there, with German Shift+7, Y/Z, #, and ö from Microsoft's kbdgr.h. Also hotkeys::layout::tests::x11_grabs_what_the_layout_puts_there (German and AZERTY keymaps), hotkeys::tests::a_key_is_the_same_wherever_the_layout_names_it, snap::tests::a_locked_resize_*, snap::tests::a_posed_item_snaps_where_it_shows_and_keeps_its_shape_at_rest, and hotkeys::tests::bindings_follow_renames_at_once.
  • A launch smoke test on macOS on 02e0ecc, the first on the new event loop: setup opened and timed the encoders for 15 s with no warnings or errors. It was ended with a kill, so the close path and the new exit check were not exercised by a person.
  • hotkeys/layout.rs passed cargo clippy --all-targets with warnings denied for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, through a scratch crate that includes the file by path, on an earlier head. No CI runner builds Windows.
  • The Linux-only portal module passed clippy and its tests (a_scene_keeps_its_id_through_renames, triggers_name_keysyms, unchanged_bindings_keep_the_session) on macOS, through a scratch crate that includes the file by path with stub types, on 833ee5f. The new snap and layout tests are snap::tests::a_locked_snap_moves_no_edge_out_of_reach and hotkeys::layout::tests::x11_grabs_are_released_only_where_the_layout_still_has_them. Only CI's Linux runner compiles the Linux raw-window-handle branch.
  • Not verified by a person: pressing a bound key while another app has focus (on macOS, synthetic key events need an Accessibility/Automation grant this agent can't answer), pressing a keypad key in the panel, Windows, X11, a non-QWERTY layout, and a Wayland desktop's portal dialog.

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort. Round 10 reviewed head 74215c4834cada781b03d336b9bfeaefa46dde23 and reported no findings. Rounds 8 (833ee5f) and 9 (4a24431) reported none either.

The online review on 4a24431 raised one finding, fixed in 74215c4 and answered:

CodeRabbit confirmed the 4a24431 fixes on their threads.

CodeRabbit's review on 833ee5f accepted those fixes, withdrew the same-name scene and portal retry findings, and raised three more, all fixed in 4a24431 and answered:

CodeRabbit's review on 2fc7be1c94bac0a76e71884baced6031bef34600 raised 12 findings. Each is answered on its thread. 7 are fixed in 833ee5f and 5 refuted:

CodeRabbit's generic docstring-coverage check names no item. Every export this PR adds is documented.

Earlier rounds, on earlier heads:

Before the external review, a deadlock found in self-review on X11 was also fixed. The crate's event thread called the handler, which locked the hotkey map, while the window thread held that lock and waited on the X11 thread to register.

Follow-ups

  • The go-live hotkey, which now lives in the destinations quest.
  • Grab keys on X11 by keycode in the studio instead of through global-hotkey, which looks keysyms up in the current layout. Keys would then stay changeable after a layout change, and keys like German ö could be bound.

Walkthrough

The studio adds a Hotkeys panel for binding supported actions, with platform-specific global hotkey handling and focused-window fallback. Shared Controls dispatch scene, replay, clip, and recording actions. Scene rename history updates scene bindings. Preview resizing can preserve source aspect ratios, and focused previews support arrow-key nudging. Snapping and hotkey bindings are persisted with user settings. README and quest documentation are updated.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 833ee

Hotkeys, arrow nudging, aspect lock and persisted settings are added with no blocking defect found. Minor rough edges remain around cancelling key capture and surfacing failed clip saves. These are worth tidying but are not merge blockers.

Three P2 findings are attached: unchanged bindings recreate the Wayland session, non-US layouts register a different physical key, and snapping can distort an aspect-locked item with size keyframes.

Overall direction: Shared Controls and platform shortcut APIs fit the feature. Keep that approach, but correct the backend key/session semantics and coordinate-space mismatch.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review, including relevant pinned dependency code. I did not run quest context, quest check, tests, or platform/GPU interaction checks.

Follow-up to 2175742: the unchanged-portal-session and posed-aspect findings are fixed, and the logical-key change fixes the reported AZERTY letter case. One P2 remains in the revised conversion: Windows punctuation virtual keys are not layout-independent character names.

Overall direction: retain the shared controls, portal change detection, and resting-coordinate snapping. Complete the Windows key translation at the backend boundary rather than treating every printable key like a letter.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the update and relevant callers/dependencies, including egui 0.36, global-hotkey 0.9.0, and Microsoft's German layout tables. I did not run quest context, tests, or platform interaction checks. The head's GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.

[P2] Translate Windows punctuation through the active keyboard layout

The logical-letter fix does not hold for Windows OEM punctuation keys. On the German layout, capture Shift+7: egui reports key = Slash, physical_key = Num7, so this branch now saves Shift+Slash. code then yields Code::Slash, which global-hotkey 0.9.0 maps to VK_OEM_2. But Microsoft's German layout puts / on Shift+VK_7 and # on VK_OEM_2. Registration succeeds for Shift+# instead, so the captured chord no longer fires (the previous physical Num7 mapping worked for this case). Could the Windows path resolve the captured key through the active layout's scan-code/virtual-key mapping, with a German Shift+7 regression, rather than assuming each supported symbol names its US OEM virtual key?

Agreed, and the same gap reached past Windows: any key whose position decided the binding was registered by its US name. Fixed by resolving every binding through the active layout at the backend boundary.

  • A binding now keeps both the key as the layout names it (shown in the panel and asked of the Wayland portal) and where it sits (egui's physical_key). Two bindings are the same key when position and modifiers match.
  • Windows: the position's PC scancode goes through MapVirtualKeyExW(…, MAPVK_VSC_TO_VK_EX, GetKeyboardLayout(0)), and the resulting virtual key maps back to the Code that global-hotkey 0.9.0 registers as that virtual key. German Shift+7 now registers Shift+VK_7, and the # key registers VK_OEM_2 (Code::Slash). Regression test: hotkeys::layout::tests::windows_registers_what_the_layout_puts_there, using the scancode-to-VK entries from kbdgr.h (0x08 stays VK_7, 0x2B is OEM_2, 0x15/0x2C swap Z/Y, 0x27 is OEM_3).
  • X11 had the same bug for keys egui can't name. On German, ö fell back to physical Semicolon, and global-hotkey grabbed the key that types ; (Shift+comma). Now the position's keycode (scancode + 8) is read from the server's keyboard mapping. Its keysyms, at any level, become the Code whose global-hotkey keysym resolves back to that same keycode, so AZERTY's &/1 key grabs 1 on that key. A key with no such keysym, such as ö, is refused in the panel instead of grabbing a different key. Test: x11_grabs_what_the_layout_puts_there.
  • macOS already registered by position (kVK codes) and is unchanged.

layout.rs was compiled with clippy (warnings denied) for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu from a scratch crate. Neither was run on a real Windows or X11 desktop.

The previous Windows German Shift+7 finding is fixed: the captured position now resolves to VK_7 through the active layout. One separate P2 is attached: egui's physical key representation merges keypad digits with the number row, so keypad bindings still register a different key.

Overall direction: keep layout resolution at the backend boundary, but preserve native keypad identity through capture and registration.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the update and relevant callers, egui 0.36, and global-hotkey 0.9.0. I did not run quest context, tests, or desktop interaction checks. This head's GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.

[P2] Preserve keypad identity before deriving a scan code

Binding.position is an egui Key, not an unambiguous physical position: egui-winit 0.36 maps both KeyCode::Digit1 and KeyCode::Numpad1 to Key::Num1. On Windows with NumLock on, binding keypad 1 therefore reaches this arm, resolves scan code 0x02 to VK_1, and registers the top-row 1 instead of VK_NUMPAD1. The selected keypad key never fires the action, while an unrelated number-row key is swallowed and fires it. X11 has the same loss before the keymap lookup. Preserve the native key code/location through capture (or explicitly reject unsupported keypad capture before it is collapsed), and cover keypad 1 versus top-row 1 in a capture-to-registration regression.

Agreed. Fixed in 6330bd941, part of head 02e0ecc, by refusing keypad keys. egui gives the app no way to tell them apart: egui-winit 0.36.2 drops KeyEvent::location and folds Numpad0-9, NumpadEnter, NumpadDivide, NumpadSubtract, and NumpadAdd into their main keyboard keys. That fold hit macOS too (Key::Num1 registered kVK_ANSI_1), not just Windows and X11.

  • The window now runs eframe's handler on our own winit event loop (eframe::create_native), behind a thin ApplicationHandler that notes each keypad key before egui hears it (hotkeys::Keypad).
  • raw_input_hook clears physical_key on that frame's events for those keys, so they have no position. Capture can't bind them, and the focused-only fallback can't match a top-row binding against them.
  • The panel no longer waits silently on a key with no position. It refuses it next to the action ("1 cannot be bound: the studio cannot tell where it sits") and keeps waiting for another key. The README says keypad keys are refused.
  • Regression test: hotkeys::keypad::tests::keypad_keys_are_not_bound_as_their_twins. Keypad 1 with NumLock on (egui Num1, physical Num1) captures nothing, and the next frame's top-row 1 binds at Num1.

eframe only logs an error that stops its loop when it isn't the one running it, so the run now fails when the loop ends without the window being asked to close.

Binding keypad keys properly means carrying winit's KeyCode through Binding and registering global-hotkey's Numpad* codes on each backend. It's suggested as a follow-up in the PR body.

egui-winit 0.36 folds Numpad1 into Key::Num1 (and the keypad's Enter,
divide, and subtract into their main keyboard keys), so binding keypad 1
registered the top-row 1. The window's event loop now runs eframe's
handler and notes keypad keys before egui hears them, and each frame
drops those keys' positions, so the Hotkeys panel refuses them, saying
so, and the focused fallback never matches them.

The keypad finding from 5e2c99a is addressed: keypad presses are identified before egui collapses their identity, refused visibly during capture, and excluded from focused shortcut matching. The top-row key remains bindable. No new actionable findings in this update.

Overall direction: the documented keypad refusal is a sound bounded fix; keep the existing layout-aware registration for supported keys.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the event-loop wrapper, input hook, capture handling, regression test, and relevant eframe/egui 0.36.2 integration. I did not run quest context, tests, or desktop interaction checks. This head's GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.

Cut and Transition fire through Controls, which now takes them through
State's fallible cut and transition from the scene source change. The
keypad quest drops its link to the hotkeys quest this PR finishes.

- A clip's "saving" message is written before its save starts, so the
  save's result always replaces it.
- A hotkey sends its key, and the firing thread reads what it is bound to
under the state lock the window moves keys through renames under. A key
cleared since does nothing, and a scene renamed since is previewed by its
new name, following renames the window has yet to take.
- A scene's portal shortcut is kept under an id named for its key, so a
  rename keeps the desktop's assignment.
- On X11, a key whose grab global-hotkey can no longer find after a layout
change stays held, and the panel says to restart, instead of being
  forgotten while still grabbed.
- A locked resize snaps only where no edge moves out of reach, preferring
the snap that moves the item least.
- Clearing the action the Hotkeys panel waits on stops the wait.

Cancel key capture when the panel is hidden or the window loses focus.

If the user leaves without pressing a key, hotkeys remain suspended. A later key press in Studio can silently bind to the waiting action.

Clear self.binding and resume hotkeys when the panel is hidden or the window loses focus.

- The Hotkeys panel's wait for a key ends when the window loses focus or
the panel is not shown, so the hotkeys are not held off while the
  operator plays.
- A clip saved by a hotkey shows how its save went in the status bar too,
written after the "saving" message, since the Replay panel may be hidden.
- On X11, keys stuck after a layout change are reported once for the
panel, so the warning stays when every binding is cleared.

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding in its review, cancelling key capture when the panel is hidden or the window loses focus: agreed, and fixed in 4a24431. Left waiting, it held every hotkey off, which matters most exactly when the operator has gone to a game. take_binding now ends the wait, and takes the hotkeys up again, when the window isn't focused (egui's InputState::focused) or the Hotkeys panel wasn't drawn the frame before. The README says leaving the window or the panel cancels.

Reviewed commit: 4a24431

Reviewed the updates since 2fc7be1. The X11 restart warning now survives clearing all bindings, and hotkey clip-save completion reaches the status bar. One P2 is attached: the new capture cancellation depends on a UI callback that eframe skips while the window is minimized or occluded.

Overall direction: keep the shared dispatch, bounded snapping, and independent X11 warning; handle capture cancellation outside the visible UI path so hotkeys resume when the operator leaves for a game.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review, including relevant eframe/egui 0.36.2 and global-hotkey 0.9.0 code. I did not run quest context, tests, or desktop interaction checks. This head's GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.

[P2] Cancel capture even when the window stops drawing

take_binding is called only from Studio::ui, so this check does not run if the operator starts Bind and then minimizes Studio or switches to a full-screen app before another visible UI pass. The pinned eframe 0.36.2 explicitly skips App::ui for minimized/occluded viewports, running only App::logic; Window implements no logic handler and its raw-input hook only filters keypad events. All hotkeys can therefore stay suspended throughout the game, and returning with focus restored can leave the old capture pending. Cancel on focus loss in the raw-input/native-event path or a forwarded logic callback that also runs while hidden, rather than relying on the next painted frame.

Agreed, and fixed in 74215c4. The check for leaving the window moved from ui to App::logic, which eframe calls before every ui and also while the window is hidden. It reads the viewport info, which stays current while hidden: the wait ends once the window is unfocused, minimized, or occluded. Window forwards logic to the studio (rs/moq-studio/src/main.rs). Leaving the Hotkeys panel for another one is still caught in take_binding, since that only happens in a drawn frame.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

…hidden

eframe skips `App::ui` while the window is minimized or occluded, so a
capture left for a game was only ended on the next drawn frame, holding
every hotkey off meanwhile. The check for leaving the window moves to
`App::logic`, which runs while hidden, reading the viewport's focus,
minimized, and occluded state.

Reviewed commit: 74215c4

Follow-up to 4a24431. The capture-cancellation finding is addressed: Window forwards App::logic to Studio, which cancels a pending binding and resumes hotkeys when the viewport loses focus, is minimized, or is occluded. In eframe/egui 0.36.2, the hidden-window logic path refreshes viewport information before calling this handler. Panel-switch cancellation remains in the visible UI path. No new actionable findings in this update.

Overall direction: using the existing lifecycle callback fixes the source of the suspension problem without adding another event handler or polling mechanism. Keep this approach.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the incremental change, surrounding capture/suspension code, and the relevant eframe/egui 0.36.2 implementation. I did not run quest context, tests, or desktop interaction checks. This head's GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.
