Summary

  • Update one bot preview status comment after every automatic build, including pushes to an open PR. A successful deploy replaces an earlier failure status.
  • Reuse legacy preview comments, remove duplicate bot statuses, and update the same comment after manual deploy or teardown.
  • Validate build artifact metadata and PR identity before using its PR number in the privileged workflow. Pass validated PR numbers through environment variables to Surge commands.
  • Serialize automatic runs from the same PR source branch, serialize manual runs by PR number, and recheck the PR head before changing its status comment.

Context

The failure comment on #398 remained after the next preview deployed because the success comment step skipped synchronize events and only created new comments. This change updates the existing comment on the next successful preview.

Validation

  • node --test .github/scripts/preview-status.test.cjs — 4 tests passed.
  • go run github.com/rhysd/actionlint/cmd/actionlint@v1.7.7 .github/workflows/surge-preview-deploy.yaml .github/workflows/test-deploy.yaml — passed.
  • git diff --check — passed.

Walkthrough

The change adds a helper to update preview status comments and integrates it with automatic and manual Surge deployment workflows. The automatic workflow validates artifact metadata and PR identity before deploying or tearing down. Tests cover comment updates, duplicate removal, and reviewer comment preservation.

Changes: Surge preview deployment status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preview status comment updates
.github/scripts/preview-status.cjs, .github/scripts/preview-status.test.cjs, .github/workflows/test-deploy.yaml
The helper validates PR numbers and statuses, updates or creates a matching bot comment, and deletes duplicate matches. Tests cover legacy comments, duplicate removal, repeated updates, and reviewer comment preservation. The test workflow runs these tests with Node’s test runner.
Automatic deployment validation and status
.github/workflows/surge-preview-deploy.yaml
The automatic workflow checks out the default branch, validates artifact metadata against the triggering run and PR, and passes the validated PR number to deploy or teardown commands. It reports non-closed run outcomes through the status helper.
Manual deployment and teardown validation
.github/workflows/surge-preview-deploy.yaml
The manual jobs validate PR numbers and pass them to deployment or teardown commands. Manual deployment reports its deployed status through the shared helper.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 8f071

Preview status comments can still be wrong when manual and automatic runs overlap for the same PR. A manual teardown also leaves a stale "deployed" comment. Use one PR-scoped concurrency group for all jobs before merging, and consider updating the comment after manual teardown.

Serialize manual and automatic updates for the same PR.

These manual groups cannot match the automatic group on Line 28. If a manual deploy succeeds while an automatic run for the same PR is pending, the automatic run can later replace the deployed comment with a failure status. Its PR-head check does not detect the manual deploy. Use one PR-scoped group for all three jobs so their Surge operations and status updates cannot overlap. GitHub serializes jobs only when their group keys match. (docs.github.com)
