refactor(api): write the CRD descriptions for users, drop the loud-rejection fields - #447
Every field, kind and array-item description in config/crd/bases is rewritten for an operator reading kubectl explain. Each one says what the field is or does, then what omitting it does, then the gotchas, with immutability last. Field paths are bare, literal values are in double quotes, and the text has no backticks, capitals for emphasis, em dashes, docs/ paths, or implementation words the reader cannot see. Design rationale moved into comments the schema does not carry: above the doc comment on a field, above the markers on a type, as AGENTS.md requires.

Smaller fixes along the way:
GitTarget and GitProvider had the kubebuilder placeholder ("the Schema for the gittargets API"); every kind now says what it is in two or three sentences.
spec/status/conditions/observedGeneration read the same on every kind.
Array items such as rules[] and the grant types take their Go type doc, so those are rewritten too.
F-i:repairPending no longer says "an API edit made after its flush", since the CRDs never define "flush".
AGENTS.md's API section records the conventions so the next field matches.
Checked: regenerating into a scratch dir and comparing against main's CRDs with every description stripped, the only schema differences are the removals below. No marker moved.
The loud-rejection fields are gone
GitTarget's gitProviderRef, branch, parentBranch and clusterProviderRef, FluxClaim's and ArgoCDClaim's clusterProviderRef, and GitProvider's receiver are removed, along with their CEL rules. All were added after v0.53.0, so this is no change against the release. kubectl apply and server-side apply now refuse them as unknown fields. A client that does not validate strictly has them pruned, which is the same behavior the release already relies on for spec.quietPeriod. UPGRADING.md's three sentences that promised the refusal now say this. The admission specs that pinned the refusal messages are gone. The ones that pin kubeProviderRef and gitBranchRef as required, and GitReceiver validation, stay.
eventTemplate and groupTemplate are gone
GitTarget.spec.commit.message.eventTemplate and groupTemplate have done nothing since liveTemplate replaced them: CEL refused them at admission, and the GitTarget controller refused them in Validated. They were kept "for one migration release", and that release has shipped. This PR removes the fields, both refusals, and live_message_migration_test.go, which existed only to pin that migration contract. These two fields were in v0.53.0, so they get a short UPGRADING.md entry.
Failure A diagnostics at V(1)
The three "TEMPORARY at Info" logs are lowered to V(1), now that Failure A is fixed. One caveat: the superseded by a newer resync line in event_router.go was kept at Info for Failure B, which watch-plane-status-convergence-failures.md still lists as open. Its comment now says to raise the verbosity when reproducing B.
Validation
task lint and task test pass. e2e runs in CI on this branch.
Clarified resource configuration, validation, status, and upgrade guidance across the API.
Breaking Changes
Removed deprecated configuration fields for provider references, branch settings, webhook routes, and commit templates. Update existing resources to use the supported fields; removed fields may be rejected or pruned.
Logging
Reduced the visibility of selected routine status and resync logs.
The "GitTarget status published", "render scope result accepted" and
"superseded by a newer resync" lines were raised to Info while Failure A
of watch-plane-status-convergence-failures.md was open. A is fixed, so
the release would otherwise ship them as Info noise; -v=1 brings them
back when reproducing Failure B.

…jection fields
Every field, kind and array-item description is rewritten in one style for
an operator reading kubectl explain: what it is, what omitting it does, the
gotchas, immutability last. Design rationale moves into comments the schema
does not carry. The text is about 18% shorter, and the longest description
drops from 316 to 144 words. RepairPending no longer leans on "flush",
which the CRDs never define. AGENTS.md records the conventions.
The fields kept only to refuse an old spelling are removed with their CEL
rules: GitTarget's gitProviderRef, branch, parentBranch and
clusterProviderRef, FluxClaim's and ArgoCDClaim's clusterProviderRef, and
GitProvider's receiver. None was in v0.53.0. kubectl apply now refuses
them as unknown fields, and UPGRADING.md says so.

Revises descriptions for provider grant scope, resource matching, selectors, authorization outcomes, conditions, stream counts, and pruning.
Claim selection and apply status api/v1alpha3/{applierclaim,argocdclaim,fluxclaim}_types.go, config/crd/bases/configbutler.ai_{argocdclaims,fluxclaims}.yaml
Clarifies claim eligibility and selection, control status, apply phases and reasons, source reporting, repair tracking, suspension state, and hand-back behavior.
Commit windows and target behavior api/v1alpha3/commitrequest_types.go, api/v1alpha3/gittarget_types.go, config/crd/bases/configbutler.ai_{commitrequests,gittargets}.yaml, docs/*
Revises CommitRequest attachment, timer, outcome, and status descriptions. GitTarget commit, placement, encryption, refusal, pruning, suspension, and status descriptions are also updated.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#432: Introduces standalone GitReceiver resources and replaces GitProvider.spec.receiver, which this pull request removes and documents.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#428: Introduces namespaced GitProvider references and repository-branch ownership, which this pull request documents alongside removal of retired GitTarget fields.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#442: Changes grant defaults and explicit-empty behavior, which this pull request documents in the grant and CRD descriptions.

liveTemplate replaced both, and since then they have only been refused,
by CEL at admission and by the GitTarget controller's Validated check.
The migration release they were kept for has shipped, so the fields, both
refusals, and the test that pinned the migration contract go. kubectl
apply now refuses them as unknown fields; UPGRADING.md says so.

Describe the window close, not an unconditional commit.
If maxDuration is "0s" and the attached window has no Git changes, the default "Resolve" action ends the request without a commit. Replace “commits right after attaching” with “closes the window right after attaching.” Regenerate the matching CRD description. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Name the pushed branch in the GitReceiver description.
The description says a delivery wakes every GitBranch whose spec.url names the repository. Dispatch also requires the GitBranch's branch to equal the pushed branch, so a push to main does not wake a release GitBranch. Add that condition to the doc comment, then regenerate config/crd/bases rather than editing the generated YAML.

Include selector exclusions in the Always deletion description.
If an object still exists but does not match the current objectSelector, an Always resync can remove its Git document. The phrase “has no resource on the cluster” tells operators that this document will remain. Describe the removal in terms of resources absent from the rule’s selected resync result.

Describe Total as the types counted by the roll-up.
Total includes blocked types, while Blocked counts types that cannot be watched. Calling Total the number of types “watched” therefore gives operators the wrong meaning for a readiness ratio such as 0/4. Use “resolved types” or another term that includes blocked types, and regenerate the CRD descriptions.

Describe the wildcard exception to the one-namespace rule.
When sourceNamespace is "*", one rule reads every permitted source namespace. The statement that each rule reads one source namespace contradicts the field description and can mislead operators choosing a rule scope. State that one namespace is the default, with "*" as the all-namespaces option. Regenerate the corresponding CRD description.
