Hyperlinking ChartJS Bubbles and the Class & Package Relationship columns

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Clicking a bubble with a valid HTTP or HTTPS source link opens it in a new tab. Hover cues and tooltip prompts now appear only when a valid link is available.
    • Class-relationship tables display rendered labels as HTML, including source links that open in a new tab with security protections.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Report templates now render class-relationship labels as HTML. Bubble chart source URLs control click navigation, hover cursors, and tooltip prompts.

Changes

Report Source Links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Render class-relationship links
assets/refactor-first-report.mustache, public/assets/refactor-first-report.mustache, tests/unit/renderer.test.js, tests/integration/report-view.test.jsx
Both report templates render renderedLabel without Mustache escaping. Tests check that the rendered class-relationship cell contains a GitHub source link with the expected target and rel attributes.
Handle bubble chart source links
lib/report-view.js, tests/unit/report-view.test.js
isHttpUrl accepts valid absolute HTTP(S) URLs. Bubble clicks open accepted URLs in a new tab with noopener when window.open is available. Hover cursors and tooltip prompts also depend on URL validation. Unit tests cover accepted and rejected URLs and missing event targets.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5c29d

A repository-controlled label can alter a report’s appearance and trigger requests to a limited set of allowed image hosts; report-data exfiltration is not established. This is a bounded security risk, so merging carries limited but real risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5c29d

Existing HTML/CSS exposure remains in report rendering. The inspected baseline already allowed the same report author to influence page markup, so the new class-label path does not establish a broader attack scope. Chart navigation requires HTTP(S) and isolates the opened tab. URL-sanitizer behavior and deployed browser policy remain partly unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced attack scope is browsers viewing an attacker-controlled report. Admitted styles can affect the surrounding page, not merely the relationship cell. This report-author authority already existed through raw package labels and other fields; actual report-content exfiltration or server-side privilege gain was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment retains a medium injection finding and a low sensitive-data-exposure finding at class-label rendering. The supported trace is repository report data through preparation and raw interpolation into sanitized document markup. CSS influence and permitted resource requests are supported; arbitrary-host exfiltration is not established.
  • inferred — For an attacker controlling the entire report JSON, the retained markup/CSS condition and effective document scope predate this PR. Adding the class-label path does not establish materially greater authority than the existing raw package-label path. A distinct attacker limited to class-label production was not established by the available evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Repository data cannot replace the fetched report template: the viewer explicitly selects the bundled template. Final HTML crosses the insertion boundary only after sanitization, and a one-time sanitizer hook adds noopener noreferrer to anchors targeting a new tab.
  • observed — Bubble navigation validates the selected report URL immediately before window.open and uses noopener. The gate restricts schemes, not destination hosts. This control is separate from class-link sanitization, whose exact dependency URI policy remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Chart replacement destroys the previous instance before construction and registers the replacement afterward. Explicit cleanup destroys registered charts; disconnected canvases are also pruned during redraw. The new navigation callback validates its current selected point rather than relying only on an earlier tooltip or hover decision.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — An anchor-and-text-only contract for report-supplied source labels, with trusted template styles handled separately, would narrow the existing markup/CSS boundary. This is hardening of an existing exposure, not evidence that this PR introduced broader report-author authority.

535-553: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Add a keyboard-accessible way to open the source link.

The click and hover cues work only with a mouse. The pointer cursor and the "Click to open source file" tooltip give keyboard and screen reader users no way to reach the link. Provide an equivalent, such as a link list or table that exposes the same URLs.

Based on learnings: interactive elements must not rely solely on mouse hover and must have a keyboard-accessible alternative.

Show the source prompt only for an openable URL.

If raw.url is truthy but fails isHttpUrl, the tooltip says “Click to open source file,” while the click handler does nothing. Use isHttpUrl(raw.url) here so the prompt matches the click behavior.

Update the source prompt condition in the tooltip-building flow to use
isHttpUrl(raw.url) instead of checking raw.url for truthiness, so the prompt
appears only when the URL can be opened and matches the click handler behavior.

Injection

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Moderate
CWE: CWE-74 — Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component ('Injection')

Restrict renderedLabel markup before inserting it into the report. Repository-owned report JSON controls renderedLabel, and both templates interpolate it without Mustache escaping. DOMPurify keeps <style> elements, and the page CSP permits inline styles. A crafted label can alter or hide the report and trigger image requests to img-src-allowed hosts. The CSP does not permit arbitrary external hosts, and this does not establish report-data exfiltration. Sanitize each label with an allow-list for required links and markers that excludes styles, or build its markup from structured fields.
