Summary

Resolves #2009.

Ultimate Multisite only created and upgraded its tables on the main network. Engine\Table::is_upgradeable() required is_main_network(), and BerlinDB's admin_init → maybe_upgrade() is the only automatic install/upgrade path. Secondary networks in the same database registered wp_wu_{N}_* tables that were never created, and existing secondary-network tables never received schema upgrades.

Changes

inc/database/engine/class-table.php:

  • is_upgradeable(): the main site of any network may install and upgrade (was: main network only). The main network behaves as before.
  • New maybe_install_network_table(): runs from the constructor for network-suffixed tables only (secondary networks) on the first request, front end included.
    • If BerlinDB's recorded version (wpdb_wu_{N}_{table}_version, stored on the main network) is behind, it upgrades an existing table or installs a missing one.
    • It then records the version in one per-network option, wu_network_table_versions, so later requests make a single cached option read and skip the per-table checks.
    • A MySQL named lock (GET_LOCK('wu_tables_{N}', 10)) stops concurrent first requests from creating or altering the same table twice.
  • install() now clears the cached exists() result. Before, a table checked before installation reported "missing" for the rest of the request. This also showed up with BerlinDB's own test-mode maybe_upgrade().
  • Addon tables extend Engine\Table, so they get the same behaviour on secondary networks. The Domains table and the addon tables set $upgrades before calling the parent constructor, so the ordering is safe.

tests/WP_Ultimo/Database/Engine/Table_Test.php: one new test. On a simulated secondary network, constructing Webhooks_Table creates the real wu_{N}_webhooks table, is_upgradeable() is true, and the version is recorded.

Known limitation (unchanged BerlinDB behaviour)

A table that already exists but has no recorded version (for example copied with CREATE TABLE … LIKE) is treated as current and gets no upgrades. UM's own upgrade callbacks are safe to re-run, but addon callbacks may not be, so they aren't replayed. Tables created by the plugin installer always have a recorded version.

Runtime testing

  • Risk: medium (schema creation on every secondary network). Level: runtime-verified.
  • Environment: WordPress 7.1.3 multisite with Multinetwork v1.3.1; networks created with wu_create_network(); plugin loaded from this branch.
Check Result
New network 3, first request (before this change: Table '…wu_3_customers' doesn't exist) 22 tables created; wu_create_customer() and wu_get_customers() work, no DB errors; 22 versions recorded
Same network, second request 0 GET_LOCK / CREATE / ALTER queries
New network 4 with the final code 23 tables created (including Multinetwork's table); product create + meta round trip, no DB errors
Network 2 products table rolled back to 2.0.1-revision.20210607 with date_modified NOT NULL One request ran the 20230601 upgrade: date_modified nullable again, recorded version 2.0.1-revision.20230601
Main network 0 lock/DDL/option queries; wu_network_table_versions not written
  • vendor/bin/phpunit --no-coverage --filter '/(Table|Installer|Loader|Query_Test|Base_Model_Test|Customer_Test|Membership_Test|Product_Test|Payment_Test|Domain_Test|Site_Test|Checkout_Form_Test|Webhook|Event_Manager_Test|Notes_Manager_Test|Magic_Link)/': 1497 tests, 3868 assertions, OK (3 existing skips).
  • PHPStan: no errors. PHPCS: 0 errors.

After deploy

Existing secondary networks (e.g. 4 and 99) create any missing tables and run pending upgrades on their next request. No manual step is needed.

📝 Walkthrough

Table setup now allows upgrades from the main site of any network. On secondary networks, the constructor checks and installs or upgrades network-prefixed tables when needed. A test verifies first-request creation and schema-version registration.

Changes: Secondary-network table setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Upgrade eligibility and install state
inc/database/engine/class-table.php
is_upgradeable() now allows the main site of any network to upgrade tables. install() clears the cached existence result, and the constructor records the original prefix.
Secondary-network installation and verification
inc/database/engine/class-table.php, tests/WP_Ultimo/Database/Engine/Table_Test.php
When network-specific prefixing changes the table prefix, setup checks the network schema version and uses a MySQL named lock to coordinate installation or upgrade. It verifies completion and records the version. The test checks first-request table creation and version registration.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c4027

A first request to a secondary network can fail if table setup waits too long for a lock, though a later request can retry. Handle that failure before table use; add upgrade-path coverage to protect existing networks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c4027

Ordinary visits can now trigger secondary-network database changes. The targets remain network-specific, but requests can continue when setup is incomplete, and recovery after partial upgrades is not fully established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new online schema transition does not make readiness a prerequisite for dependent operations. Lock acquisition failure and unsuccessful post-upgrade checks return normally, and table initialization continues. During a slow or partially failed secondary-network upgrade, requests can therefore proceed against an outdated or partially changed schema. The lock serializes provisioning attempts but does not contain consumers after timeout. This is a failure-containment concern, not a verified authorization bypass; missing secondary-network tables already occurred before this PR.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A request reaching initialization on a secondary network can trigger provisioning of that network’s registered tables. The inspected path does not accept an arbitrary network, table, or migration from request parameters. Shared database resource contention could have broader operational effects, but cross-network data access was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The change expands when visitors can trigger trusted schema work, but this does not by itself establish privilege escalation. No attacker-controlled schema or arbitrary database target was identified. The supported concern is exposure of dependent operations to an incomplete online transition, not verified credential exposure, tenant escape, or authentication bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Prefix, option ownership, and lock identity derive from the current network. Installation-time and metadata guards, version-cache checks, lock acquisition, and post-operation verification constrain provisioning. These controls coordinate schema writers; they do not establish consumer readiness after setup returns unsuccessfully.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure containment is incomplete: the wrapper avoids caching visibly unfinished setup and releases its lock, but communicates no readiness failure to the loader. Subsequent requests can retry, while the current request is not locally prevented from reaching table consumers.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make readiness failure explicit and gate dependent operations with a retryable response or bounded recovery path. Establish migration replay and version-persistence guarantees before treating partially completed upgrades as recoverable during public requests.

Explanation

Issue [#2009] requires installation and upgrades on the main site of each network. Table::is_upgradeable() now returns is_main_site(). Secondary-network table construction calls maybe_install_network_table() on front-end requests, uses BerlinDB table versions, a per-network cached version map, and a MySQL named lock. install() clears the cached existence result. The added test verifies secondary Webhooks table creation, upgrade eligibility, and version recording. The reported runtime checks also cover pending upgrades, later-request query suppression, and unchanged main-network behavior.

Explanation

The changes are limited to inc/database/engine/class-table.php and its focused test. The constructor path, version cache, lock handling, existence-cache invalidation, and test setup directly support issue [#2009]. No unrelated behavior or files are demonstrated.

Cover the pending-upgrade path for existing secondary tables.

The added test deletes the table and its version records, so it only covers installation. Table::maybe_install_network_table() has a separate existing-table branch that calls $this->upgrade(). Webhooks_Table provides a real upgrade through __20230601(). Add a case that keeps the table, records an older version, constructs the table again, and asserts that the nullable date columns are updated. Otherwise, a regression can leave existing secondary tables on the old schema while the creation test still passes.
