fix(nip-43): admit users inside a serializable transaction - #1075
admit_user() is guarded by PERFORM ASSERT_SERIALIZED(), and assert_serialized() raises SN_NOT_SERIALIZABLE unless current_setting('transaction_isolation') is serializable (migrations/20230118_190000_confirm_invoice_func.js:31). UserRepository.admitUser called the function on whatever client it was handed — and its default was the pooled client, whose connections are at the default read-committed. Every NIP-43 kind 28934 join therefore claimed its invite code and then failed at admission, exactly as the report describes.
The payments path never hit this because it passes its own Transaction, which begins with isolationLevel: 'serializable' (src/database/transaction.ts:12). The join path passes nothing.
The fix
admitUser now opens its own serializable transaction when the caller supplies no client, and uses the caller's client unchanged when one is given — so payments-service.ts:225,231 keeps working inside the transaction that also updates the invoice.
Reproduction and test
Red first, with the two tests added in this commit:
$ npx mocha test/unit/repositories/user-repository.spec.ts
1) UserRepository .admitUser opens a serializable transaction when no client is supplied:
TypeError: client.raw is not a function
The old code took the default client straight to raw, with no transaction around it. Green after the change: 25 passing in that file, 2983 passing across the suite.
The unit test pins the contract (transaction(cb, {isolationLevel: 'serializable'})); the link from that option to the server is knex's own, verified in the shipped dependency: lib/dialects/postgres/execution/pg-transaction.js:6 renders BEGIN TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL serializable;. No Postgres was reachable from the sandbox to run the SQL end to end — container creation is denied here — so the failure was reproduced at the code path rather than against a live server.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed NIP-43 join requests that could fail when admitting a user. Admission now runs reliably when no transaction is provided, while continuing to honor a transaction supplied by the caller.
Tests
Added coverage for successful relay joins using valid, one-use invite codes and refusals for unknown codes. Tests also verify that refused requests do not admit the user.
admit_user() opens with PERFORM ASSERT_SERIALIZED() and raises
SN_NOT_SERIALIZABLE outside a serializable transaction, but admitUser called it
on the default read-committed connection whenever the caller supplied no client
— which is every NIP-43 join. The join request reached the handler, the invite
was claimed, and the admission then failed.
admitUser now opens its own transaction with isolationLevel serializable when no
client is given, and keeps using the caller's transaction otherwise, so the
payments path is unchanged.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
admitUser now uses a serializable transaction when no client is supplied and uses a supplied client directly. Unit tests cover both paths. NIP-43 integration scenarios cover admission with a valid invite and refusal with an unknown invite.
admitUser runs through a serializable transaction when no client is supplied. A supplied client runs the call directly. Unit tests cover both paths, and the changeset documents the behavior.
Integration scenarios cover a valid one-use invite and an unknown invite code. The added steps authenticate clients, submit join requests, and check admission and request results.
Admission now uses a serializable transaction by default. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 99deb
The change restores admission under the database’s required isolation level without weakening invite or authentication checks. Payment callers retain their existing transaction ownership. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this change was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The restored capability is membership admission for the requesting authenticated pubkey on the relay when NIP-43 is enabled and its invite claim succeeds. The inspected change does not grant broader database authority to the request.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The event pubkey must belong to the socket’s authenticated identities before invite consumption. The same pubkey is passed to both invite claiming and admission; failed claims return before admission.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Invite claiming and admission remain separate transactions. Failure or interruption after a successful claim can consume a use without admitting the user, with no compensation in the join handler. This behavior predates the PR; the change removes the deterministic isolation failure rather than introducing this partial-commit state.
inferred — Post-admission cache invalidation remains best-effort. Failure to remove a cached denial can temporarily reject an admitted user; this unchanged behavior does not itself grant admission to an unauthorized pubkey.

There was no nip-43 feature at all, so the stored function's serializable
guard was never exercised from the application: the repository test always
supplied a client and the strategy test stubbed admitUser. This drives an
authenticated client through a real join against the harness database and
asserts the user row is admitted — the case that failed with
SN_NOT_SERIALIZABLE.
Second commit: ea47a9d adds the coverage whose absence let this reach a release.
Why no test caught it
test/unit/repositories/user-repository.spec.ts — both admitUser tests passed a stubbed client, so the default-parameter branch (the one the join uses) never ran.
test/unit/handlers/event-strategies/join-request-event-strategy.spec.ts:36 — stubs admitUser itself, so it asserts the call happens, never what it does.
test/integration/features/nip-43/ drives the real path against the harness database: connect, take the relay's AUTH challenge, authenticate as a user (kind 22242 with challenge and relay tags), create an invite code in invite_codes, publish a kind 28934 join with the claim tag, then assert the users row is is_admitted. A second scenario proves an unknown code is refused with restricted: invalid or expired invite code and leaves no admitted row.
test/integration/settings.yaml gains nip43.enabled: true; without it the handler refuses every join as restricted: NIP-43 is not enabled on this relay before reaching the repository.
Verified here as far as the sandbox allows: cucumber-js --dry-run --tags @nip43 binds all 11 steps (no undefined), biome lint and format clean, and the unit suite is unchanged at 2983 passing. The feature itself only executes in the CI integration job, which is the point — that job has the Postgres this sandbox cannot start.

- Line 36: Update the challenge subscription in waitForChallenge so a
synchronously replayed AUTH challenge can complete without accessing the
subscription before it is assigned. Use a one-shot RxJS operator or arrange
cleanup outside the initial replay callback, while preserving timer cleanup and
challenge resolution.
- Line 61: Update the authentication-event path that calls publishEvent so it
sends the event using the AUTH message type and waits for the matching OK
result; do not use publishEvent for kind 22242, since it sends EVENT. Preserve
the existing scenario flow after authentication succeeds.
Review comments at @test/integration/settings.yaml:
- Line 26: Limit the membership override in the shared integration settings to

afterward so other integration scenarios, including NIP-02, run without the
override.

Three defects the reviewers caught, all real:
- authenticate() sent the kind 22242 event with publishEvent, which emits an
EVENT message; the handler refuses auth events on that path. Send
['AUTH', event] and wait for its OK.
- waitForChallenge referred to its own subscription inside the callback, but
ReplaySubject replays the buffered challenge synchronously, so the binding
was still uninitialised and the promise never settled. firstValueFrom owns
the teardown.
- settings.yaml enabled nip43 relay-wide, and NIP-43 alone gates every
publish on admission — every other feature's fresh identities would be
refused. Enable it in a @nip43-scoped Before hook and restore afterwards.

Both scenarios failed in CI with 'relay did not send an AUTH challenge'. The
relay does send one on connect, but the shared 'someone called' step builds
its message stream after the socket's 'open' event, so the challenge had
already been parsed and dropped by the time anything was listening.
Connect directly in this feature, attach the listener before 'open' resolves
and buffer into a ReplaySubject that the rest of the helpers use. The socket
and identity still land in the world's usual slots, so the shared After hook
closes and cleans up as before.
The other 127 integration scenarios pass, so the scoped setting and the AUTH
message type are not what was wrong.
