Walkthrough
Secondary-network table setup now checks and records schema versions and installs or upgrades network-prefixed tables when needed. Queries against unregistered tables return empty results. An init hook creates default system emails on secondary networks after their posts table exists.
Table tracks schema versions by network, allows upgrade checks on a network’s main site, and clears its cached existence result after installation. When network prefixing changes the table prefix, setup checks the recorded version and uses a named lock to install or upgrade the table. Tests cover table creation, version recording, and restoration of nullable date columns during upgrade.
When a database interface has an empty configured table name, Query::query() returns an empty array or zero for an ungrouped count query. The test checks empty results for ordinary, grouped-count, and ungrouped-count queries, and confirms that no database error is set.
Secondary-network system emails inc/managers/class-email-manager.php
The init hook creates default system emails on secondary networks when the posts table exists and the network has not been marked as initialized. It records completion only when every default email has a nonempty slug and exists.
A secondary-network table lost after setup will not be restored by ordinary requests. Merge is reasonable with owner awareness of the explicit repair path.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2012 is the only active directly linked issue. Its coding requirements are: (a) full scoped table set per secondary network, created idempotently on first use and on upgrade; (b) no sunrise domain query against an unregistered table; (c) default system emails once the posts table exists.
(a) Verified at head in inc/database/engine/class-table.php. Table::is_upgradeable() no longer restricts upgrades to the main network. Table::__construct() calls maybe_install_network_table() when the prefix is network-specific. That method installs a missing table or upgrades an outdated one under a non-waiting GET_LOCK. It records the version in the wu_network_table_versions network option only after verifying that the table exists and is current. Failures set an hourly retry transient. Table::install() clears the cached exists() result. Add-on tables that extend Table use the same path. Table_Test adds secondary-network create and upgrade tests for the webhooks table. Limitation: the constructor skips work when the recorded version matches, so a table dropped after its version was recorded is not reinstalled. The author states this is intentional. The issue does not require that case. Also, networks without wu_setup_finished never build Table objects, so their tables are not created by this path. The issue scope covers networks that Ultimate Multisite serves, so this does not fail requirement (a).
(b) Verified at head in inc/database/engine/class-query.php. Query::query() returns [] (or 0 for ungrouped count queries) when the database property for $this->table_name is empty. The SQL with the empty table name, which the issue reports (FROM wu_5_d), is therefore not built or sent. Query_Test::test_unregistered_network_table_returns_no_items covers this case. The issue allows registering tables or falling back to main-network tables. This PR uses neither option, but the issue's stated expected outcome (no query built against an unregistered table) is met. The PR description says the sunrise fallback is on main through PR #1980. That claim was not visible in inc/class-sunrise.php at head. The verdict does not depend on it.
(c) Email_Manager::maybe_create_secondary_network_system_emails() creates default system emails after the posts table exists. It uses a per-network option to avoid repeated work and marks completion only when the default email slugs exist, per the change summary. Verified by the summary only: the email manager diff could not be read directly.
No coding requirement is unmet on the evidence available.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed areas connect to issue #2012.
inc/database/engine/class-table.php: network-scoped table install, upgrade, locking, retry throttling, and exists() cache invalidation. These implement requirement (a).
inc/managers/class-email-manager.php: late init callback that creates default system emails on secondary networks. This implements requirement (c).
inc/database/engine/class-query.php: empty-table guard in Query::query(). This addresses the sunrise query failure in requirement (b). The issue does not list this file under Files to modify, but the change targets the symptom the issue reports.
tests/WP_Ultimo/Database/Engine/Table_Test.php and tests/WP_Ultimo/Database/Engine/Query_Test.php: tests for the table and query behavior above.
No change is demonstrated to be unrelated to #2012. The diff tool could not return text hunks, so this verdict relies on the file read at head and the change summaries. Those sources do not show unrelated changes.

Handle the table setup exception before plugin loading continues.
When concurrent setup holds wu_tables_{network_id} beyond the 10-second GET_LOCK timeout, Table::maybe_install_network_table() throws if the table is missing or needs an upgrade. Table_Loader::init() constructs the affected table objects directly, and the plugin bootstrap does not catch the exception. This can terminate requests for the secondary network.
Catch and log the setup failure at the loader or plugin-bootstrap boundary. Return a controlled failure or retry path instead of allowing the exception to escape.

…cannot finish
- Skip setup instead of waiting 10s when another request holds the lock; never throw from a Table constructor.
- Retry a failed install/upgrade at most hourly instead of on every request.
- Return no rows when a network's table is not registered (sunrise on networks where setup never finished), instead of querying an empty table name.
I checked that this does not add work to normal requests. Fixes are pushed in 52ec9cbf.
Steady state (unchanged): on a secondary network, each Table constructor reads the per-network wu_network_table_versions option once. It is cached after the first read. Email_Manager adds one more cached option read. The main network is untouched.
Fixed: a failed or blocked setup ran on every request
GET_LOCK(..., 10) could stall a front-end PHP worker for 10 seconds per table while another request was installing. The lock wait is now 0: a request that finds setup in progress skips it.
When the lock was busy and the table was not ready, the constructor threw an uncaught RuntimeException, so the visitor got a 500. It no longer throws.
If install or upgrade failed (permissions, an ALTER error), no version was recorded, so every request tried the DDL again. A failure now sets a site transient (wu_table_setup_failed_{table}, 1 hour), so a broken table is retried at most hourly.
Fixed: the reported FROM wu_N_d errors were not addressed
Production still logs these for blank.ultimatemultisite.com (network 47): 480 lines in the current log, the latest at 2026-10-25 08:51 UTC.
That network has no wu_setup_finished option. Ultimate Multisite therefore returns before setup_tables(), so the new Table code never runs there. Meanwhile Primary_Domain::redirect_to_primary_domain → wu_get_domains still queries an unregistered table.
Engine\Query::query() now returns no rows (or 0 for counts) when $wpdb->{table} is not registered. That costs one isset per query and changes nothing where tables are registered.
Tests: I added Query_Test::test_unregistered_network_table_returns_no_items. It errors without the guard (Undefined property: wpdb::$wu_987_customers) and passes with it. Results: phpunit --filter 'Table_Test|Email_Manager_Test|Domain' passed 1273 tests; Query_Test passed 3. PHPCS and PHPStan are clean.
#2010 is closed in favour of this PR. This PR contains its commit plus these fixes.

# BerlinDB
BerlinDB provides an ORM-like interface for custom database tables in WordPress.
Use it when custom post types, taxonomies, or post meta are no longer the right storage model for your data, but you still want a WordPress-native developer experience: `wpdb` compatibility, schema objects, query builders, row objects, caching hooks, and table upgrade routines.
## Requirements
* PHP 8.1 or newer
* WordPress
* Composer
* MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.2+
BerlinDB generates MySQL/MariaDB-flavored SQL. The supported floor is MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.2 (the baseline for the row-constructor `IN` and related SQL it emits); CI runs the suite against both engines at that floor and at a current release (MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 11.4). Older engines and other databases (PostgreSQL, SQLite, ...) are not supported.
## Installation
composer require berlindb/core
## Quick Start
A typical integration defines four small classes:
* a `Schema` that describes columns and indexes
* a `Table` that creates and upgrades the database table
* a `Row` that shapes returned records
* a `Query` that reads and writes records
### Define A Schema

'length' => '20',
'unsigned' => true,
'extra' => 'auto_increment',
'default' => false,
'cache_key' => true,
'sortable' => true,
),
array(
'name' => 'name',
'type' => 'varchar',
'length' => '200',
'default' => '',

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 5 months ago; use BerlinDB\Database\Kern\Table; ... Create or upgrade the table from plugin bootstrap code:
## Table
`namespace Acme\Database;
use BerlinDB\Database\Kern\Table;
class WidgetsTable extends Table {
protected $name = 'widgets';
protected $description = 'Acme widgets';
protected $prefix = 'acme';
protected $version = '1.0.0';
protected $db_version_key = 'acme_widgets_db_version';
protected $schema = WidgetSchema::class;
}
`
Create or upgrade the table from plugin bootstrap code:
`add_action(
'admin_init',
static function () {
$table = new Acme\Database\WidgetsTable();
$table->maybe_upgrade();
}
);
`
During the PHPUnit test suite, BerlinDB detects the test environment and can force upgrades immediately.
## Naming Notes
* `Table::$name` is the unprefixed table name.
* `Table::$prefix` is your plugin or application prefix.
* WordPress' `$wpdb->prefix` is still prepended by the connection adapter.
* In the example above, the final table name is usually `wp_acme_widgets`.

Install missing tables before relying on the recorded schema version.
For a new secondary network, the physical table can be missing while BerlinDB reports the current version from the main network. needs_upgrade() then returns false, so the current branch does not call install() and sets the hourly failure transient instead.
The network-version fast path has the same defect. It can return without checking the physical table. Update both paths.
‼️IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

Review comment at @inc/database/engine/class-table.php around lines 168 - 174:
Update the table initialization flow so a missing physical table is installed
before relying on the recorded schema version: require parent::exists() in the
network-version fast path, and check table existence before needs_upgrade(),
calling install() when absent and upgrade() only when an existing table needs an
upgrade.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
- Install a missing table even when a schema version is recorded.
- Keep the array result for grouped counts on unregistered tables.
- Create secondary-network system emails on late init, under a non-blocking lock, and mark them done only when every default exists.
Grouped counts (class-query.php): fixed. An unregistered table now returns [] for count + groupby, matching BerlinDB. The test covers it.
Missing table with a recorded version (class-table.php): fixed on the setup path. A missing table is installed whatever version is recorded, and an existing table is upgraded only when it needs it. Not applied to the fast path: a table that is dropped after its version was recorded would need a SHOW TABLES per table on every request, and this PR must not add per-request work. That case is an out-of-band drop, which an operator repairs.
Emails registered on wp_ultimo_load: fixed. They now run on init at priority 99, after text domains load.
Duplicate emails and completion marked without verification: fixed. A non-blocking network lock wraps creation; create_system_email() already skips existing slugs; the done flag is set only when every default slug exists, otherwise a later request retries.
RuntimeException from the constructor: already removed in 52ec9cbf.
phpunit --filter 'Table_Test|Email_Manager_Test|Query_Test|Domain' passed 1276 tests. PHPCS and PHPStan are clean.
