feat(scene): remove a source's background with a person segmentation model - #63
Sources needed ML video effects, starting with background removal (a person cut out of a camera). The quest left the runtime (ort, tract, or burn) and the model to be picked by measuring each candidate's per-frame cost at 1080p30.
Approach
Setting:[video.<source>] background = "remove" (moq_scene::Background), a per-source setting beside crop and filters. It applies before the source's crop and filters, wherever the source is drawn, and a mask filter reading that source sees the cut-out. Allowed on camera, display, window, image, media, broadcast, browser, and replay sources. Refused on a clone (it shows its source's picture), a color, or an overlay. Cloning a source copies its crop and filters but keeps the background, since the clone already shows the cut-out.
Model: MediaPipe selfie segmentation, landscape variant (256x144, Apache-2.0), the onnx-community ONNX conversion, unmodified and embedded (451 KiB; provenance and hash in rs/moq-scene/src/model/README.md).
Runtime: tract 0.23.10 on the CPU (numbers below).
Pipeline (rs/moq-scene/src/matte.rs): the compositor copies each new picture into a held texture, shrinks it on the GPU to 256x144, and reads that back (147 KB). A thread per matted source runs the model. On a later render, the compositor uploads the matte (37 KB) and draws held * matte into the layer's picture. Each picture is drawn with its own matte a frame or more late, never with an older one; pictures that arrive while the model works are skipped for the newest. Nothing shows until the first cut-out, so a toggle never flashes the background. A failure, such as the model failing to load, stays on the source until the background is kept or the source is edited, and Compositor::error reports it without overwriting or clearing a picture's own error. A clear from the source (a media play or stop, a replay's start, end, cut-off, or gap, a closed page) drops the cut-out in hand and the held picture, even when the next picture overtakes the clear in the source's one-picture mailbox or fails to draw. The mailbox (source::Slot) now carries that cleared flag with the picture.
Studio: the Filters panel has a Background: Remove checkbox for a source that allows it.
Dev builds:tract-core, tract-data, and tract-linalg are optimized in dev builds, as sonora already is. Unoptimized inference is 103 ms per picture and would cut out about 8 pictures a second.
Runtime measurements
Apple M4 (Metal), 1080p RGBA input at 30 fps, 300 frames after 30 of warm-up. Host load was 6 to 13 on 10 cores from other builds, so each range spans two interleaved rounds. "Per frame" includes the shared GPU shrink and readback, which takes about 1.0 ms wall and 0.2 to 0.4 ms CPU.
Runtime
Per frame, p50
CPU per frame
Notes
tract 0.23.10 (CPU)
3.9 to 7.3 ms
3.4 to 6.0 ms
Pure Rust, stable, one core
ort 2.0.0-rc.15, CPU EP
4.1 to 4.6 ms
3.6 to 3.9 ms
Release candidate only; downloads ONNX Runtime binaries at build time
ort 2.0.0-rc.15, CoreML EP
4.7 to 9.9 ms
4.0 to 8.1 ms
Slower than its own CPU EP on a model this small
burn 0.22.1, wgpu on the studio's device
4.3 to 4.6 ms
6.5 to 7.1 ms
Fails on the studio's default device (its kernels need SHADER_INT64, which WebGPU lacks); kernel dispatch costs more CPU than CPU inference
Every candidate fits the 33 ms frame budget with room to spare. tract is within about 1.5x of ort's CPU EP, ships nothing native, and builds wherever the studio does. Running on the studio's own wgpu device (burn) did not save CPU, and it would force SHADER_INT64 on the shared device. The readback the quest worried about is the 256x144 model input, not the 1080p frame.
Measured in the studio's own code (Matte on a 1080p texture, Apple M4, optimized):
Render thread: 0.28 ms to start a picture and 0.27 ms to finish it.
Matte thread: 5.8 ms inference (p95 7.8). Start to matte ready is 8.1 ms (p95 10.0).
GPU copies per matted picture: one full-size copy (held), one full-size cut pass (about 1 ms with the poll round trip), one 256x144 shrink, a 147 KB readback, and a 37 KB upload.
Encoder load: none added. The program and source tracks encode as before.
Impact
Scene file: [video.<source>] background = "remove" (absent means keep). Older builds refuse a file that sets it.
Filters panel: a Background: Remove checkbox on a source.
A source with its background removed shows each picture a frame or more later than before.
Its own track (isolated recording, replay) keeps the background, since H.264 carries no transparency. A replay source can remove it again. Documented in README.
Public API (moq-scene): new Background, Video::background, Source::removes_background, Error::Matte. Not breaking for code that builds Video with ..Default::default(). The few literals in tree were updated. No wire change.
Dependencies: tract-onnx (default features off), 33 new crates in Cargo.lock.
Choices made without asking
Track keeps the background. The quest's Goal says every viewer sees the cut-out from the source's own track. Encoders here carry no alpha, and since 2026-11-04 viewers get the program, not source tracks, so the program already shows the cut-out. The remaining case, a source published independently, is recorded in quest/m2/publish-independently.md (it needs moq-video to encode alpha, or the option refused for such a source).
One model, stretched. Every picture is stretched to 256x144. A 4:3 picture masks cleanly. A 9:16 portrait still masks usably, with small holes around a held object.
CPU over the GPU runtime, per the measurements above.
Synchronous matte over the latest one: one frame of video delay instead of a cut-out edge lagging behind motion.
Test fixture:rs/moq-scene/src/test_data/person.jpg (9.5 KB) is Ilan Ramon's public-domain NASA portrait, cropped and shrunk.
Alternatives
ort: the fastest CPU EP, but it is a release candidate and needs a downloaded native library.
burn on the shared wgpu device: needs SHADER_INT64 and costs more CPU.
Running the model in the source's driver on a CPU-downloaded frame: Surface::resize cannot reach Linux external Vulkan surfaces, while the compositor sees every source as a wgpu texture.
Cutting out with the latest available matte (no delay): edges lag the person.
Follow-ups
None beyond the publish-independently note above.
Validation
quest gate just ci on head be4fdcc: passed (lint, 245 tests).
GPU tests gated behind --run-ignored (compositor::tests::*, including the new removes_the_background and a_clear_drops_the_cut_out_in_hand): all 37 passed on Metal (Apple M4) on be4fdcc. The Linux software-Vulkan run (just render-sw) did not run on this Mac.
New CPU tests in CI: matte::tests::finds_the_person, matte::tests::finds_nobody_in_a_wall, collection::tests::removes_a_background_only_from_a_picture_of_its_own, source::tests::a_clear_outlives_the_picture_after_it, ui::tests::clones_a_source_with_its_background_removed.
Review
Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort. The latest round, session 01a1b181-21a8-7351-8c33-d27f5ad00586 round 1, reviewed head be4fdcc937464de6dd58ae577c3e2ed7b842f262 against origin/main (efd5ca3) and reported no findings.
be4fdcc merges main after moq-dev/studio#62 (overlay assets). The merge needed hand resolution that changed the diff against main: this PR moved the compositor's picture handling into Compositor::take, and #62 changed Picture::Overlay to carry the checked overlay::Content, so take's overlay arm now opens content instead of the source's html, and the overlay test in source.rs matches Picture::Overlay(_). Cargo.lock is main's plus this PR's tract crates, at the same versions. That is why this head got a fresh review rather than the merge exemption.
Round 1, head 7f9ac86: [P2] a media or replay clear was matted as another picture, so a cut-out from the previous play could show after it. Fixed in aa22944.
Round 2, head aa22944: [P2] the next play's first picture can overtake the clear in the one-picture mailbox. Fixed in fd5fe47 (the mailbox carries a cleared flag).
Round 3, head fd5fe47: no findings.
Round 4, head 71a6669: no findings. This round covered the fixes for the online review on fd5fe47:
[P2] maintainer review, clone of a source with Background: Remove fails validation: fixed (clone_of in ui.rs resets the copied background to Keep, keeping crop and filters; the validation stays). Regression test ui::tests::clones_a_source_with_its_background_removed.
CodeRabbit, same clone finding: fixed by the same change.
CodeRabbit, the README says "a frame late" though a slow model shows pictures later and skips some: fixed in README, Background::Remove, the Filters tooltip, and the matte module docs.
CodeRabbit, switching back to Keep cleared a picture's own conversion error: fixed. The matte failure is no longer copied into the layer's error; Compositor::error reports it first.
CodeRabbit, a picture that overtakes a clear and fails to draw left the previous play's picture held: fixed. A clear drops the held picture and marks the layer fresh, so Keep shows nothing and Remove starts nothing until a picture draws.
CodeRabbit, a race in a_clear_drops_the_cut_out_in_hand when the old inference finished before the clear: fixed. The test waits for the old inference before clearing.
CodeRabbit nitpick, assert the replacement picture in a_clear_outlives_the_picture_after_it: applied.
CodeRabbit nitpick, assert every eligible source kind: declined. It would restate Source::removes_background's matches! list (rs/moq-scene/src/collection.rs:1550); the test covers the edge, a clone and a color refused.
…model
A source's `[video.<source>]` entry takes `background = "remove"`, which cuts
the person out of each picture before its crop and filters. MediaPipe's
selfie segmentation (landscape, Apache-2.0) runs on the CPU through tract on a
thread per source; the compositor shrinks each picture on the GPU, reads it
back, and cuts the held picture out with its own matte a frame later.

A matte error was cleared by each new picture and retried, so the source's
error flickered and a model that cannot load ran again on every picture.

feat(scene): remove a source's background with a person segmentation model
Nov 6, 2026
A media source stopped or played again, and a replay starting, ending, or
crossing a gap, clears its picture. With the background removed, the clear
waited behind the cut-out in hand, which then showed the previous play. A
wholly transparent picture has nobody to cut out: it draws at once and
throws that cut-out away.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The mailbox held only the newest picture, so a media source's next play could
replace its clear before the compositor took it, and the cut-out of the old
play still showed. The mailbox now keeps whether the source cleared since the
last take, and the compositor drops the cut-out in hand on it. This replaces
spotting a clear by its transparency.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
One P2 finding: enabling background removal makes the Sources panel's Clone action fail, because it copies the source-only setting into the new clone.
Overall direction: The measured runtime choice and one-in-flight held-picture/matte pipeline are reasonable. The mailbox's persistent clear boundary addresses the earlier stale-cut-out issue; complete the clone integration without weakening the clone validation.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the changes and relevant callers/dependencies. I did not run quest context, quest check, tests, or GPU/platform checks, or independently reproduce the model-quality and performance measurements.

[P2] Clear the source-only background setting when creating a clone
Enable Background: Remove on a camera/image, then click Clone in Sources. ui.rs:1646 copies the entire Video into the new Source::Clone; add passes it to Draft::set_video, and Draft::finish reaches this new validation with background == Remove. The action fails instead of creating the clone. Keep this validation, but reset the copied background field to Keep in the clone-creation path while preserving crop/filters: the clone already reads the original source's cut-out. Add a regression covering cloning a source with removal enabled.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 71a6669. The clone path now goes through clone_of in rs/moq-studio/src/ui.rs, which copies the crop and filters but resets background to Keep. The validation stays. Regression test: ui::tests::clones_a_source_with_its_background_removed adds the clone through a Draft and finishes it.
The change adds a background setting for supported video sources and a Filters panel control for that setting. The scene crate runs CPU segmentation on prepared pictures and uses the resulting matte to create cut-outs. Picture mailboxes now preserve clear state for the compositor, which discards pending cut-outs after a source clear. Documentation describes source support, processing delay, and how background removal relates to captured tracks and replay.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review fd5fe
Background removal has bounded issues: cloning an affected source fails, recovery after conversion errors can restore stale content or hide failures, and processing latency is understated. A GPU test also needs deterministic synchronization. These issues warrant fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The model input uses premultiplied RGB without undoing premultiplication. The supplied compositor::take explicitly premultiplies image pixels and accepts premultiplied browser pictures, whereas the model is documented as consuming RGB.
The model sees an artificially darkened person and may remove portions that should remain visible at their original opacity.
This can occur when: Remove the background from a PNG or browser picture containing a partially transparent person.

A clone copies its source's crop and filters but not a removed background,
which validation refuses on a clone. Also from review: a matte failure
reports over Compositor::error without overwriting or clearing a picture's
own error, a clear drops the held picture so nothing from before it shows
when the next one fails to draw, the clear test waits for the old cut-out
before clearing, and the docs say a slow model skips pictures.

a_clear_outlives_the_picture_after_it asserting the replacement picture: applied in 71a6669. It shows a distinct 2x1 picture after the clear and checks that take() returns it with cleared set.
Asserting every eligible source kind in removes_a_background_only_from_a_picture_of_its_own: declined. It would restate the matches! list in Source::removes_background (rs/moq-scene/src/collection.rs:1548). The test already covers the edge cases: a clone and a color are refused.
Follow-up to fd5fe47: the Clone P2 is fixed. clone_of resets background to Keep while preserving crop/filters, and the regression test completes the validating edit. No new actionable findings in this update.
Overall direction: the clone integration now respects the source-only setting without weakening validation. Separating matte and conversion errors and clearing retained pixels before replacement conversion address the underlying state issues cleanly.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the update, complete changed files, relevant callers/callees, and tests. I did not run quest context, tests, GPU/platform checks, or reproduce performance/model-quality measurements. The exact-head GitHub Check run was still in progress when inspected.
