fix(scene): a browser helper exits with the studio, even while CEF starts - #80
quest/m0/browser-helper-exit.md: when the studio died (crash, kill, timed-out test), its CEF browser helper could keep running with its subprocesses. The helper leads its own process group, so a test runner's group kill never reaches it, and the studio kills that group only when it stops in an orderly way.
Reproduced on nixos (RTX 3070 Ti) before the fix:
Healthy helper, page painting, studio SIGKILLed: the helper and its group exit within 1 s. The socket's end already reached the helper's command thread, which closed the pages.
Helper stuck in CEF initialize, studio SIGKILLed: the helper was reparented to init and kept running with its zygotes until killed by hand (still there 82 s later). It was stuck on a Wayland server that accepts the helper's connection and never answers, the same hang as in moq-dev/studio#73. The same happens with a FIFO named Local State in the profile, which initialize reads, on the CPU path with no GPU or display.
The cause: the helper started reading the studio's socket only once initialize had returned, so while initialize blocked, nothing heard the socket end. Its exit also depended on CEF's UI thread closing pages. A related hang: Helper::stop on a stuck helper waited forever, so quitting the studio would hang.
Approach
The helper reads the socket from before CEF starts. Commands that arrive while CEF starts wait in the same coalescing queue (Inbox) and are posted to the UI thread once initialize returns.
An explicit Command::Stop replaces the socket shutdown as the orderly stop. The studio sends it last and keeps its end of the socket open until the helper has exited. So the socket ends early only when the studio is gone.
When the socket ends without a Stop, or ends after one, the helper kills the process group it leads, CEF's processes included, right away, wherever CEF is. A Stop that arrives before CEF is up does the same, since no page has opened and nothing needs saving. This also fixes Helper::stop on a stuck helper.
A command the studio cannot send, such as one over the message limit, still shuts down the socket, so a helper the studio can no longer reach exits instead of waiting. Only a Stop leaves the socket open.
No page opens once the studio has asked the helper to stop. A page that opens after that, through an instance it still holds, ends when the helper exits, rather than being loaded only to close again.
The kill targets the group whose id is the helper's own pid. That group exists only while the helper leads it, so the helper can never signal the studio's group.
How it carries over to macOS and Windows (browser sources there are not built yet, quest/m0/browser-source.md). The protocol rule is portable: Stop for orderly, the channel's end as death, read from before CEF starts. On macOS the Unix socket and process groups work as they do here. Windows has no process groups, so the plan's new bullet says to start the helper in a job object with JOB_OBJECT_LIMIT_KILL_ON_JOB_CLOSE, which ends the helper and CEF's processes once the studio's handle closes. PR_SET_PDEATHSIG was not used because it is Linux-only and covers only the helper, not its subprocesses.
Impact
A crashed or killed studio, or a timed-out test, no longer leaves a browser helper running, even one stuck starting CEF.
Quitting the studio while its helper is stuck starting no longer hangs.
A studio crash now kills the helper at once instead of letting it close its pages, so cookies CEF has not yet flushed (it commits about every 30 s) are lost, as in a browser crash. An orderly quit still saves them.
Public API: none. Wire: the studio-to-helper protocol gains Command::Stop. Both ends are the same binary, so no compatibility concern.
Alternatives
Exit only on an end that arrives before CEF is up, and keep the orderly close after: this keeps cookies on a studio crash, but a helper whose UI thread or shutdown() hangs later would still be orphaned. Rejected for the exhaustive fix.
PR_SET_PDEATHSIG: Linux-only, and it fires on the death of the spawning thread, not the process.
Telling a half-closed socket from a closed one (POLLRDHUP vs POLLHUP): subtle and platform-specific. An explicit Stop is clearer.
A second lifeline pipe: more plumbing than one message on the existing socket.
Choices made without asking
A studio crash no longer lets the helper close its pages and save, as described under Impact.
Malformed input from the studio, or a second Start, makes the helper print why and exit at once, instead of starting an orderly close.
The regression test starts its studio by re-running the test binary on a companion #[ignore] test (a_studio_that_dies), which returns at once unless the parent sets its environment variable. The studio binary is a GUI app and cannot be killed headless the same way.
Validation
All on nixos over ssh (Linux, RTX 3070 Ti).
Before the fix, with only the new tests applied: a_helper_exits_with_its_studio failed ("the helper outlived its studio"), and a_helper_stops_while_starting hung until nextest killed it at 60 s. The other 10 browser tests passed.
After the fix, the browser suite on Mesa's software Vulkan (just render-sw's browser line): 12/12 pass, including cookies_survive_a_restart and both new tests.
The original scenario after the fix: the helper stuck on the silent Wayland server, with the GPU path on NVIDIA. Its whole group was gone within 1 s of the studio's SIGKILL, while the server still held the connection.
At e5879b4 (with origin/main at 167cdca merged in): nix develop --command quest gate just ci passes (279 tests).
The browser suite at e5879b4: one run under load average 30 failed a_dropdown_draws_and_takes_clicks (the center stayed red past the 20 s deadline). This PR does not touch that path, and the next three runs passed 13/13. It looks like a load flake and was not checked against main.
The writer's new unit test a_command_too_long_to_send_ends_the_socket timed out at 60 s without its fix and passes with it.
At 18b9d53 (with origin/main at 107f736 merged in, including moq-dev/studio#78), on nixos: the browser suite passes 13/13 on Mesa's software Vulkan, and nix develop --command quest gate just ci passes (280 tests). The fixes for CodeRabbit's findings in 5250123 also passed 13/13 before the merge. quest check passes after resolving the quest/m0/README.md link-list conflict.
quest check passes on macOS.
Nothing ran on macOS (low disk space) or Windows (no browser sources there yet).
Overlap
moq-dev/studio#76 merged first and is merged in. It touches the same files but not the helper's lifetime.
Round 1 (at e3c3608) found one: run.rs writer, a failed send (such as an oversized command) stopped the writer but left the socket open, so the helper never exited and Helper::stop hung. Fixed in e5879b4: a failed send shuts down the socket's write side, with a unit test.
outbox.rs open after quit: fixed in 5250123. Commands::open drops an open once quit is set, tested by a_page_opened_after_quit_never_opens.
run.rs bound the stop with a deadline: refuted. The helper's command thread never blocks (host.rscommands()), so the writer cannot stall before Stop. The remaining wait is CEF's own close and save, the same as before this PR, and REVIEW.md excludes a timeout as the fix for a hang.
…arts
The helper read the studio's socket only once CEF's initialize returned, so
a helper stuck there (a Wayland display that never answers) never heard the
studio die and kept running with its zygotes. The helper now reads from
before CEF starts, the studio stops it with an explicit Stop and holds the
socket open until it exits, and the socket's end without one makes the
helper kill the process group it leads, CEF's processes included.

A browser helper exits with the studio
fix(scene): a browser helper exits with the studio, even while CEF starts
Nov 7, 2026
Pick (/quest-complete, maintainer away under /afk, recommended option): ✅ /quest-merge on head e5879b4. Codex's last round found nothing, and the PR leaves no decisions open.
No actionable correctness findings in this static review. I traced the early command-reader startup, the Inbox initialization/notification ordering, Stop as the final outbound command, the retained event socket during orderly shutdown, and the failed-send shutdown path. The helper's fatal exit targets its own PID-named process group, consistent with process_group(0) at spawn. Dropping the painted sender on Stop also releases a paint awaiting acknowledgement before UI-thread shutdown.
The added FIFO-stalled-initialize tests exercise both studio death and orderly stop while starting; the oversized-command unit test covers the previously identified writer failure. Crash-time loss of unflushed cookies is explicitly documented. Direction: retain the explicit Stop versus channel-loss distinction and the regression coverage. The Windows job-object behavior remains a porting plan, not an implementation provided by this PR.
Verification limits: GitHub-only source/diff review. I did not run builds, tests, CEF, GPU/display scenarios, or macOS/Windows checks, and have not independently reproduced the validation reported in the PR. This is not a merge approval.
The studio now queues a final Stop command when it quits. The browser helper reads commands before CEF starts, queues pending commands, and distinguishes Stop from socket termination and receive errors. Tests cover helper cleanup when the studio exits and when CEF startup is stalled. The plan documentation describes macOS channel-based cleanup and Windows job-object cleanup.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 18b9d
The change makes the browser helper exit with the studio, and the remaining concerns are narrow. One is a test that does not assert process-group cleanup. The other is a possible but argued-against hang during an orderly stop with an unresponsive helper. Both are bounded and can be handled as follow-ups.

A page opened after quit was sent ahead of Stop, so the helper loaded it
only to close it. The regression test also kills its child studio when
it fails, rather than leave it waiting forever.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No new actionable findings in the three-file follow-up since e5879b4, accounting for merged base changes.
Direction: retain the late-open rejection under the same outbox mutex as quit. It prevents a new page from being queued after shutdown is requested while preserving already queued commands and Stop as the final command. The page remains registered with the event reader so helper exit closes it. The added unit test checks the quit-before-open ordering. The child-process guard in the stalled-start test also kills and reaps the spawned studio on failure, rather than leaving it waiting forever.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison of all eight PR-owned patches and inspection of the outbox and page-registration paths. No builds, tests, CEF sessions, or process-cleanup reproductions executed. Author-reported validation was not independently reproduced. COMMENT only, not approval.
Assert that the helper exits in a_helper_stops_while_starting.
until_stalled returns the helper PID, but the test discards it. The test passes if drop(studio) returns, even when the helper or its CEF processes survive. If Studio::drop blocks on a helper that never stops, the test hangs with no timeout.
a_helper_exits_with_its_studio already polls for an empty process group. Do the same here.
🧪 Proposed fix
- until_stalled(std::process::id(), profile.path()).await;- drop(studio);+ let helper = until_stalled(std::process::id(), profile.path()).await;+ drop(studio);++ let deadline = Instant::now() + TIMEOUT;+ while processes().iter().any(|process| process.group == helper) {+ assert!(Instant::now() < deadline, "the helper outlived its studio");+ kio::clock::sleep(Duration::from_millis(30)).await;+ }
Based on learnings: process-group cleanup tests must verify descendant termination, for example by verified process-group absence. Returning from the stop call does not prove that the descendants exited.
