Problem

quest/m0/cef-x11-nvidia.md: under X11 on NVIDIA, browser sources never painted on the GPU path ("gbm device is missing").

Rerun on nixos (RTX 3070 Ti, NVIDIA 580.178, GNOME's XWayland), as the quest's lead from moq-dev/studio#73 asked:

  • --use-angle=gl-egl (fix(scene): browser sources paint on the GPU under X11 on Mesa #73) already fixes it. Every paint is a shared texture, and a full-frame readback is pixel-exact. With the flag removed, the GPU process logs gbm_support_x11.cc:133 Can't create buffer -- gbm device is missing, which matches the quest.
  • What remained is the quest's other lead, the dual-GPU case. On nixos2 (Intel UHD 630 running GNOME's XWayland, plus an RTX 2070), with the studio on the RTX 2070, CEF still allocates on Intel (modifier 0x0100000000000001, Intel X-tiled). NVIDIA's Vulkan imports it with that modifier, and the picture comes out scrambled: 2129 of 4096 pixels are wrong. The source still reads as GPU, and the suite passed, because every test page is one flat color.

The cause is in Chromium: under X11, CreateX11GbmDevice (ui/gfx/linux/gbm_support_x11.cc) takes its GBM device from DRI3Open on the X server's root window, so CEF always allocates on the GPU that runs the X server. --render-node-override does not apply there. Headless Ozone cannot help either: it hands out TestPixmaps with no DMA-BUF.

Approach

  • At setup, when the GPU path would use X11, the studio asks the X server for its DRI3 device (x11rb, pure Rust, already in the graph at 0.13) and resolves it to a PCI address through /sys/dev/char. If that is not the studio's GPU, or the server offers no DRI3 device, pages take the CPU path. This decision comes from the observed probe result, never from a timeout.
  • Every CPU-path decision now records why: no display, a software device, no DMA-BUF import, an X server on another GPU, or, on the GPU path, a GPU process that painted into memory anyway. Paint::Cpu carries that reason. The Sources panel shows it on hover, and Health lists a degraded problem for each browser source the program shows that is uploaded from memory. A page that stops drops its paint path along with its picture, so a failed page is reported as failed only.
  • New a_page_keeps_its_layout test: a red strip down the left of the top half, over green, checked across the whole frame. A flat-color page cannot tell a misread tiling. On the hybrid, it fails with the probe bypassed and passes with it.
  • Comments that said XWayland never paints on NVIDIA are fixed. The quest is finished and deleted.

Impact

  • With the X server and the studio on different GPUs under X11 (for example an Optimus laptop on Xorg, with the studio on the discrete GPU), browser sources take the CPU path and say why, instead of showing scrambled pictures.
  • Sources panel: the CPU label's hover names the actual reason, not a list of possible ones. A failed page shows no GPU or CPU label.
  • Health: "Source x is uploaded from memory every frame rather than copied on the GPU: ." (degraded) while the program or a published scene shows it.
  • On NVIDIA under X11 with one GPU: no change, since it already paints on the GPU path since fix(scene): browser sources paint on the GPU under X11 on Mesa #73.
  • Public API (moq-scene, unpublished, moq-studio is its only consumer): browser::Paint::Cpu now carries an Arc<str> reason, and Paint is no longer Copy. Wire: none (the helper protocol is unchanged).

Choices made without asking

  • The CPU path for the hybrid, not cross-GPU import. Importing on the X server's GPU and copying to the studio's would need a second device and a copy through system memory. Picking the X server's GPU for the whole studio would move encoding and compositing to the integrated GPU.
  • An unknown studio PCI address under X11 takes the CPU path, with that as the reason, since the studio cannot tell whether the textures would be readable. Mesa and NVIDIA both report it (VK_EXT_pci_bus_info).
  • Health grades it degraded. problems has no lighter level, and the quest asked for a note in Health. It counts only while a live picture (program or a published scene) shows the source.
  • No ! in the title. The Paint change breaks only the unpublished moq-scene, whose one consumer this PR updates.

Alternatives

  • Validate the modifier at import against the studio's device's supported modifiers. That fails each page at runtime instead of deciding at setup, and the textures from the X server's GPU could never be read anyway.
  • --use-angle=vulkan on X11: allocation still goes through GBMSupportX11, so it is the same device.

Validation

Every GPU run was over ssh in GNOME's session, with WAYLAND_DISPLAY unset, DISPLAY=:0, and the session's XAUTHORITY. The Vulkan loader is the shell's, since moq-dev/studio#74, so nixos needed no VK_DRIVER_FILES. On nixos2, VK_DRIVER_FILES picks the studio's GPU. The decision and paints were printed by temporary eprintln!s that are not committed.

Host Studio GPU Head Raster binary(browser)
nixos, RTX 3070 Ti NVIDIA main (claim) GPU, X11 8/9, all 17 paints Gpu (×3 runs)
nixos NVIDIA main with gl-egl removed GPU, X11 0 paints, "gbm device is missing"
nixos NVIDIA this PR GPU, X11 9/10, layout pixel-exact
nixos2, X on Intel UHD 630 RTX 2070 main (claim) GPU, X11 7/9 pass, but the layout is scrambled (2129/4096 wrong)
nixos2 RTX 2070 this PR CPU: "the X server runs on another GPU (0000:00:02.0) than the studio's, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (0000:01:00.0)…" 9/10
nixos2 RTX 2070 this PR, probe bypassed GPU, X11 a_page_keeps_its_layout fails: (2, 0) is [0, 255, 0, 255], not [255, 0, 0, 255]
nixos2 Intel UHD 630 this PR GPU, X11 8/10
nixos lavapipe, no display this PR CPU 10/10

The failures are known and planned in moq-dev/studio#75:

  • copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard fails on every X11 GPU run (CEF's native copy goes to the X clipboard).
  • cookies_survive_a_restart fails on every nixos2 run, and passes on nixos.

The first run on nixos after a rebuild, before any change, painted nothing within the test's 20 s. Five later runs, with or without CEF logging, all painted within 3 s, so this looks like a cold start, not a bug. It is noted here, not chased.

Other checks:

  • nix develop --command quest gate just ci on nixos (Linux) at 1f50e4c, and again at 3514b10 (main at 2bbdd5b merged in, including moq-dev/studio#71): passes both times, 278 tests.
  • The browser suite under XWayland on nixos at 3514b10: same result, 9/10 with only copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard failing.
  • At 660d8e6 (CodeRabbit's findings), on nixos: quest gate just ci passes (278 tests); the browser suite under XWayland on NVIDIA is 9/10, only copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard failing; on lavapipe with no display it is 10/10. The layout test's added horizontal boundary was not rerun on nixos2; the pixel that failed there with the probe bypassed, (2, 0), is still asserted red.
  • The merge with feat(studio)!: published scenes replace canvases #71 was resolved by hand. feat(studio)!: published scenes replace canvases #71 moved Health's source facts to Local, with where each source is shown. uploaded sits beside them and counts a browser source that any live picture shows, as stalled does.
  • quest check on macOS: passes. Nothing was built on macOS (disk space).
  • The Sources panel hover and the Health line were not checked in a running studio. The Health text is covered by problems_list_worst_first.
  • The 7 compositor GPU tests that crash on exit on NVIDIA were not run (just render-sw's compositor step).
  • Not tested: Xorg (not XWayland) on NVIDIA, since neither host runs an Xorg session.

  • Online reviews of 3514b10: OpenAI, no findings. CodeRabbit: a failed page kept its paint path, so Health reported it uploaded beside its failure (fixed, the page now drops its paint when it stops); add a horizontal boundary to the layout test (applied); bound the X11 probe with a timeout (refuted: the window opens on the same display through libxcb right after, with no timeout, and REVIEW.md lists a timeout for a hang under Not findings).

Under X11, CEF allocates shared textures on the device the X server hands
out over DRI3, whatever --render-node-override says. With the studio on
another GPU, that GPU's tiling came out scrambled while the source still
read as copied on the GPU. The studio now asks the X server for its DRI3
device at setup and takes the CPU path, saying why, when it is not the
studio's GPU.

A page painting into memory now carries why, which the Sources panel shows
on hover and Health lists while the program shows the source.

On NVIDIA under XWayland, the GPU path already paints since --use-angle=gl-egl
(#73), which finishes quest/m0/cef-x11-nvidia.md.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed 3514b10 against 2bbdd5b. No actionable introduced findings.

The DRI3 probe checks the allocation device rather than assuming render-node-override controls X11. A mismatch or unavailable identity selects the existing CPU path with a reason carried through Paint into Sources and Health. Health filters to sources shown by live pictures, including published scenes and clones. The patterned full-frame regression can detect tiling corruption that flat-color checks miss. This is a proportionate fallback rather than adding a second GPU and cross-device copy machinery.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the probe, helper transport, callers, diagnostics, and regression. Chromium's current upstream DRI3 allocation path was checked, not CEF's exact Chromium revision. No quest context, builds, tests, GPU/Xorg trials, or running-UI checks performed; the reported hardware results and existing clipboard/cookie failures were not independently reproduced.

Walkthrough

Browser GPU selection now checks device support and, on X11, whether the X server’s DRI3 GPU matches the studio GPU. CPU-paint events carry a fallback reason. The Sources panel hover text and Health panel report that reason for shown browser sources. The README describes display selection and reporting. The pull request also removes an NVIDIA CEF requirement and its investigation document, and adds browser rendering tests.

No new actionable findings since 3514b10.

Direction: clearing Paint when the stopped page's picture is cleared fixes the stale diagnostic at its source, rather than adding a Health-only filter. The route guard is dropped first, so subsequent helper paints cannot repopulate the stopped page's state. The crash regression checks paint() is None before reload. The layout fixture now varies along both axes and checks away from interpolation boundaries, covering row corruption as well as the previous vertical strip.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the three-file delta and browser route/paint lifecycle and test setup. No builds, quest context, browser tests, GPU/Xorg runs, or live Sources/Health checks performed. The reported hardware results were not independently reproduced. This is a COMMENT, not approval.
