feat(ui): add interface, terminal, editor font size and spacing settings - #2224
This PR adds font size and spacing settings to the UI tab.
Settings
Interface font size (50-200%), Terminal font size (8-32 px), Editor font size (8-32 px), and Spacing density (50-200%). Each has a stepper and a reset.
A live preview that follows the steppers before the user presses Save.
How it works
Each value maps to one CSS variable on <html>. A value that is not set removes the override, so the stylesheet default applies.
With nothing set, the layout and the sizes of code, diff, and terminal blocks do not change. The editor size reaches the diff view only while a value is set (a class on <html>).
The preview sets each unset value to initial. A value saved on <html> cannot leak into the preview, so a reset shows before Save. The preview uses the same fallbacks as the live UI.
Review notes
The four settings go through the updateSettings message. Reset values are sent as null so that they clear the stored value.
The review gate flagged that the four values were part of a save that was not atomic. The save pipeline changes below fix that. See "Save pipeline changes".
Most of the diff is the 17 locale files. Only the ui.appearance strings are added.
Save pipeline changes
The "Persistence Integrity" check reported that the four appearance values are saved in a loop that can stop half way. A failed write left some values stored and the rest not, and the webview could not tell. The changes below fix that, and nothing else about how settings are applied. The API configuration, telemetry, and debug messages are sent immediately, exactly as before, and every side effect of a setting runs in the same place as before.
webviewMessageHandler.ts, updateSettings: the four appearance values (interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, spacingScale) are saved all-or-nothing. Each is recorded, with the value it had, right before it is written. If a write fails, the ones this save already stored are put back in reverse order, and so is the one whose own write failed, in case it changed the stored value before failing. The store is shared by the sidebar and the editor tab, so saves can overlap. The writes to one key form a chain. A write is put back only while it is the latest one and the stored value is still what it wrote, so a newer save's value, and a change made outside a save (an import), are kept. A write that fails while a newer one is pending is taken out of the chain, so if the newer one fails too, it restores what was stored before either of them, in whichever order they fail. Writes of one appearance value run one at a time, from every save and every rollback and across providers, and each stays in line until it has reached durable storage, so a slower write cannot complete after a newer one and overwrite it. A write that fails does not hold up the ones behind it. Writes that have finished are taken out of the chain, so nothing is kept about them once the saves are over. The result is posted as settingsSaveResult (success or the error), also when the state refresh fails, and the refresh runs after the values were put back.
The four appearance values are validated in the extension host, with the schemas they are defined with (an integer within its bounds, or null for a reset), before any side effect runs or any setting is stored. An invalid value changes nothing, not even the valid settings sent with it. The save fails with an error and the webview is told. The webview is not trusted: the stepper's limits do not bind a message that was written by hand. Other settings are not checked, as before.
A failure while writing any other setting follows the existing error path, as before, with one addition: the webview is told the save failed (it is waiting for the result), and then the error is rethrown. No error is shown for it, as before. Every other setting is written exactly as before, and the loop itself is unchanged.
The error shown for a failed appearance save does not claim a full restore: it says some settings may be left partly changed.
Not part of the transaction, on purpose: every other setting, and the side effects that run in place while saving (the language, speech, the terminal settings, the command lists in VS Code configuration, the MCP servers, the destructive command guard install). They behave as before and are not undone by a failed save.
SettingsView.tsx: only a save that changes an appearance value waits for the host's answer. For that save, Save is disabled while it is pending, and the "unsaved changes" flag clears only when the host reports success, so a failed save keeps the edits and can be retried. An edit made while it is pending keeps the flag. Request ids (saveRequestId.ts) combine a per-load id with a counter, so an answer from an earlier mount or before a reload cannot match a later save. Every other save behaves exactly as before: no request id, nothing to wait for, and the flag is cleared at once. The existing SettingsView tests for those saves are unchanged.
packages/types: the settingsSaveResult message type. common.json (18 locales): errors.settings_save_failed, shown when a save is rolled back.
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests pass. New tests cover the appearance save and reset, the ExtensionStateContext hydrate and update path, and the save result flow (success, failure, edit during a save, late answers).
Extension tests cover the all-or-nothing save (restore order, a newer value is kept, a failing restore, no request id, a failed state refresh).
A Playwright snapshot covers the preview in four themes, with set values and with a reset while <html> holds saved values.
Manual: open Settings > UI. Change each value. Check the preview. Press Save. Check the chat. Reset each value.
Resolve them on the pull request, or post @coderabbitai approve as a new top-level comment to resolve them and request approval.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added controls to adjust interface scale, chat spacing, terminal text, and editor/code text, with options to reset each setting.
Added a live preview of appearance changes. Adjustments also apply to chat, queued messages, tool rows, terminal, code, and diff views.
Bug Fixes
Appearance settings are validated when saved, and save failures are reported. Navigation waits for pending saves; if a save receives no response, a notice explains it may still complete after leaving.
Documentation
Added translations for appearance controls, preview text, and save-status messages across supported languages.
The change adds four configurable appearance settings, webview controls, live previews, and CSS application. Host state carries sequenced values. Host save, import, and configuration paths validate and coordinate appearance writes, with rollback and refresh behavior for failures and deferred writes.
Changes: Appearance settings and persistence
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Appearance contracts and rendering packages/types/src/*, webview-ui/src/utils/*, webview-ui/src/context/*, webview-ui/src/index.css, webview-ui/src/components/chat/*, webview-ui/src/components/common/*
The schema defines four optional appearance settings and their ranges. The webview applies the values through CSS variables, and sequenced state updates preserve newer appearance values.
Settings controls, preview, and save acknowledgements webview-ui/src/components/settings/*, webview-ui/src/hooks/useLatestRef.ts, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx
The settings view adds number steppers and a live preview. Appearance saves await host results and handle failures, timeouts, late results, and pending navigation. Locales add appearance labels and an unanswered-save notice.
Host paths validate appearance values and serialize writes per key. Failed writes can be rolled back. Updates, imports, and configuration changes use the write chain, with state refreshes for deferred settlement or failed writes.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1562: Relates to settings restoration; this change adds per-key serialization and rollback for appearance writes through API.setConfiguration.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2223: Adds request-ID save acknowledgements for time and date settings, which this change extends to appearance settings.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f51e8
The appearance settings feature is largely in place. Several minor edge cases remain, and the mutation-diff check is failing, so it needs a waiver or a narrower scope before merge.

Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It links the issue and describes the feature, implementation, tests, and manual checks. Explanation
[#2222] UISettings adds four bounded steppers, resets, and a live preview. NumberStepper supports keyboard input and accessibility descriptions. Appearance variables apply sizes and spacing to chat, terminal, code, and diff views; clearing values removes the overrides. Locale files add the strings. Automated tests cover controls, resets, state propagation, and computed styles independently of the excluded screenshots.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2222] Persistence, validation, rollback, import, and save-result changes support reliable appearance settings. Tests, visual fixtures, translations, and the contrast-test timing fix support the feature and its verification. The summary does not establish an unrelated change.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused tests cover the appearance controls, save failures, rollback, timeouts, and state updates. Playwright snapshots cover the settings, appearance consumers, preview, and unanswered-save warning. Prior failure addressed: Commits 2f1ca53 and f51e825 add the dialog visual test and baselines. UnsavedChangesDialog.visual.tsx captures the warning-visible state in every theme, and SettingsView renders the same dialog component.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path was found that leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses approval or allowlist controls. The host validates changed appearance values in webviewMessageHandler.ts and appearanceSettingWrites.ts. The UI clamps values before applying CSS variables.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Two partial-write paths remain unsafe. - appearanceSettingWrites.ts:406-412 discards the stored and failed key lists. If API.setConfiguration stores terminalFontSize but another setting fails, the API throws only the other setting’s error. The caller cannot identify the committed appearance value. The previous ContextProxy.setValues path reported committed keys. - SettingsView.tsx:325-343 detects a partial import by comparing consecutive live states. If an unmarked state push shows an imported soundEnabled value before the marked refresh, the form retains its old value. A later save sends that old value (SettingsView.tsx:543) and overwrites the imported value. The new import report includes successful non-appearance writes, and the marked refresh addresses the ordinary partial-import case. The API reporting and overlapping-state case remain unresolved.
Resolution
Return all committed and failed keys from API.setConfiguration, or roll back the whole write. Send the actual imported keys with the partial-import refresh and reconcile those keys in the form without discarding unrelated edits.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A stalled keptRollback can retain one promise callback per canceled or timed-out retry. In appearanceSettingWrites.ts:375-395, a failed save can start a rollback that never settles. Unlike a deferred rollback, it does not mark the key stale. Later writes queue behind it; giveUpBeforeStarting removes owner bookkeeping but cannot detach the prior.then callback at lines 183-187 and 214-217. Repeated retries therefore accumulate callbacks on the unresolved rollback promise, including after provider disposal. The changed updateSettings handler can trigger this after a later setting fails and an earlier appearance value requires rollback. Commit d51a5814 addresses the prior failure's deferred-rollback case: it keeps that key stale until rollback completes and removes canceled writes from owner bookkeeping. The separate keptRollback path remains vulnerable.
Resolution
Protect stalled keptRollback operations from further writes, or use a queue that can detach canceled waiters from unresolved predecessors. Add coverage for repeated retries and provider disposal while a keptRollback is stalled.

### When a UI change needs a snapshot
If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. ## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)
- When a regression can be proven with a component or webview integration test, keep it in `webview-ui`. Do not promote it to e2e just because the UI is hosted inside VS Code.
[warning] 36-36: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders. Prefer deriving or initializing the value before render. If the effect must read a browser API after mount, treat this as advisory or suppress it with // react-doctor-disable-next-line react-hooks-js/set-state-in-effect.
Effects are intended to synchronize state between React and external systems such as manually updating the DOM, state management libraries, or other platform APIs. In general, the body of an effect should do one or both of the following:
Update external systems with the latest state from React.
Subscribe for updates from some external system, calling setState in a callback function when external state changes.

Persistence integrity:updateSettings is now all-or-nothing. Each key is snapshotted before it is written. If any write fails, the earlier ones are restored, the user is shown an error, and the webview gets a settingsSaveResult. SettingsView keeps the edits and the unsaved flag until the host confirms, and only then sends the API configuration, telemetry and debug settings. There is a new errors.settings_save_failed string in all 18 locales.
Tests:SettingsView saves all four appearance values and persists null for each after Reset. ExtensionStateContext hydrates and updates the values, treats null as unset, and applies or removes the CSS variables. There are also all-or-nothing tests in webviewMessageHandler.spec and a SettingsView.saveResult spec.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### Authoring rules
- Keep behavioral assertions in Vitest. A `*.visual.tsx` test should establish a deterministic state and make a focused screenshot assertion.
The webview-visual failure was the welcome high-contrast-light border check again (rgba(33, 88, 142, 0.498): a colour read half-way through its theme transition). expectContrast now waits for the CSS transitions to end before it measures, which fixes the flake at its source instead of rerunning. Two new tests cover the helper: a border that transitions to black is measured as black (without the wait it fails with 1.49:1), and a colour that settles on too little contrast still fails.
The Codecov partials: tests for the posting methods' branches (already disposed, disposed after the build returned, a build failure that is not a disposal is passed on) and for the prompt update of a provider disposed while its state is built. Removing each of those branches fails a test.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.
[warning] 40-40: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders.
[warning] 467-467: JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(x)) deep-clones by re-serializing: it is slow on large objects and silently drops undefined, functions, Date/Map/Set, and cyclic references. Use structuredClone(x).
Replace JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(value)) with structuredClone(value). It is faster and preserves Dates, Maps, Sets, and cyclic references.
[warning] 317-317: This side-effecting call runs inside a state updater, which React may invoke more than once. Move it outside the setter after computing the next state.
React may replay a state updater, so callbacks, analytics, and persistence inside it can run more than once. Compute state purely, then perform the side effect outside the setter.

Omit chatFontSize when the form has not edited it.
If the cached chat font is invalid and another writer replaces it with a valid value, an unrelated save sends the stale value. The host rejects the updateSettings payload, but the form clears its dirty flag and receives no correlated failure. Track chat-font edits so the payload omits an unedited value while still sending explicit changes and resets.

Regression Evidence.AppearanceToolRows.visual.tsx now runs in all four themes and takes a screenshot of the unset state, of the 150% state, and of the unset state again after the scale is removed (which must equal the first). The 150% and unset pictures of each theme are committed (8 baselines, from the Linux CI artifact; I looked at them), and the computed-size assertions are kept.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup.
timedOutSaves: an entry now has an expiry timer (TIMED_OUT_SAVE_KEEP_MS, 10 minutes: its late answer is then ignored and the "may still complete" warning goes away), the map is capped (MAX_TIMED_OUT_SAVES, 10, the oldest is dropped), and closing the view clears every timer and the map. Tests cover each (removing the bound, the expiry or the cleanup fails one).
Imports: importSettingsWithFeedback now passes the provider as the owner of the import writes, through importSettings, importSettingsFromFile and importSettingsFromPath into setValuesThroughWriteChain, so disposing the provider detaches onDeferredSettled (and refuses its writes) as it does for saves. A test disposes the provider before the late store lands: the value is still put back, and the provider is not called back (for a file path and for the dialog).
Out of Scope Changes (playwright/contrast.ts, AccessibilityContrast.visual.tsx). These are a fix for a CI failure this PR kept hitting, not a feature: the webview-visual job failed on the welcome screen's high-contrast-light border check (rgba(33, 88, 142, 0.498), a colour read half-way through its theme transition; failing run https://github.com/Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code/actions/runs/42094139876, job 127480157712). The check reads computed colours right after a theme is applied, and this PR's changes to the appearance consumers made it likely to land mid-transition. expectContrast now waits for CSS transitions to end first; the two tests in AccessibilityContrast.visual.tsx cover that (a border transitioning to black is measured as black, a settled pale border still fails). If the maintainers prefer it, it can be moved to its own PR.
Persistence Integrity (an import that fails part of the way). Fixed in 9df9675c6:
writeValuesThroughWriteChain is setValuesThroughWriteChain for a caller that tells its user what happened: it reports the first failure, the appearance settings that were stored (final) and those that were not (put back), with the other settings counted as one group. setValuesThroughWriteChain is built on it and still rejects with the original error, so the extension API and ClineProvider.setValues keep their contract.
The import uses the report: a write that failed on its own, with nothing else stored, is reported as it was; otherwise the error says … (not stored: a, b; stored: c), with the original error as its cause.
importSettingsWithFeedback now refreshes the webview when an import fails, so it shows what is stored and not what it had before; a refresh that fails does not hide the answer.
Tests: the messages for one, several, and mixed (other settings plus appearance) failures, the report itself, the original error from the throwing wrapper, and the refresh with and without a failing refresh. Reverting each piece fails a test (checked).
I did not roll back the whole import: the appearance values that were stored are final by design of the write chain (a later save may already have built on them), and the rest of the import is not transactional either (profiles and modes are written before the settings). Reporting what was stored, and refreshing, is what this change does.
Mutation gate (575 webview lines against a limit of 500). I cannot split this PR further without separating features that depend on each other (the save acknowledgement, the appearance controls and the consumers that read their variables), so mutation-diff stays red for a maintainer to waive or to approve a narrower scope.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.

[WARNING] 56-76: dangerouslySetInnerHTML with dynamic content can lead to XSS. Sanitize the input with a library like DOMPurify before rendering.
[warning] 40-40: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders.
[warning] 9-9: This component misses React Compiler's automatic memoization & re-renders more than it should: This value cannot be modified. Rewrite the flagged code so the compiler can optimize it.
Modifying component props or hook arguments is not allowed. Consider using a local variable instead.
[warning] 467-467: JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(x)) deep-clones by re-serializing: it is slow on large objects and silently drops undefined, functions, Date/Map/Set, and cyclic references. Use structuredClone(x).
Replace JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(value)) with structuredClone(value). It is faster and preserves Dates, Maps, Sets, and cyclic references.
[warning] 340-340: This side-effecting call runs inside a state updater, which React may invoke more than once. Move it outside the setter after computing the next state.
React may replay a state updater, so callbacks, analytics, and persistence inside it can run more than once. Compute state purely, then perform the side effect outside the setter.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a Playwright component snapshot of the unsaved-changes dialog with the
unanswered-save warning visible.
- Persistence Integrity:
Refresh the settings form after a partial import without losing unsaved edits.
Report all committed and failed keys for imports and API writes, including
non-appearance and appearance settings, or roll back the whole operation.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Keep the key protected until the deferred rollback settles. Remove timed-out or
cancelled queued writes from owner bookkeeping and the unresolved queue without
waiting for preceding writes. Add coverage for a stalled rollback, repeated
retries, and provider disposal.

## ESLint Suppressions
### Typed test files
New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:
- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.

## Persisted Setting Checklist
- [ ] Update `cachedState` from the control and include the setting in the `updateSettings` payload sent by `SettingsView.handleSubmit()` (or document and test a deliberate immediate-save flow).

[warning] 9-9: This component misses React Compiler's automatic memoization & re-renders more than it should: This value cannot be modified. Rewrite the flagged code so the compiler can optimize it.
Modifying component props or hook arguments is not allowed. Consider using a local variable instead.
[warning] 40-40: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders.
The write report now names every setting, not only the appearance ones: when the store says which of the other settings failed (SettingsWriteError) they are listed by name, stored and not stored, and the message says … (not stored: a, b; stored: c, d) (none when nothing was stored). A store that does not say is reported as a group, as before. setValuesThroughWriteChain (the extension API, ClineProvider.setValues) still rejects with the original error, which for the other settings is the SettingsWriteError that already carries both lists.
The settings form is refreshed after a failed import without losing unsaved edits: the state posted after it carries settingsImportRefreshedAt (set only while that post is built, so it is on no other state), and SettingsView takes the values that changed with it and leaves every other value, with its edit, as the user has it. After an import that succeeded nothing changes: settingsImportedAt still replaces the form. Tests: the provider includes the mark when set and leaves it out when unset, the import sets and clears it around the post (and not for a successful import), and six form cases (takes the stored value and keeps an edit to another setting, replaces an edit made to a value that was stored, leaves a value that did not change, ignores an unmarked state, acts on each mark once, acts on a later mark). I did not roll the whole import back: the stored appearance values are final by design of the write chain, and the rest of the import is not transactional.
Regression Evidence (the unanswered-save warning). The unsaved-changes dialog is now its own component (UnsavedChangesDialog, used by SettingsView) with a Playwright story and test: it is shot with and without the warning, in all four themes, and the text is asserted too (8 baselines from the Linux CI artifact; I looked at them).
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup (a stalled deferred rollback).
A deferred rollback now keeps the key taken until it is over (the key holds a count, so the store that timed out and the rollback behind it each hold it), so while a rollback stalls every new write of that key is refused at once and nothing queues behind it.
A write that gave up before it started leaves the provider's bookkeeping, and the key's queue, at once, not when the writes before it are over.
Tests: a stalled store and a stalled rollback with repeated attempts (refused, bookkeeping constant, key free again afterwards), and a write queued behind a hung store that times out (no longer waiting). Each piece reverted fails a test.

Do not mark failures that occur before import changes.
If a save refresh fails and no later state reaches the form, the live appearance value can be stale. Cancelling an import then posts a marked refresh, which can replace a newer unsaved edit with the stored value.
Set the marker only when the import may have changed settings. Keep it for failures after import side effects begin.

Reword the repeated "部分" in the settings_save_failed message.
The second sentence uses "部分" twice ("部分设置可能仍处于部分更改的状态"). The repetition is unclear. The English source is "Some may be left partly changed". Use "部分" once. This is the same wording defect that was fixed in the Indonesian locale.

Ignore Enter and arrow keys during IME composition.
The onKeyDown handler calls commitTyped() on Enter without checking for composition. For CJK users, the Enter key that confirms a composition triggers a commit. During composition, onChange strips non-ASCII digits, so draft can be "" or partial. The commit then reverts the box or stores a premature value. Return early when e.nativeEvent.isComposing is true.

Discard reverts appearance values to a stale live state and ignores appearanceSaved.
onConfirmDialogResult(true) calls setCachedState(extensionState) on line 764. appearanceSaved exists because the host can report a successful save even when its state refresh fails. In that case extensionState still holds the value from before the save. The failure needs three steps:
A save stores terminalFontSize: 13, and its state refresh fails. Live state stays unset, which shows as 12.
The user edits another setting, then leaves and confirms Discard.
The form resets terminalFontSize to the stale live value of 12.
Line 765 clears editedAppearance, so the form treats the value as unedited. The form then shows 12 while 13 is stored. The next save does not send the key, so the form stays wrong until a later state push. onLateResult already handles this case for the late-success path, so the immediate-success path does not match it.
Apply the saved appearance values over the live state when discarding.

Restore the root styles when the effect unmounts.
This effect writes --zoo-* variables and the zoo-editor-font-set class on document.documentElement. Nothing removes them when the provider unmounts. The new tests already clear these values by hand in beforeEach and afterEach, which shows the leak. A cleanup also resets the root between Playwright story mounts. Return a cleanup that clears the overrides. React runs it before each re-run and again on unmount.
Based on learnings: when a useEffect mutates global state that should last only while the effect is active, return a cleanup that restores the prior state.

updateSettingsmessage. Reset values are sent asnullso that they clear the stored value.ui.appearancestrings are added.Save pipeline changes
The "Persistence Integrity" check reported that the four appearance values are saved in a loop that can stop half way. A failed write left some values stored and the rest not, and the webview could not tell. The changes below fix that, and nothing else about how settings are applied. The API configuration, telemetry, and debug messages are sent immediately, exactly as before, and every side effect of a setting runs in the same place as before.
webviewMessageHandler.ts,updateSettings: the four appearance values (interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, spacingScale) are saved all-or-nothing. The result is posted assettingsSaveResult(success or the error), also when the state refresh fails, and the refresh runs after the values were put back.nullfor a reset), before any side effect runs or any setting is stored. An invalid value changes nothing, not even the valid settings sent with it. The save fails with an error and the webview is told. The webview is not trusted: the stepper's limits do not bind a message that was written by hand. Other settings are not checked, as before.SettingsView.tsx: only a save that changes an appearance value waits for the host's answer.
