Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Generated clients configured without service ownership now send RPCs without waiting for replies. Methods with return values provide the zero value and any send error.
    • Fixed-size character parameters that exceed their available length are rejected before sending, with an error showing the maximum allowed length.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified how reply handling works for clients using NoClaim or an explicit endpoint, and documented character-parameter length limits.

…the service

A generated client waited for every RPC answer. Without a claim (Options.NoClaim
or an explicit Endpoint) the service sends its answers to the owner, so such
calls could only end in a timeout: a tool like soundctl, which must not claim
the SoundService, could not use the generated clients at all.

The client now records at Dial time whether it owns the service and uses
Conn.SendRPC for the rest, returning the zero value instead of blocking.

While validating against all 13 OpenMower services the void path turned out to
have lost its Call branch (`undefined: err` for services with void RPCs, e.g.
remote_gpio); it is restored.

Golden files regenerated; every service in definitions-open-mower generates and
compiles against this generator.

Walkthrough

Generated Go clients now use SendRPC when NoClaim is set or an explicit Endpoint is used. Otherwise, methods retain the response-waiting Call path. Generated methods also reject char[n] values that are at least n bytes long.

Changes: Generated Go RPC clients

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate ownership-aware RPC methods
xbot_service_interface_go/codegen/render.go
Generated clients track send-only state from NoClaim or Endpoint. Methods use SendRPC in send-only mode and retain Call otherwise. Fixed-length char parameters are checked before sending.
Generated examples and documentation
xbot_service_interface_go/codegen/testdata/demo_service*.golden.go, codegen/README.md, xbot_service_interface_go/README.md
Generated examples show both RPC paths and reject strings of 64 or more bytes for char[64] and 32 or more bytes for char[32]. The READMEs describe ownership conditions, return behavior, and length limits.

The ownership-aware RPC changes are mergeable with normal checks. Numeric-array return generation has an existing compilation defect that should be fixed separately.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 3 files. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Return nil for slice zero values in zeroValue.

zeroValue returns 0 for every type except string and []byte. A numeric-array return such as double[3] maps to []float64, so the generated method receives 0 where a slice is expected and does not compile. The generator emits this invalid value on the normal Call error path and in the send-only branch. The same schemas already failed to compile before this change, so the defect predates this PR. The send-only branch adds one more occurrence of the same invalid return.

🐛 Suggested fix
 func zeroValue(goType string) string {
 	switch goType {
 	case "string":
 		return `""`
 	case "[]byte":
 		return "nil"
 	}
+	if strings.HasPrefix(goType, "[]") {
+		return "nil"
+	}
 	return "0"
 }

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base fdfa00b6ca5d); the change keeps it reachable.

Update zeroValue to return nil for slice types, including generated
numeric-array types such as []float64, while preserving existing zero values for
strings, []byte, and scalar types; ensure this applies to both normal Call error
handling and the send-only branch.
