test(studio): the relay test waits for the resized rendition - #89
engine::tests::the_program_reaches_a_relay failed with decode: Mux(Moq(Stream(NotFound))) in the nightly's Software render job (run 42350943682, attempt 1) and once on a loaded nixos during moq-dev/studio#81.
The failing step is the resize, not the first subscribe. A resize ends the old canvas (0.avc3) and half (1.avc3) renditions, each on its own encode thread, and each drops its catalog entry as it finishes. Under load the canvas thread finishes first, so one catalog lists 1.avc3 alone. The test's wait for "the new rendition alone" accepted any single rendition that wasn't the old canvas, took 1.avc3 for the resized one, and subscribed to a track the studio had already closed. The studio answered the relay not found:
WARN moq_net::lite::publisher: subscribed error broadcast=studio track=1.avc3 err=not found
WARN moq_mux::container::consumer: track failed; ending the reader track="1.avc3" error=Moq(Stream(NotFound))
panicked at rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:3383:57: decode: Mux(Moq(Stream(NotFound)))
Even had the track been found, it would have ended or shown 320x180 rather than 160x90.
Approach
The wait also skips the old half size. One condition, plus a comment saying why.
Closes the quest: deletes quest/m0/relay-test-flake.md and its link in the m0 README.
Impact
None for users. Test-only. No public API or wire change.
Validation
Reproduced on nixos: 8 copies at once, pinned to 8 cores (taskset -c 24-31), on lavapipe. Before the fix, 5 of 96 runs failed this way. Each failure logged the subscribe to 1.avc3 after the resize, and a catalog print showed that run's resize wait reading all=["1.avc3"].
After the fix, the same setup passed 120 of 120 runs. 5 of those runs saw the ["1.avc3"] catalog and skipped it.
nix develop --command quest gate just ci on nixos: passes (279 tests).
The nightly engine set (just render-sw's second command), 3 rounds: 6 of 6 each round.
Not run: macOS. The test is Linux lavapipe only.
Alternatives
Make the resize remove both old renditions from the catalog in one update. Each encode thread drops its own entry when it finishes (moq_video::encode::Producer's import), so doing that needs a moq-mux/moq-video API upstream. Viewers would gain little: any viewer that subscribes from a catalog read just before an update hits the same NotFound, so players have to handle a stale catalog anyway. I did not pursue it.
moq-net and the relay are behaving correctly. Answering NotFound for a track that is gone is right. This is a different cause from quest/m0/unpublish-clean.md, where the broadcast closes before the relay has the track's end and viewers see Unroutable.
Follow-ups
None.
Review
Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort), round 1 on head bcbe4d6919835c08f9ef5732a0e4ae444b6da72a against origin/main at f760ee7: no findings.
A resize ends the old canvas and half sizes on their own encode threads, so
a catalog between them can list the half size alone. The test took that as
the resized rendition and subscribed to a track already gone, failing with
Stream(NotFound). It now skips both old sizes.
Finishes quest/m0/relay-test-flake.md.

No actionable findings. In rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:4175–4193, excluding both original rendition names prevents the resize wait from accepting the retiring half-size track. Replacement tracks receive unique names, and the test still checks the decoded 160×90 picture, session count, timeline continuity and frame rate.
Direction: keep this focused test fix. It corrects the catalog-selection predicate without adding a sleep, retry or longer timeout.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the diff, full relay test and relevant rendition lifecycle code. I read the pinned quest context as source but did not execute quest context, tests or CI; the reported stress-run results were not independently reproduced. COMMENT only, not approval.

Walkthrough
The Required list no longer includes the relay-test investigation quest, and its investigation note was deleted. The resize test now requires exactly one enabled rendition whose name differs from both prior rendition names. A comment notes that the prior tracks can end separately, leaving the half-size rendition in the catalog temporarily.
Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review bcbe4
The change addresses the intermediate-catalog race without changing production behavior. Deterministic coverage would strengthen protection against recurrence, but no merge-blocking defect is established.

Add deterministic coverage for the rendition selection.
Extract the selection logic and test it with a half-size-only catalog followed by the resized rendition. The integration test can pass without seeing the intermediate catalog, so removing the exclusion may go undetected until the intermittent failure returns.

containing only the half-size rendition and then adds the resized rendition,
verifying the half-size rendition is not selected and the resized rendition is

Pick (/quest-complete, maintainer away under /afk, recommended option): ✅ Merge. Skipped CodeRabbit's nitpick about extracting the rendition choice into a unit-tested helper: it's a one-condition test helper, and the PR's 120-run reproduction already covers it. Merged main (#87), with no conflicts.
