Never block or drop Slack messages on the Holmes slackbot check - #2210
Avi-Robusta wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
The request had no timeout and runs while holding the Slack sink's grouping lock, so a hung API call blocked all alert workers and alerts were dropped once the queue filled. - Line 828: Update the timeout exception handler in the Holmes block
construction flow so transient timeout failures are not cached for the full
configured TTL; either skip negative caching for timeouts or use a shorter
negative TTL, while leaving caching behavior for other failures unchanged.
- Line 828: Update SlackSender’s is_holmes_slackbot_connected request to enforce
a 10-second total wall-clock deadline, or move the connectivity check outside
SlackSink’s finding_group_lock so a slow-drip response cannot hold the grouping
lock beyond that limit.

get_session_token ran outside the try, so a Supabase error or timeout raised out of the Slack sender and the alert was never posted. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_013ZNDw6Lj1zMhS5s9mMHgPS
requests' timeout only bounds connect and each idle read, so a trickling response, redirects, slow DNS, several unreachable addresses or a slow Supabase session token could still hold the Slack lock far longer. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Bound the lifetime or number of status-check workers.
When a response keeps sending bytes without completing, join(timeout=10) releases the caller but leaves the daemon worker running. The Requests timeout does not limit the total response duration. After each cache expiry, another alert can start another worker. A prolonged slow response can therefore accumulate threads and connections until the runner loses capacity. Bound the underlying operation, and prevent a new check while an earlier check remains active. (requests.readthedocs.io)

This reverts commit 5e2ddf7.
The Slack sink calls
is_holmes_slackbot_connectedwhile it holds the grouping lock, before every message it sends. That check had two ways to stop Slack delivery:/api/holmes/integrations/slack/runnerhad no timeout. When the API hung (10-19 around 13:30Z, and 09-23), the lock was never released, every alert worker queued behind it, the 500-item alert queue filled and new alerts were dropped. It now has a 10srequeststimeout.get_session_token()ran outside thetry, so a Supabase error or timeout escaped from the Slack sender and the alert was never posted. It is now inside thetry, so it counts as "not connected" like any other failure, and that result is cached for the TTL.The
requeststimeout limits connecting and each idle read, not the total time a response may take. A server that keeps trickling bytes can still hold the call open; a hard wall-clock cap was tried and left out for now.Verification, using the real
SlackSinkwith summary grouping and 20 concurrentwrite_findingcalls, against local servers that accept connections and never reply:The slackbot check on its own returns in 10.0s both when the server never replies and when the connection never completes. Every other call made while the lock is held already has a timeout:
