Problem

A microphone or system audio that stops delivering samples (a USB hiccup, a Bluetooth profile switch, a capture that wedges without an error) stays "live" while the program plays silence for it. Video sources already read "stalled" after a second without a picture; audio sources had no last-delivery time to check. Raised on moq-dev/studio#5.

Approach

  • Since moq-dev/studio#27 each audio capture is a moq_audio::capture::Producer. The driver now takes one more consumer of it, beside the bus channel, and stamps the arrival of every buffer, as show does for pictures. Nothing goes into the bus.
  • Feed::stalled covers microphones and system audio with the same STALL (1 s), and returns Stall::Picture(since) or Stall::Sound(since) so the wording says what went missing.
  • Sources panel: "stalled", hovering to "no new sound for N s" (or "no new picture").
  • Health: "Source mic stalled: no new sound for N s, so the program plays silence for it." An audio stall counts while its strip is unmuted, since every audio source plays in the program; a picture stall counts while a visible item draws the source on program.
  • Health's picture check now follows what the program draws: every scene on air (Compositor::on_air, so a scene fading out too) and the top layer, with a cloned item mapped to the source it shows. Before, it read only the program scene's items by their own name, so a camera shown through a clone or on the top layer was missed.
  • Deletes quest/m0/audio-stall.md and its link.

Impact

  • Sources panel and Health: a microphone or system audio that goes a second without samples reads "stalled". README's Sources row and Health section now describe stalls.
  • Health: a frozen camera or broadcast on the top layer, in a scene fading out, or shown through a clone now reports a stall.
  • Public API (moq-scene, workspace-internal): Feed::stalled returns Option<source::Stall> instead of Option<Duration>; Stall::since() gives the duration. health::Local::stalled holds (String, Stall). No wire, catalog, or scene-file change.
  • Cost: one more capture reader per audio source, woken per device buffer (about every 10 ms) to take a mutex and read the clock.

Choices made without asking

  • Arrival time on the studio clock (kio::clock::now()), not the buffer's capture timestamp, to match how pictures are stamped.
  • A muted audio source still reads stalled in the Sources panel but not in Health, mirroring hidden video items.
  • Audio-only broadcasts stay out of scope: a broadcast stalls by its picture alone, as before.

Alternatives

  • A per-channel last-write time in moq-audio's bus: the side channel the quest ruled out, and a moq change.
  • Reading the bus meter for silence: a muted or quiet mic is not a stalled one.

Validation

  • just ci passes on 2601d49, after merging main (includes clippy with moq-scene/capture,moq-studio/capture,moq-studio/openh264,moq-studio/cef).
  • source::tests::a_live_source_without_new_deliveries_stalls covers microphones and system audio with a paused clock; health::tests::problems_list_worst_first covers the audio wording.
  • The capture reader itself is not unit tested: capture::Producer opens only real devices, with no test constructor in moq-audio.

Follow-ups

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, round 2 on head 2601d49 against origin/main dba63e5: no findings. Round 1 on b30ea83 also had none.

Online reviews on b30ea83: CodeRabbit's README wording, pullfrog's Health README paragraph, and pullfrog's top-layer gap are fixed in 2601d49. The hear arguments in CodeRabbit's non-thread findings are refuted in a PR comment: the missing hear test, an Ok(None) spin, and split buffers. The OpenAI review found nothing.

…p delivering

Each audio capture gets one more consumer of its capture::Producer that
stamps every buffer it delivers, so a microphone or system audio that goes
quiet for a second reads "stalled" in the Sources panel and Health, as a
camera does. Feed::stalled now says what stalled (Stall::Picture or
Stall::Sound), Health names an audio stall only while the source is
unmuted, and it maps cloned items to the source they show.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed head b30ea83. No actionable issue found in the audio-stall monitoring. The independent reader updates delivery time and propagates capture failures; Health considers unmuted audio without requiring scene visibility and resolves picture clones. Both supported capture backends wait for and retain a first buffer before reporting a successful open.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the Studio changes, pinned capture/fanout paths and tests. I did not run tests or exercise microphone or system-audio hardware; the capture reader itself is not unit-tested, as the PR notes.

Walkthrough

Stall tracking now covers microphones and system audio as well as cameras and broadcasts. The source layer records picture and audio delivery times and identifies stalls after one second. Studio health includes applicable sound and picture stalls, and reports the missing media type. Source status hover text uses the shared stall description. The README and quest documentation were also updated.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 2601d

The stall reporting change has no established merge-blocking defect. Additional tests would strengthen protection for health filtering and sound-stall grading; the Sources and Health documentation now distinguish their reporting conditions.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: microphones and system audio now read as stalled when they stop delivering samples. It matches the summarized changes in source.rs, engine.rs, health.rs and ui.rs, which extend stall tracking from cameras and broadcasts to audio sources. The title is a single, specific sentence with a conventional prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem (audio sources with no last-delivery time, so the program plays silence for stalled mics) and gives an approach that matches the changeset: a capture reader that stamps buffer arrivals, Feed::stalled covering microphones and system audio, Sources and Health wording, the Stall enum, the Health top-layer and clone mapping, and deletion of the quest document. It also covers impact, validation and follow-ups, all related to the code changes.

Add a test that drives hear with buffer arrivals.

The audio cases set driver.delivered directly. No test calls listen or hear, so a regression that stops hear from recording buffer arrivals would leave these tests passing.

hear ignores the value returned by capture.read(). If that API returns Ok(None) when its stream ends, the loop may repeatedly read the ended stream without yielding.

The source thread may spin at full CPU instead of stopping or reporting the ended capture.

This can occur when: An audio capture consumer reaches normal end-of-stream while listen is running.

listen gives capture.consume() to both the bus and the new timestamp reader. If consumers divide buffers rather than each receiving every buffer, the timestamp reader may take samples away from program audio.

The program may have missing or intermittent audio despite the capture delivering buffers.

This can occur when: A microphone or system-audio capture delivers buffers with both consumers active.

ℹ️ No critical issues — two minor notes: one user-facing README paragraph still scopes stalls to camera/broadcast, and Health's "where the program shows it" check misses the top layer.

Reviewed changes

  • Stall kinds — Feed::stalled now returns Stall::Picture or Stall::Sound (with Stall::since()), stamped by show() for pictures and by a new hear() reader for microphone and system-audio buffers.
  • Audio delivery reader — Driver::listen takes a second moq_audio::capture::Consumer that reads every buffer and stamps its arrival, joined with the device and bus readers through try_join!.
  • Health gating — Engine::local iterates every feed, counting Stall::Sound while the strip is unmuted and Stall::Picture only when a visible program item resolves to the source through Collection::capture, so clones count.
  • Surfaces and docs — Sources hover and Health wording distinguish picture from sound, the README Sources row and inline tests are updated, and the completed quest file plus its index entry are removed.

Replies to the CodeRabbit review findings on b30ea83 that are not threads:

  • A test that drives hear with buffer arrivals: refuted. hear needs a moq_audio::capture::Consumer, and the only public way to get one is capture::Producer::open, which opens a real device. The synthetic Stream::Test in moq/rs/moq-audio/src/capture.rs is #[cfg(test)] inside moq-audio. A test seam would be a moq change, and the loop it would cover is two lines. The stall logic it feeds is tested with a paused clock in source::tests::a_live_source_without_new_deliveries_stalls.
  • hear may spin on Ok(None): refuted. capture::Consumer::read returns Result<Buffer, Error>, not an Option (moq/rs/moq-audio/src/capture/fanout.rs:173). When capture ends, it returns the shared error, which ends hear and the try_join!.
  • Two consumers may split the buffers: refuted. Each capture::Producer::consume is an independent reader of every buffer (fanout.rs: "Clones start at the same cursor and then advance independently"), and moq-audio's readers_share_samples_times_and_source_gaps_without_retaining_the_device test checks it.

The OpenAI review on b30ea83 reported no findings.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed head 2601d49 against base dba63e5, focusing on changes since my review of b30ea83 and accounting for the merge from main.

No new actionable findings. The fix in rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:652–665 now includes visible sources in both on-air scenes and the top layer, with clone resolution matching the compositor. The README now correctly separates Sources status from Health's visibility/mute gating. The main-branch merge preserves the previously reviewed PR changes.

Overall direction looks sound. Verification was GitHub-only static review of the incremental changes and relevant compositor/collection paths. I did not run tests or exercise audio hardware; the head's Check workflow was still in progress when inspected.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes

  • Health picture gating — Engine::local now builds its shown set from every scene on air (Compositor::on_air, so the fading-out scene too) plus the top layer, and resolves each visible item through Collection::capture, so a source drawn only through a clone or over the program counts.
  • README stall wording — the Sources row no longer ties a stall to program use, and the Health section now reads "a source stalled (a camera or broadcast the program draws, or an unmuted microphone or system audio)".

Add an engine-level test for the stall filter in Engine::local.

No test calls Engine::local and asserts on the stalled list it returns. The health tests build Local by hand. A regression in the visible-clone mapping or in the muted-sound filter can therefore pass the current suite. A test that uses a visible clone and a muted microphone, and asserts the stalls returned for each, would cover both branches. A microphone fixture may need a test seam, because the capture producer opens real devices.
