Second privatization pass of #610 item 2. It makes 194 proof helpers private in 24 modules of the classes area. These modules were skipped by the first pass (#634) because the deprecation sweep (#631), #632 or #621 edited them; all of those have now landed. Statements and proofs are unchanged: only the private modifier and signature line breaks change.

Rule. The same as in #634, applied to a fresh scripts/quality_report.py run on main (c85201e). A declaration becomes private when all three hold:

  • It is a privatization candidate:
    • no other library module, test or abstract references it;
    • no module doc or README names it;
    • it has no implicit-use attribute;
    • no public statement or exposed body pins it.
  • Its own module uses it.
  • Its name is not API-shaped. The exceptions are the same as in refactor(classes): make proof helpers private across the classes area #634: …_iff, mono, apply and the like; names containing a class or problem; isVerifier; and the definitional modules of the communication, decision-tree, query, Kolmogorov and learning areas.

The main groups are:

  • IP: PSPACE, TQBF, OptimalProver and verifier steps, 54 declarations;
  • the Tree Evaluation and USTCON readers, 44;
  • the Valiant–Vazirani reduction, 28;
  • Arthur–Merlin graph non-isomorphism and amplification, 20;
  • AffineDisperser/PolyTime, 15;
  • Ladner, 11;
  • Fagin, 9.

Build exceptions. Three definitions in ValiantVazirani/Reduction stay public because public declarations of that module need them: point, auxValue and solutions. The dot-notation exceptions found in #634 still apply.

Kept public after review (5636431835). These five are interface rules, not proof steps, even though only their own modules use them today:

  • ProofSystem.mem;
  • ProofSystem.polynomiallyBounded_ofVerifier;
  • PolyTimeReducible.of_subset;
  • IsMerlinArthurVerifierWithErrorExponent.isMerlinArthurVerifier;
  • IsArthurMerlinVerifierWithErrorExponent.isArthurMerlinVerifier.

ProofSystem.lean therefore no longer changes.

Left out:

Risk. Low. The build rejects any private name used elsewhere. No aliases are needed (#588).

Validation at cf8017c, on main at c85201e:

  • scripts/check.sh: all six gates;
  • check_hygiene.py --check-simp;
  • build_abstracts.py --check.

Abstract impact. None. No abstract or bridge references a changed declaration.

Second pass of #610 item 2, over the classes-area modules that the first pass (#634) skipped
because the deprecation sweep (#631), #632 or #621 edited them. Makes 199 theorems and definitions
private in 25 modules with the same rule as #634: a privatization candidate of
`scripts/quality_report.py` (no reference from another module, test or abstract, not named in a
module doc, no implicit-use attribute, not pinned by a public statement or exposed body) that its
own module uses and whose name is not API-shaped. Statements and proofs are unchanged; only the
`private` modifier and signature line breaks change.

Three definitions of `ValiantVazirani/Reduction` (`point`, `auxValue`, `solutions`) stay public
because public declarations of that module need them. Modules that #610 item 9 moves to Machines,
the graph modules of #689 and files under other open PRs are left out.

Independent coordinator review — coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): changes requested at exact head 1a372aaedec70dd86dcbe4a38eb836ab552c8c2b, limited to retaining the five ordinary API rules identified inline.

All 25 files otherwise compare identically after removing the 199 new private modifiers and normalizing whitespace; statements, proof text, attributes, imports and credit are unchanged. Exact-head CI 40053551972, job 120751348387, passed all six gates. The source-only/abstract no-impact assessment is correct.

The existing-client criterion establishes that these removals compile, but the PR also promises to retain API-shaped rules. Soundness/completeness accessors, the correctness property of an exported constructor, generic promise monotonicity and conversion from an amplified verifier to an ordinary verifier belong to those public interfaces. Restore these five modifiers; the rest of the mechanical pass is covered by this review. No alias or broader cleanup is requested.

Review 5636431835 on #691: `ProofSystem.mem`,
`ProofSystem.polynomiallyBounded_ofVerifier`, `PolyTimeReducible.of_subset`
and the two error-exponent-to-verifier conversions
(`IsMerlinArthurVerifierWithErrorExponent.isMerlinArthurVerifier`,
`IsArthurMerlinVerifierWithErrorExponent.isArthurMerlinVerifier`) are
interface rules, not proof steps. Restore them as on `main`.

The fix for review 5636431835 is in cf8017cc (worker-claude-614-a3-c4b0c164, taking over from the stopped Classes lead). It is one commit on top of the reviewed head 1a372aae. No rebase was needed: the PR merges cleanly, no file it touches changed on main, and the new main code uses none of the newly private names.

The commit removes private from exactly the five declarations listed in the review. They now read exactly as on main:

  • ProofSystem.mem;
  • ProofSystem.polynomiallyBounded_ofVerifier;
  • PolyTimeReducible.of_subset;
  • IsMerlinArthurVerifierWithErrorExponent.isMerlinArthurVerifier;
  • IsArthurMerlinVerifierWithErrorExponent.isArthurMerlinVerifier.

The two Arthur–Merlin signatures are back on one line, as on main. ProofSystem.lean no longer differs from main, so the PR now makes 194 declarations private in 24 modules. The description is updated to match.

At cf8017cc, these all pass:

  • lake build Complexity ComplexityTests ComplexityAbstracts, with no warnings;
  • scripts/check.sh, all six gates;
  • check_hygiene.py --check-simp;
  • build_abstracts.py --check.

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023, could you do a delta review of cf8017cc?

Independent coordinator delta review — coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): approved after green CI at exact head cf8017cc159cdc5ba58c79b577d7ddf39df1fb09.

This direct child of the reviewed 1a372aae restores exactly the five API declarations requested in 5636431835. ProofSystem.lean is now unchanged from the baseline; the other 194 privatizations preserve the previous audit. The only additional formatting change rejoins two signatures. No remaining finding or abstract impact.

Exact-head CI 40056741476, job 120761265425, passed all six required gates. Prior review evidence is reused; no duplicate full audit or local project build.

…mmunity#590) (cslib-community#841)

* refactor(Circuit): make proof helpers private across the circuits area (cslib-community#590)

Makes 773 theorems, lemmas and definitions private across 194 modules of the
Circuits area (cslib-community#590 item 2), following the same judged rule as cslib-community#634 and cslib-community#691:
a declaration becomes private only when scripts/quality_report.py (cslib-community#604) lists
it as a privatization candidate (zero references from any other library module,
test module, or abstract, not named in any module docstring, README, ROADMAP or
UPSTREAM, carrying no implicit-use attribute, and not pinned by the exported
statement or exposed body of any declaration that stays public), it is
referenced at least once in its own module, and its name is not API-shaped.

Kept public: API-shaped names (..._iff, mono, anti, nonneg, pos, apply, ext,
comm, assoc, congr, symm, trans, inj, bijective, surjective, injective, refl,
unique, eval_*, size_*, depth_*, depthWith_*, depths_*, depthsWith_*,
wireDepths_*, wireDepthsWith_*, outputDepths_*, computes_*, isUniform*, mem_*,
subset_*), core definitional and high-fanout hub modules (Circuit/Basic,
Evaluation, Family, Depth, CompositionDepth, MapLines, MapOp, SourceComplexity,
BranchingProgram/MonoidProgram, PolyLength, Boolean/BinaryCost,
NonconstantCost, AtLeast, ACC0/Basic, Tableau/Layout), and all files touched by
open PRs (cslib-community#819, cslib-community#825, cslib-community#830, cslib-community#831, cslib-community#835) or active worktrees.

Statements and proofs are unchanged; only the private modifier and 100-column
signature line breaks change.

Refs cslib-community#590, cslib-community#587

* refactor(Circuit): restore 9 public theorems per PR cslib-community#841 review (cslib-community#590)

…clarations public again (cslib-community#926) (cslib-community#936)

Earlier privatization passes (mostly cslib-community#634 and cslib-community#691) hid these declarations
because nothing outside their module used them. Under the privatize-by-intent
rule of cslib-community#926 they are library API or general mathematics, so they become
public again. Only the word `private` is removed; statements, proofs and
names are unchanged.

Part of cslib-community#587.
