DISCLOSURE: LLM-GENERATED TEXT
Why:
The copy/cut fixtures failed in full runs while passing filtered: the first read-back of a clipboard write races the OS write on the pinned host, so landed copies were reported as refused (#250).
What:

  • Keep TerminalClipboard.TryWrite write-plus-one-read-back; state the degraded-host race and the never-block rule.
  • Ban blocking waits in production code with lint:blocking-waits (rule 26): no sleep, spin, or blocking await under Runtime/ and Editor/.
  • Make the paste/copy EditMode fixtures read their arrange back and ignore with the reason when the host cannot hold it.
  • Carry the delivery-witness + verdict shape into the palette's three clipboard-key fixtures, armed after Open().
  • Export one real-tree artifact per suite run; the other exporter tests build a millisecond fixture package.
  • Inject clocks into the MCP test waits; split preflight's editor test lane; cache tooling~/node_modules in CI.
    How we know:
Full EditMode leg on the degraded host: every clipboard fixture green or named-skip, 0 failures; CommandPaletteTests 55/55; testhost 619/619 pins the write-verify logic.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes clipboard copy semantics and broad test/CI behavior; production impact is documented false refusals on slow clipboards rather than waits, plus new linter enforcement on Runtime/Editor threading patterns.

Overview
Addresses #250: clipboard write-then-read-back can falsely report refusal when the host lags, without adding blocking waits on Unity’s main thread.

Product & policy: TerminalClipboard.TryWrite stays synchronous; docs accept occasional false refusals on degraded hosts. Copy refusal text moves to BuiltInCommands.ClipboardRefusalMessage so tests gate on the full logged line. New lint:blocking-waits (pre-commit, CI, rule 26) bans Thread.Sleep, spin, Task.Wait/.Result, etc. under Runtime/ and Editor/, with reason-carrying allow markers; TerminalThemePersister uses one. LINQ (and the new linter) now scan interpolation holes as code so $"{task.Wait()}" cannot slip through.

Tests: EditMode/PlayMode clipboard fixtures arrange via TerminalClipboard.TryWrite, ignore when arrange/caret/clipboard cannot be held (#250), and palette clipboard keys get retry + key-routing/clipboard verdict helpers (aligned with terminal paste tests).

CI & tooling: New content-gates.yml runs markdown lint + package validate on md/meta-only changes so the heavy tooling matrix does not run unnecessarily; tooling-tests.yml drops those paths and adds tooling~/node_modules caching. Preflight splits editor-compile (dotnet lane) vs editor-run (testhost). MCP bridge/idle waits accept injectable sleep and shorter health probes in tests. Unity package export contract tests use a fixture package so the real tree exports once per suite.

Do we really want to busy wait this long? It's the sum total of the entire window. Is there a better, more reliable mechanism? I don't want to spin-wait, ever.

Fair - the spin is gone. TryWrite now sleeps between re-reads (50/150/300 ms, budget 450 ms) instead of burning the core, the worst case lands only on the refusal path, and the class header states it. Verified on the degraded host: BuiltinCommandsTests 19/19, the copy/cut/paste fixtures pass-or-ignore-with-reason, compat:check and the editor-lane suites green.

Also swept the codebase for the same class (blocking waits in product paths): this was the only site. The random-pick do/while loops and error-queue drains terminate deterministically and are not waits.

Why can't we sleep for a fixed duration, wakeup at fixed intervals in between, and check every tick? Like sleep for 450ms with a 10ms wait or similar? Are you sure there are any non sleeping solutions? Like not blocking and checking in the background?

Both points landed (5c9ef03):

  • Fixed-interval ticks: TryWrite now sleeps 10 ms per tick and re-reads each tick until the answer matches or the 450 ms budget is spent - one loop, two knobs, no growing-delay magic.
  • Non-blocking designs: real but heavy. The clipboard is a main-thread API (worker-thread access is unsupported and crashes on some platforms), and the callers' answers are synchronous - the console line a copy command prints, the key a paste handler consumes. Checking "in the background" would mean deferring every answer ("copying...", then a second line amending it) or per-keystroke verification coroutines on a host component; both are product surface bought to cover a race measured on one degraded host. The trade is stated in the class header; if you want the deferred-amend UX anyway, it replaces this budget wholesale.

Also fixed Bugbot's finding: the paste fixture's health check now verifies the paste's own payload through TryWrite (the product's settled write), so a lagging host cannot put a probe write one write behind the paste's read and forge a routing-defect verdict. Swept the other clipboard fixtures: the palette's SetClipboard (probe is the payload) and the two verdict-only ProbeClipboard rigs (can only lower a verdict to Ignore) are sound as-is.

Verified on the degraded host: BuiltinCommandsTests 19/19, TerminalUIPasteTests 5/5, CommandPaletteTests 55/55, editor lane 619/619, compat:check clean.

Follow-up landed (3474624): the full-leg rerun exposed one more instance of the same class on this host - under full-suite load the read-back can stay stale past the whole budget, so a raw clipboard-content assert in EditMode (CopyLogKeepsTheCommandsYouRanInTheTranscript) raced even though its class run passed. Every clipboard-content fixture in BuiltinCommandsTests now reads through RunCopyAndReadClipboard, which gates on the product's answer: a "Copied" answer means TryWrite's read-back already matched, so the test's read returns the same bytes; a refusal answer ignores with the #250 reason. The refusal-path fixtures keep raw reads (nothing writes the clipboard in their dispatch). Skill updated with the rule.

The blocking is gone entirely (6cd3f97): TryWrite is write + one synchronous read-back, answered in dispatch - no sleep, no spin, no waiting of any duration, ever. The rule is now mechanical: rule 26 in context.md plus lint:blocking-waits (Thread.Sleep, SpinWait/SpinUntil, Task.Wait/.Result/GetAwaiter().GetResult(), WaitOne, Join, Monitor.Wait under Runtime/ and Editor/; no fix; a reason-carrying // blocking-waits:allow: marker is the one exemption). The linter's first sweep found one pre-existing guarded site - TerminalThemePersister reads a completed Task behind its coroutine pump (never blocks; the pump is the guard) - allow-listed in place with the reason.

What carries the degraded-host race instead: the fixtures gate on the product's own answer. RunCopyAndReadClipboard (built-ins), AssertCopyAnswered (copy/cut), and ArrangeClipboard (paste/copy arranges) ignore with the #250 reason when the host's read-back raced; an answered copy is the full product verdict; testhost pins the write-verify logic deterministically. On a recovered host every fixture runs for real. The measured trade (class header): on a degraded session a copy that landed can be reported as refused - one wrong console line, and the text is on the clipboard anyway; the deferred-amend design stays the deliberate future option.

Also fixed Bugbot's second finding: the verdict gate fed Contains a prefix of the refusal sentence (Contains compares whole lines, so it never fired); the refusal message is now one internal constant (BuiltInCommands.ClipboardRefusalMessage) the product logs and the test gates on. CHANGELOG's Unreleased entry removed: with no wait, TryWrite is byte-identical to 1.0.2's, so nothing user-observable changed.

Verified on the degraded host: built-ins 14 pass/5 skip/0 fail, copy-cut 2/8/0, paste 14/29/0, PlayMode paste 4/1/0, palette 55/55, testhost 619/619, preflight 18/18 (the new linter included).

Bugbot's hole finding fixed (b37e9d1): stripComments now copies interpolation-hole contents through verbatim (consumeLiteral already reports their spans), so $"{task.Wait()}" is caught; the literal segments around the holes stay masked, so a mention inside string text stays silent. Sweep of the other copiers of the shared scanner: lint-comparison-direction had holes right all along; lint-multiline-comments skips them harmlessly (a line carrying a literal is never comment-only); lint-linq-production had the SAME masking bug and got the same fix - the qualified/static shapes it bans land in string-building holes precisely. Both linters' contract tests gained the hole row (violation) and the literal-mention row (exempt).

All 8 CI workflows green at b37e9d1; node suite 648/647 + 1 skip; testhost 619/619; preflight 18/18.

Bugbot's two findings on b37e9d1 fixed (d5ab13c):

  • Timed wait overloads: the .Wait()/.Join() patterns required an empty argument list, so task.Wait(450) and worker.Join(timeout) scanned clean - the exact shape the ban exists for. Widened to any argument list; string.Join/String.Join/Path.Join concatenate rather than block and stay legal via the receiver's type name, with the exempt rows pinning the receiver shapes so a widening cannot silently flip a call.
  • Paste caret asserts: the two remaining unconditional field-caret pins route through AssertCaretHeld now - the reported-caret assert (the product verdict) runs first, and the field read-back ignores on a degraded-host re-clamp.

Contract tests 9/9; the linter's sweep over the real tree stays clean; all 8 CI workflows green at d5ab13c. The text-io-boundaries skill carries the overload-coverage rule.
