Proposed changes

Probing a vhost on a given server, or an origin behind a CDN, needs the hostname in the Host header and SNI while the connection goes to another ip, and one host often has to be probed on several ips. httpx had no input for that: a vhost,ip line builds the url from the ip, sends no SNI and reports the ip in url and host, and -pa only probes the ips DNS returns.

A JSON input line can now pin its target to an ip, like curl --resolve, in the format nuclei target lines use since projectdiscovery/nuclei#7863, so one list feeds both:

{"target": "https://app.example.com", "ip": "192.0.2.10"}

The hostname stays in the Host header and SNI but, as with curl --resolve, is not resolved: the connection goes to the ip, and host_ip reports it. Each target and ip pair is a separate target, so the same host can be listed with several ips, and -pa goes through the same path.

fastdialer.WithResolveOverride comes from projectdiscovery/fastdialer#580, released in fastdialer v0.6.0, which dev requires since #2688, so go.mod is unchanged.

  • runner/targetline.go parses input lines that start with {. Only target and ip are accepted, so a mistyped key cannot probe the host through DNS. The ip is validated and canonicalized (::ffff:192.0.2.10 becomes 192.0.2.10; zones and unspecified addresses are rejected), and the target must have a hostname: IP, CIDR, ASN, wildcard and vhost,ip targets are rejected. A line without ip is the plain target. Pinned lines are stored in a canonical form, so equivalent lines are probed once, and -pa doesn't resolve a pinned target.
  • The request is pinned with httpx.WithPinnedIP, which applies fastdialer.WithResolveOverride to the target's hostname, instead of the fastdialer.IP context value -pa used. That value pinned every dial of the request, so with -fr a redirect to another host went to the probed ip, a proxy was dialed on the probed ip, and an IPv6 ip was passed in brackets, which fastdialer rejects with no ips provided in dialWrap. The favicon request and the ztls handshake keep the request's context, so they connect through the ip as well instead of resolving the host.
  • A proxy resolves the host itself, so the transport fails a request to the pinned host that would go through one, set with -proxy or in HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY. The check sees the URL actually requested, so -ports, the scheme fallback and NO_PROXY apply as for any request, and a redirect to another host still goes through the proxy. -pa through a proxy fails the same way.
  • The result of a pinned target doesn't resolve its host either: a, aaaa and cname come from the dialer's cache only, so a target line reports its ip and sends no DNS query for its host, while -pa, which resolved the host for its ips, keeps all of them. Before, every probe of a pinned target looked the host up.
  • The ips of a host are kept apart: -maxhr counts errors per host:port and ip, so failures on one ip don't skip the others, and -sr names a stored response by its url and ip, so with a matcher or filter the responses of one url on several ips, from target lines or -pa, no longer overwrite each other. -e cdn classifies the pinned ip instead of the first ip of the host, so an origin behind a CDN is not skipped on other ports, and a pinned ip excluded with -e is skipped.
  • An invalid line stops the run before probing starts. With -stream, which reads lines while probing, it is skipped with an error. The three input loops of streamInput share one sendLine helper.
  • -proxy, -unsafe, -pipeline, -http2, -jarm, -screenshot and -vhost-input don't connect through the ip, so a pinned line is refused with them before probing starts. The README documents the format.

Closes #2667

Proof

Run with app.test resolving to 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.2 through /etc/hosts, a server on each whose title names it and the Host header, and redir.test (127.0.0.1) redirecting to other.test (127.0.0.3); dev at 668a37c, with -title -ip:

Run dev this branch
-l with two lines pinning http://app.test:18080 to .1 and .2 no output [srv=127.0.0.1 host=app.test:18080] [127.0.0.1], [srv=127.0.0.2 host=app.test:18080] [127.0.0.2]
-pa -fr -sc on http://redir.test:18201 [302,200] [srv=127.0.0.1 host=other.test:18202] [127.0.0.1] [302,200] [srv=127.0.0.3 host=other.test:18202] [127.0.0.1]
-pa -sr -mc 200 on http://app.test:18080 one stored response, from .1 a stored response from each ip
-pa -probe -proxy http://127.0.0.1:18500 on http://app.test:18080, a proxy listening on .1 only [SUCCESS] [proxy got http://app.test:18080/] [127.0.0.1] and [FAILED] for .2: the proxy port is dialed on each ip [FAILED] for both ips
-stream with a pinned line, a malformed line and a plain url the plain url only [ERR] Skipping input: invalid target line …, the pinned line and the plain url probed
the two pinned lines with -proxy no output [FTL] … a target with an ip cannot be probed with -proxy

-pa on http://app.test:18080 gives the same output on both: fastdialer v0.6.0 keys its dial cache by the pinned ip, which fixed the wrong server described in #2667. A dial with the fastdialer.IP value [::1], as dev passes an IPv6 ip, still fails in v0.6.0 with no ips provided in dialWrap before connecting.

  • TestParseTargetLine covers valid lines, IPv6 and IPv4-mapped ips included, and each rejected form. TestRunner_normalizeInput covers deduplication of equivalent lines and the refused flags, TestRunner_targetLine_targets checks that -pa doesn't resolve a pinned target, and TestRunner_streamInput_skipsInvalidLines that -stream skips a malformed line.
  • TestTargetLinePinsTheConnection: two local servers on 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.2 with the same port; lines pinning pinned.test, which doesn't resolve, to each ip reach each server with Host: pinned.test. It is skipped where 127.0.0.2 can't be bound.
  • TestTargetLinePinsIPv6 does the same with a server on [::1] and a line pinned to ::1, and is skipped where IPv6 is not available.
  • TestTargetLineKeepsSNI: every ClientHello for a pinned https://pinned.test carries pinned.test as SNI.
  • TestTargetLineStoresTheResponseOfEachIP: with -sr and -mc 200, the stored response of each pinned ip holds its own page. TestRunner_skipCDNPort_pinned: -e cdn classifies the pinned ip. TestRefusePinned: a request to a pinned host, IDN hosts and several pinned hosts included, fails instead of going through a proxy, and a request to another host keeps the proxy; TestRunner_analyze_pinnedThroughProxy checks it through the runner. These tests fail without their fixes.
  • TestTargetLineIsNotResolved: with a local resolver answering 127.0.0.2 for pinned.test, a line pinning it to 127.0.0.1 reports 127.0.0.1 in a and sends no query; it fails without the fix. TestProbeAllIPsKeepsTheAddressesOfTheHost: with -pa, each result keeps both addresses of the host.
  • go test ./... passes except TestRunner_probeall_targets, which needs a DNS server and fails without one on dev as well. golangci-lint run ./... reports nothing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • You can now provide JSON input lines containing a hostname and an optional IP address to direct probes to specific IPs while retaining the hostname for HTTP and TLS.
    • Multiple IP addresses can be specified for one target. Results are associated with the corresponding IP.
  • Bug Fixes
    • When an automatically selected HTTP probe returns status 400, the runner now retries over HTTPS unless unsafe mode is enabled. If the retry fails, the original HTTP response is retained.
  • Documentation
    • Added usage details and limitations for hostname-and-IP input, including incompatible options and proxy behavior.

Probing a vhost on a given server, or an origin behind a CDN, needs the
hostname in the Host header and SNI while the connection goes to
another ip, and the same host may need probing on several ips. The
vhost,ip form builds the URL from the ip, so it sends no SNI and reports
the ip as the URL host, and -pa probes the ips DNS returns.

An input line can now be a JSON object with the target and the ip,
like curl --resolve:

  {"target": "https://app.example.com", "ip": "192.0.2.10"}

The target is probed with the ip as its CustomIP, and host_ip reports
it. Lines are read from -l and stdin; -u splits its value on commas, so
it cannot carry them. The ip is validated and canonicalized, and the
target must have a hostname. An invalid line stops the run, or is
skipped with a warning in stream mode. Equivalent lines are stored once,
and -pa does not resolve a pinned target. -proxy, -unsafe, -pipeline,
-http2, -jarm, -screenshot and -vhost-input do not connect through the
ip, so they are refused with pinned targets.

The ip of a pinned line, and each ip of -pa, now pins only the probed
host, with fastdialer.WithResolveOverride. The fastdialer.IP value used
before pinned every dial of the request, so a redirect to another host
followed with -fr went to the same ip. IPv6 ips were passed in
brackets, which fastdialer does not accept as an ip, so those -pa probes
failed. Favicon and ztls requests keep the ip, -maxhr counts errors per
ip, and the ip is checked against the network policy as well as the
host.

go.mod points fastdialer at a fork commit with WithResolveOverride until
a fastdialer release includes it.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2667] Requirements: a JSON input line pins a target hostname to an ip. The hostname stays in the Host header and SNI. The connection goes to the ip. Each target and ip pair is a separate target. -pa uses the same path. Redirects, IPv6, favicon, ztls, -maxhr, and -sr are covered.

Evidence at head 86c00f8. The head equals the last reviewed head, so no incremental change exists. Prior conclusions were rechecked against the whole-PR diff from merge base 668a37c:

  • runner/runner.go targets(): the isTargetLine case parses the line with parseTargetLine and returns httpx.Target{Host, CustomIP}. No DNS lookup runs. The -pa path reaches the same case.
  • runner/runner.go: the request context gets httpx.WithPinnedIP(ctx, URL.Hostname(), target.CustomIP). The fastdialer.IP context value is removed from runner.go.
  • common/httpx/pinned.go: WithPinnedIP calls fastdialer.WithResolveOverride for the hostname. It also stores a per-host context key. isPinned limits refusePinned to that host. A redirect to another host resolves normally. The raw ip is used, so IPv6 is not bracketed.
  • runner/runner.go: getDNSData(..., target.CustomIP != "") uses GetDNSDataFromCache for pinned targets, so the pinned host is not resolved. -pa uses the normal lookup.
  • HandleFaviconHash clones req.Context(), so the pin is kept. common/httpx/tls.go uses context.WithoutCancel on the request context for ztls.
  • pinnedKey adds the ip to the -maxhr hostPort key and to the response-file key. Each ip is counted and stored separately.
  • skipCDNPort(host, ip, port) classifies the pinned ip. skip() checks the pinned ip against the network policy.
  • Tests in runner/targetline_test.go and common/httpx/pinned_test.go cover parsing, IPv4 and IPv6 pinning, SNI, stored responses, CDN classification, proxy refusal, DNS non-resolution, and stream skipping.

Unresolved uncertainty: the tests were not executed in this review. The fastdialer v0.6.0 source was not inspected, so the behavior of WithResolveOverride and GetDNSDataFromCache comes from the PR text and the dependency version. The objective of #2667 is coding behavior only. The go.mod dependency change is not part of the linked coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area maps to #2667 or to the required behavior of a pinned target:

  • runner/targetline.go: parsing, validation, canonicalization, and deduplication of pinned lines.
  • runner/runner.go: input normalization at entry points, the target routing in targets(), pinned keys for -maxhr and response files, pinned ip in the request context, -e cdn and network-policy checks, cached-only DNS for pinned targets, and the favicon context clone.
  • common/httpx/pinned.go and httpx.go: WithPinnedIP and refusePinned. A proxy resolves the host itself, so a proxied request to a pinned host is refused.
  • common/httpx/tls.go: keeps the request context for the ztls pin.
  • Refusal of -proxy, -unsafe, -pipeline, -http2, -jarm, -screenshot, and -vhost-input with pinned lines. These options do not connect through the pinned ip. The README documents this restriction.
  • Tests and README: these verify or document the feature.

The AI-generated raw summary describes a status-400 HTTP-to-HTTPS retry with a restored plaintext response in runner/runner.go. The whole-PR runner/runner.go diff at head contains no such hunk. That claim is not in the reviewed changes, so it is not counted here. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

This stays a draft until httpx moves to fastdialer v0.6.0, which includes projectdiscovery/fastdialer#580. On dev that bump needs two things outside this PR:

  • a tlsx release with Support TLS 1.3 with ztls tlsx#1015: tlsx v1.4.1 and v1.4.2 don't build with the zcrypto that fastdialer v0.6.0 requires (nuclei pins tlsx at that commit);
  • an update of TestDialerALPNReachesClientHello in common/httpx, or of the ALPN setup it covers: with v0.6.0, TLS dials that are not ztls add http/1.1 to ALPN, which the test doesn't expect.

Once dev is on v0.6.0, I'll drop the replace and mark this ready.

dev requires fastdialer v0.6.0, which has WithResolveOverride and the dial cache fix, so go.mod and go.sum take dev's versions and the fastdialer replace is dropped.
The test serves on [::1] and is skipped where IPv6 is not available. The
server helper of the pinned test is shared with it.

Include the pinned IP in the stored-response filename hash.

With -sr and an active matcher or filter, pinned lines with the same URL but different IPs share one stored-response filename. The output loop writes each matched response to that filename without a collision check, so the later response overwrites the earlier one. Include target.CustomIP in the hash input so each pinned target keeps its own stored response.

With a matcher or filter, -sr writes a response after matching under a name
hashed from the method and url, so the responses of one url on several ips,
from target lines or -pa, overwrote each other. The name now includes the
pinned ip, as the -maxhr key does.

Classify the pinned IP for -exclude-cdn.

If a hostname resolves to a CDN address but its pinned IP is an origin address, skipCDNPort classifies the DNS address. On a nonstandard port, it skips the pinned origin without probing it. Pass target.CustomIP into this check when present, so the CDN restriction evaluates the destination that the request will use. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Reject environment-proxied pinned targets or bypass the proxy.

If HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY applies to the target, pinnedTargetConflicts still accepts the line because it checks only explicit proxy options. The HTTP transport then dials the proxy, not the target hostname, so WithResolveOverride does not send the request to target.CustomIP. Check the effective proxy for each pinned target, or use a transport that does not proxy pinned requests. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

-e cdn classified the first resolved ip of a host, so a target pinned to an
origin behind a CDN was skipped on ports other than 80 and 443; the pinned ip
is classified instead. A pinned line whose request goes through a proxy set
in HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY is refused like one with -proxy, as the proxy
resolves the host itself.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Skip hostname DNS lookup for pinned results.

Runner.analyze calls getDNSData after every successful request, including requests with target.CustomIP set. This violates the pinned-target contract and can delay results when the hostname has no working DNS. When DNS succeeds, A and AAAA can list addresses other than the pinned endpoint. HostIP is already set correctly from target.CustomIP.

When DNS fails, the error is ignored and the pinned IP is appended as a fallback, but the unnecessary lookup still occurs.

A proxy resolves the host itself, so a request to a pinned host through a
proxy set with -proxy or in HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY did not reach the ip.
Pinning moves to httpx.WithPinnedIP, and the transport fails such a request.
The check sees the URL actually requested, so -ports, a scheme fallback and
NO_PROXY apply as for any request, and a redirect to another host still goes
through the proxy. It replaces the check of target lines against the
environment.

WithPinnedIP keeps a context key per host, as fastdialer does for its
overrides, so the proxy is refused for every host pinned in a context, not
only the last one. The README sentence on proxies set in the environment is
simplified, and the probe tests follow the input tests.
Like curl --resolve, a pinned target is probed without resolving its host:
a, aaaa and cname come from the dialer cache only, so the pinned ip is
reported as its address, while -pa, which resolved the host for its ips,
keeps all of them. Before, every probe of a pinned target looked the host up,
which sent its name to the resolvers and reported their addresses.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Isolate pinned requests from the shared HTTP/2 pool.

With -pr http2, the primary transport enables HTTP/2. Concurrent pinned requests for the same hostname and port can then reuse the connection created for the first pinned IP. DisableKeepAlives does not prevent HTTP/2 connection reuse. The second probe can therefore receive the first IP's response, which violates per-target/IP probing.

Use a transport/client isolated by pinned IP, or disable HTTP/2 reuse for pinned requests before h.client.Do(req).

An HTTP/2 connection serves every request to its host, whatever ip it was
dialed to, so concurrent probes of one host pinned to different ips could get
each other's responses with -pr http2. A pinned line is refused with it, as
with -http2.
a and aaaa hold dns data. When the host of a pinned target is not cached,
there is none, and the pinned ip stays in host_ip instead of being reported
as a record of the host.

encoding/json leaves a string empty for null, so a line with "ip": null or
"ip": "" was taken as a line without ip and probed through DNS. The ip is
decoded raw, and a present ip goes to the ip validation, which rejects both.

A pinned host is matched as net/http dials it, so an IDN host spelled in
upper case or with an ideographic full stop keeps its pin instead of being
resolved.

A request that is not pinned records the ip it is dialed to, for its
host_ip: the dialer keeps only the last ip dialed to a host, which could be
the one a pinned target of the same host was dialed to meanwhile.

The favicon request and the ztls grab take only the pin of the probe, not
its trace, which the favicon request overwrote with -trace.

Only the host of a target line goes unresolved; -pa results resolve it as
before, as a cache miss emptied their a, aaaa and cname.

The ip of a pinned target is shown as with -pa, every target line is
checked against the conflicting options, whatever its source, and invalid
lines share one error format. The tests cover each of these and run behind
a proxy set in the environment.
A request that goes through a proxy records it, so its host_ip stays empty
instead of taking the last ip the dialer dialed to its host, which could be a
pinned target's. A failed probe of a pinned target shows its ip.

Option conflicts are named after target lines, the only inputs they apply
to, and are no longer reported as invalid lines. A skipped line is a warning
in every mode. The README describes what changes for -pa and what -tls-probe
does with a pinned host.

The tests cover a proxy set in the environment end to end, host spellings
on the request side, the scheme of a line, the ip in the output and the skip
of a failing ip. The TestMain of the package moves to main_test.go.
An invalid line is reported and skipped, as in -stream, so that one bad
line in a large list does not stop the run. A line that conflicts with
the options still stops it, as every such line would.

Names of a certificate shaped like target lines are not probed with
-tls-probe: only an input pins a target to an ip. The refusal of a proxy
for a pinned target is reported once, naming NO_PROXY, and host_ip falls
back to the dialer history for a proxied request again, as on dev.
A line given to Process is normalized as the lines of the input are, so
a line without ip is its plain target, expanded and resolved as one, and
the options a pinned line conflicts with are checked once, when a line
is read.

-pa is refused with -proxy, which resolves the host itself: it used to
dial the port of the proxy on each ip of the host. The README and the
doc comments say that a host is pinned on every port.
