Full disclosure, this is a vibe coded proof of concept.

This PR isn't intended to be merged in it's current state, but instead is to see if others are interested connecting WLED to Music Assistant for syncronized audio. I'm happy to integrate feedback into my PR.

I've been experimenting with multi room audio via Music Assistant and their Snapcast protocol. This PR allows me to send music data direct into WLED over the network instead of using a microphone or actually ingesting audio. Sendspin includes a visualizer role, which is perfect for this.

I'm going to continue to fine tune this usermod. I'm happy to post some videos if you want to see what the synchronization looks like.

Use validSendspinSpectrumConfig() for runtime validation.

validSendspinSpectrumConfig() is currently used only by static_assert checks. readFromConfig() duplicates its validation rules. Keep the per-field checks so each ConfigError remains specific, then use the helper for the combination check:

+                                              requestedSpectrumTrebleTrim, requestedSpectrumInputGate)) {

- Around line 550-568: Update the clear decision in takeFrame so frame.clear is
true when clearRequested is pending, even if streamActive is true. Preserve the
existing inactive-stream behavior.

Review comments at @usermods/sendspin/sendspin.cpp:
- Around line 798-814: Update the Sendspin configuration parsing checks so
missing keys retain their existing defaults instead of being rejected, while
present but invalid values still call rejectConfig. Apply this behavior to the
settings parsed in this block and to url and device-name; return false when any
key is missing so WLED persists the complete configuration on save.
- Around line 745-754: Update onUpdateBegin so the asynchronous OTA callback
only publishes an atomic lifecycle request; defer stopAdapter and adapter
teardown to the main loop, applying the request before any adapter access.
Likewise, have the settings POST path stage a complete pending configuration
snapshot instead of committing fields through readFromConfig; apply it in the
main loop before accessing live configuration fields.

Use an HTTPS URL for the Sendspin submodule.

The documented clean-checkout workflow initializes the submodule without configuring SSH credentials. Use https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp.git, or add SSH authentication for every supported checkout path.

Mark this plan as historical or update it for the active target.

plan.md still presents MagWLED-1 as the target. usermods/sendspin/readme.md (Line 5 and Line 70) and DEBUG.md (Line 9) identify XIAO ESP32-S3 as active and C3 as historical. The plan’s date also predates its October 17, 2026 decision-log entries. Contributors may follow the retired C3 plan. Mark it as archived and link XIAO_ESP32S3.md, or update the target, status, and date.

🌐 Web query:

sendspin-cpp visualizer_role.cpp on_visualizer_stream_end on_visualizer_stream_start callback order

💡 Result:

**In `sendspin-cpp`’s current `main` branch, there’s no guaranteed end-then-start callback sequence.** Each callback is queued separately and dispatched when the client drains its event inbox: a received `stream/end` queues `on_visualizer_stream_end()`, and a `stream/start` queues `on_visualizer_stream_start(config)`. So callbacks follow the order those events are enqueued and drained; for an end followed by a start, expect end then start if both events are preserved in the queue. ([github.com](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/main/src/visualizer_role.cpp))

One caveat: role teardown invalidates queued events from the old generation, so an earlier start or end may be discarded rather than delivered. Teardown itself can also call `on_visualizer_stream_end()`. ([github.com](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/main/src/visualizer_role.cpp))

This is based on the repository’s `main` branch; you didn’t specify a commit or release. ([github.com](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/main/src/visualizer_role.cpp))

github Sendspin sendspin-cpp 90cbd80864bf763fb6a4100f23b1ad2e128c8a75 visualizer_role.cpp callback dispatch

At commit [`90cbd80864bf763fb6a4100f23b1ad2e128c8a75`](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/90cbd80864bf763fb6a4100f23b1ad2e128c8a75/src/visualizer_role.cpp), callback dispatch is split by event type:

- **Visualizer data callbacks** run on the drain thread. It decodes each frame, returns the ring item before calling the listener, then switches on the decoded kind to invoke `on_loudness`, `on_beat`, `on_f_peak`, `on_spectrum`, or `on_peak`. `Kind::NONE` calls nothing. ([github.com](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/90cbd80864bf763fb6a4100f23b1ad2e128c8a75/src/visualizer_role.cpp))
- **Stream lifecycle callbacks** (`on_visualizer_stream_start`, `on_visualizer_stream_end`, `on_visualizer_stream_clear`) are dispatched on the main thread via the client’s inbox drain. Start events also check the queued generation against the current one before calling the listener. ([github.com](https://github.com/Sendspin/sendspin-cpp/blob/90cbd80864bf763fb6a4100f23b1ad2e128c8a75/src/visualizer_role.cpp))

So the source establishes that data callbacks and lifecycle callbacks use different dispatch paths and threads.

Honor a pending clear before applying a restarted stream.

If requestClear() cannot acquire mailboxMutex_, it leaves the old mailbox data in place and sets clearRequested_. If the pinned Sendspin client then delivers a new stream-start callback before takeFrame(), on_visualizer_stream_start() sets streamActive_ to true but does not clear the pending request or mailbox. takeFrame() consumes the request but derives frame.clear only from streamActive_, so applyFrame() can apply the previous stream's loudness and spectrum as active audio.

Include clearRequested in the clear decision.

Suggested fix
-      frame.clear = !frame.streamActive;
+      frame.clear = clearRequested || !frame.streamActive;

Serialize Sendspin lifecycle and configuration updates with the main loop.

UsermodManager::loop() runs in WLED’s main loop. The OTA upload callback runs through AsyncWebServer and calls onUpdateBegin(true). That callback destroys adapter_, while loop() checks otaActive_ only once before making later adapter calls. The pointer can be destroyed during that sequence.

The settings POST path also calls readFromConfig() from the asynchronous web handler. That method writes enabled_, url_, and deviceName_, while loop() reads them without synchronization. Making only otaActive_ and configDirty_ atomic does not fix this race.

Keep adapter teardown and configuration commits in loop(). Have the callbacks publish an atomic request plus a complete pending configuration snapshot. Apply the request and snapshot before accessing adapter_ or the live configuration fields. Alternatively, protect the complete lifecycle and configuration access with one synchronization mechanism.

Update onUpdateBegin so the asynchronous OTA callback only publishes an atomic
lifecycle request; defer stopAdapter and adapter teardown to the main loop,
applying the request before any adapter access. Likewise, have the settings POST
path stage a complete pending configuration snapshot instead of committing
fields through readFromConfig; apply it in the main loop before accessing live
configuration fields.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A single missing config key rejects the whole Sendspin configuration.

getJsonValue() returns false when a key is missing. Each check at Lines 799-814 then calls rejectConfig. The function then returns true at Line 834, so WLED never rewrites the missing key with its default.

This happens when a cfg.json comes from an earlier build of this usermod. Earlier builds may not have keys that were added later, such as peak-source or spectrum-input-gate-db. In that case every stored setting is ignored, including enabled. The usermod stays disabled after each reboot until the user saves the settings page again.

WLED convention is to keep the current default when a key is missing. Treat a missing key as "use the default". Reject a key only when it is present and invalid.

🐛 Proposed fix pattern
-    if (!getJsonValue(top[FPSTR(_enabled)], requestedEnabled)) rejectConfig(ConfigError::Enabled, valid);
+    if (!top[FPSTR(_enabled)].isNull() && !getJsonValue(top[FPSTR(_enabled)], requestedEnabled)) rejectConfig(ConfigError::Enabled, valid);

Apply the same isNull() pre-check to the other keys. For url and device-name, accept a missing key and reject only a value that is present but not a string or not valid. Return false when any key was missing, so WLED writes the full object back to cfg.json.

Update the Sendspin configuration parsing checks so missing keys retain their
existing defaults instead of being rejected, while present but invalid values
still call rejectConfig. Apply this behavior to the settings parsed in this
block and to url and device-name; return false when any key is missing so WLED
persists the complete configuration on save.
