feat(editor): route the diff-view save through the guard (U8, #1375) - #1916
This PR routes the interactive editor's save flows - the diff view's saveChanges and saveDirectly - through the guard, and fixes the ordering between a save and a teardown so a cancellation can never resurrect rolled-back content: when a teardown begins while a guarded publish is in flight, the rollback waits for the publish to settle and is provably the last writer; open() serializes with the previous session's finalization so a new edit session cannot start underneath an old cleanup.
The diff view is the highest-traffic write path in the extension. This is the eighth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).
Related GitHub Issue
Tracking: issue 2023 (this unit's tracking issue; deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the series lands).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking), #1375 (epic).
Description
What this PR changes:
saveChanges publishes through guardedWrite and registers the in-flight publish; a teardown that begins during the publish is honored after the publish settles (the save reports no completed edit rather than claiming one).
revertChanges claims the cancellation first, then waits for the in-flight guarded publish before rolling back - the rollback is provably the last writer (verified with a barrier test).
open() waits for a prior session's finalization or teardown before starting the new session, and the cancellation claim is cleared with the teardown marker on a clean start.
saveDirectly forwards a caller-supplied completeness flag through the direct publish, so a tool-level write can state whether the destination was fully observed.
Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content (guarded-write core, observation registry, atomic publish, lock key), which the GitHub diff shows as context. This unit's own delta is 486 lines.
Review focus:src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts (saveChanges, revertChanges, open) and the new tests in src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts and src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts.

Scope is one gate scope and matches the unit.
No .changeset or CHANGELOG changes (AGENTS.md).
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged - no suppression count increased.
New code lints clean (--max-warnings=0) rather than relying on suppressions.
Tests added at the lowest layer that would have caught each finding.
Visual Snapshot item considered: not applicable (no rendered surface).
Visual Snapshots
Not applicable - no rendered surface change; the diff view looks identical.
Videos (interaction / animation only)
Not applicable.
Documentation Updates
No user-facing documentation change: no new setting, no new surface, no model-facing text. No .changeset and no CHANGELOG edit (AGENTS.md).
Additional Notes
Budget: own delta 486 lines / inside the caps. The mutation gate reports the GitHub diff's changed-line count (1218 against the 500 cap at the previous head) because the unlanded predecessors inflate it; the row clears on rebase after the predecessors merge.
Concurrency tests were red-first verified against the pre-fix code (each failed with exactly the signature its review row describes), and four negative controls (dropping the rollback wait, the claim check, the completeness override, and the forwarding) each reddened exactly their test; all restores byte-identical.
DiffViewProvider spec: 159 passed, 2 failed - both failures are donor-junction artifacts of the local harness (DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS resolves from a stale junctioned dist; CI test and compile are green at this head). guardedWrite spec: 63 passed.
Red-first + negative controls as described above; ESLint (the CI command, full src) exit 0; Prettier clean; suppressions unchanged.
CI: the push at this head fixes the lint-budget red at the previous head (nine as any casts in the new test exceeded the file's suppressed count; replaced with bracket notation and documented double casts, violation count back to the suppressed baseline).
Updated this round
Pushed fe6ff685d -> 36e3f86b: fixes the open CodeRabbit Major (save-lifecycle race at DiffViewProvider.ts:1096). The publish gate released when guardedWrite() settled, but a rejected save keeps working the same bytes and tabs afterwards: the adoption probe reads the disk and the discard cleanup reloads the buffer and closes the session's views. The whole rejected-save decision is now one registered pass (rejectedSaveCleanupInFlight) that revertChanges() waits on, and the discard cleanup records rejectedSaveCleanupHandled so a cancellation arriving after it finalizes the session without applying or saving originalContent (adoption-success rejections keep rollback-last). Regression tests: cancellation during the probe waits for the decision and keeps the rollback last; cancellation after the cleanup skips the rollback and finalizes exactly once. Negative controls: removing the gate await reddens only the probe test; removing the handled-session check reddens only the skip test.
Per AGENTS.md the two Stryker directives in DiffViewProvider.ts were removed with this touch. Equivalence notes for the mutation gate: (1) the writeKind default "update" - an empty kind dispatches exactly like "update" in guardedWrite (only "edit" and "create" branch distinctly); the default line itself is unchanged, so no mutant enters the changed-line selector. (2) the saveTask && operand in the adoption condition - GuardRejectedError is only thrown by guardedWrite, which is reached only after the !saveTask check has thrown a plain Error, so whenever the operand is evaluated saveTask is provably non-null; the moved condition lines are killed by the existing adoption-rejection tests (non-guard failure with matching disk, dirty buffer with matching disk, external-writer match).
Earlier round: 6485f0636 -> fe6ff685d lint-budget fix for the spec casts (no behavior change); description rewritten for human reviewers and linked to issue 2023.
Get in Touch
Reviewer and maintainer questions are welcome as comments on this PR or on #1991.
Typed tests - the moved diagnostic/scroll blocks use bracket
notation for private members and documented structural doubles
(as unknown as vscode.TextEditor / TextDocument); the spec's no-explicit-any suppression count drops 310 -> 285, no additions.
Report counting - the seed-descriptor "reported once" test now
counts matching console.error calls (exactly 1); the weaker second toHaveBeenCalledWith and the stale "failed backup" comment are gone.
Negative control: a duplicated report reddens exactly this test.
Symlink backup (security) - with publishOverLink the backup step
now lstats the target and takes no content backup for a symbolic
link: no referent bytes are copied, nothing is renamed back over the
link, and no copy is left beside it. Two regression tests (link: no
backup, commit lands; regular file: backup kept and cleaned).
Negative controls: guard disabled / !== true each redden exactly the
link test; dropping the lstat operand reddens exactly the
regular-file test.
Equivalent mutant (no suppression, per AGENTS.md): dropping the publishOverLink operand of the guard is equivalent, because without publishOverLink the publish target is dereferenced by resolvePublishTarget and can never be a symbolic link - the lstat
then always reports a non-link.
Re-review follow-up: a captured-DACL publish whose target is a symbolic
link (publishOverLink + lstat symlink + daclDumpPath set) is now
refused BEFORE the commit rename with a new DaclPublishRefusedError
(exported with the DaclCaptureError/DaclRestoreError family, same
shape): the rename would replace the link itself and the DACL restore
would apply the saved ACEs to the wrong object. The error states the
target is unchanged; neither /restore nor the restrictive fallback
runs. DaclCaptureError does not fit (capture succeeded); DaclRestoreError does not (no rollback occurred).
Regression test + negative controls: refusal removed -> exactly the new
test reddens; refusal unconditional -> exactly the no-DACL linux
symlink test reddens (that path still publishes with no backup).
The refusal also updates safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts (f23e49f):
its two unscoped symlink publishes previously pinned the old win32
publish-over-link-with-ACL behavior; they now branch on process.platform (win32: DaclPublishRefusedError, locks still
serialized, /save only, link bytes untouched; linux: original
assertions unchanged).
Scope registration: the safeWriteJson carrier on this unit
The confinement, symlink lock-selection and platform-DACL expectations
in src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts and its tests are deliberate on this
unit, not scope drift. The guarded-write chain's unit map - tracking
issue 1991 - assigns this carrier here: its section "Port source:
folding a lock key the way the lock is placed (owed on U8, PR 1916)"
records the lock-key folding derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit 5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), including the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test; and the ownership ruling in the same
issue keeps primitive-level ports on the unit whose branch carries
that version of the primitive ("Inherited by any unit whose branch
carries this version of the primitive - U1 and U8 among them").
Removing the carrier from this PR would strand the port the tracking
issue owes on U8.
1. Out of Scope - sharpened pre-emption. The proposed resolution
("move the safeWriteJson changes to the file-safety unit") would
break the owed-port chain, not restore scope: the safeWriteJson
lock-key folding ON THIS BRANCH IS the port - tracking issue 1991,
section "Port source: folding a lock key the way the lock is placed
(owed on U8, PR 1916)", records it derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit 5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), with the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test tracked there. The file-safety unit
(U5, PR 1914) is the port SOURCE and merges before this unit in the
declared order; moving this carrier out of U8 strands the port the
tracking issue owes on U8 and deletes the derivation record's target.
Scope is deliberate per the unit map; no move.
2. Security Boundaries - standing TOCTOU window, registered. The
resolve/lock/version-check alias race in replaceIfVersion is the
standing confinement-primitive window, not a defect introduced here:
the check and the publish already run inside ONE acquisition of the
shared advisory lock keyed by resolveLockKey (a symlink alias and
its referent share one lock), and the primitive's docstring states the
atomicity boundary and the no-lock writer explicitly. Closing the
resolve-to-lock alias swap is the directory-identity pinning that is
U5's (PR 1914) content, which merges BEFORE this unit in the declared
order - the row resolves at merge time. Same family as the TOCTOU row
registered on PR 1918 (see record 6106959976 on 1408) and the
primitive-level ruling in tracking issue 1991.
3. Regression Evidence - fixed in c6b3e86. New spec core/task/__tests__/Task.observationRegistry.spec.ts constructs two
REAL Task instances (same construction path as Task.dispose.test.ts, startTask: false) and asserts both expose ObservationRegistry, are NOT the same object, and that an
observation recorded on one is absent from the other. Negative
control: swapping the field initializer for a module-shared registry
reddens exactly this test (1 failed | 13 passed across the two
registry specs). The existing unit spec is untouched. 14/14 green,
eslint/prettier/tsc clean.
4. Lifecycle warning - registered, HOLD family. The open()/reset() double-await race is the teardown-waiter family
recorded in tracking issue 1991, record 8 ("U9 teardown: the waiter
cannot tell whether the pass it waited for succeeded (PR 1917 / PR
1918 - fix once and port)"). The fix belongs to the U9 teardown
content and is owed there once; the carried copies on this unit
resolve at merge time in the declared order. Not a U8-level defect
per the same primitive-level ruling.
The sibling unit's Major finding (preview observation surviving on the
non-edit exit paths) applies identically to the DiffViewProvider copy
this unit owns, so the fix is ported here as well (this unit merges
first): open() records the token its preview wrote; performFinalReset() - the single execution point behind reset() -
forgets the entry while it still holds that token and the preview's
incomplete flag. Trigger-sequence test + two survival tests ported;
negative control: disabling the withdrawal reddens exactly the trigger
test. 166/166 green.
The withdrawal now tracks the exact entry object the preview wrote
({ path, entry } identity) instead of version+completeness: a model
partial read while the diff is open replaces the entry with a fresh
object at the same token and flag, and survives reset(). Regression
test + two NCs (each exactly one red). 167/167 green. Ported to the
sibling unit's identical copy (14f8634).
Re-review responses (error-fix re-review wave)
Publish token surfaced from guardedWrite (Major Data-Integrity): the
guard now resolves with the token it read back under its lock; saveChanges() records it as the rollback baseline and the comparison
prefers it over the create placeholder, so a session's own publish is never
mistaken for a peer write and a peer write is never silently overwritten.
New end-to-end spec case (real save -> peer stat change -> rollback
conflict); the two chain tests that pinned the old void contract now assert
the returned token.
Per-session baseline (Major Data-Integrity): open() and performFinalReset() clear the rollback baseline with the other session
fields; a reused provider cannot inherit the previous session's token and
report a false conflict. Two regression tests added.
Conflict path finalizes the session (Minor Stability): a rejected
rollback restores the evicted preview tabs and claims the finalization
before the conflict propagates; the peer-publish test now asserts the
session is finalized after the rejection.
Rollback publishes through a version-bound compare-and-swap (4e4cf7f)
The Persistence Integrity row: the existing-file rollback checked the
disk token and then applied the buffer through VS Code's save path - the
check was not bound to the publish, so a peer write landing after the
check was silently overwritten by originalContent. The rollback now
publishes the original bytes through replaceIfVersion: the version
check and the publish happen inside one acquisition of the shared
advisory lock, with lastWrittenToken as the expected version. A CAS
rejection preserves the peer's bytes and raises RollbackConflictError
naming the disk token it found; on success the buffer is reconciled by
reverting onto the published bytes instead of saving over them. Where
either side of the comparison is missing (never published, or no disk
version evidence) there is nothing to bind the publish to and the save
fallback remains, documented as such.
The create branch no longer saves the dirty diff buffer before the
delete - that save published the cancelled edit's content to disk for a
moment, unbound to the placeholder check - and unlinks only after the
placeholder identity/token check inside the lock.
Tests: the barrier test pauses the rollback's version read, lands a peer
publish inside the pause, and verifies the publish rejects with the
peer's bytes intact and the buffer untouched; a new test pins that the
create rollback deletes without saving first. Negative controls:
replacing the CAS with an unguarded publish reddens exactly the four
tests that pin the rejection contract; removing the buffer reconcile and
re-adding the pre-delete save each redden exactly one test. 174/174
green at this head.
The 05:51Z Persistence Integrity row implemented in full: every existing-file rollback publishes the original bytes through the atomic compare-and-swap; when the session baseline or the current disk version is unavailable the rollback preserves the disk state and raises RollbackConflictError instead of saving (the unguarded updatedDocument.save() fallback is removed); the create rollback unlinks only on a proven token match under the file lock - unknown ownership (identity-only or failed stat-bracketed open) or a mismatch preserves the path and the created directories and reports the conflict. The buffer is reconciled by reverting onto the CAS-published bytes. Tests: missing-baseline and missing-disk-evidence rollbacks, identity-only create peer replacement, plus the tab-close/ordering tests updated to the revert contract. 177/177 green; three negative controls pin the contract (evidence gate, create ownership, revert-vs-save).
The Security Boundaries alias row remains the registered ApplyDiffTool alias family (lands once at the publish-primitive owner; precedent record 6106959976, issue #1408).
Allowlist binding to the retained target (bf09481)
The 08:21Z Security Boundaries row implemented in full: replaceIfVersion and createIfAbsent take an authorizeTarget callback run under the lock on the RETAINED publish target before the version comparison and the publish; the guarded-write entry re-runs rooIgnoreController.validateAccess on the retained target, so a retargeted symlink or hard-link alias cannot receive approved bytes in an ignored/external file. Both identity locks (referent key + alias-entry key via resolveLinkPathLockKey) are taken in the shared sorted order when distinct. Tests: denial before version comparison, retained-target binding, end-to-end alias-passes/referent-ignored rejection, sorted dual-key acquisition, single-lock fold; four negative controls pin each element. 62/62 guardedWrite, 239/239 with the diff-view suites. The cited retained-target block exists only in this unit's copy; no U-family port applies.
The Regression Evidence row (safeWriteJson multi-lock cleanup test) remains carrier content: the test belongs to the safeWriteJson owner unit (scope registration above).

The description is comprehensive and covers the change, rationale, review focus, test procedure, verification results, checklist, documentation impact, and reviewer contact. It references tracking issues instead of using the template's exact “Closes” format, but the required issue context is present.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No explicit persistence-integrity failure is introduced. DiffViewProvider.saveChanges() and saveDirectly() await guardedWrite() (DiffViewProvider.ts:904, 2361). guardedWrite performs version checks and publication under shared locks (guardedWrite.ts:399-447). safeWriteText stages content, renames atomically, fsyncs the parent directory, and reports post-commit durability failures (safeWriteText.ts:909-975). Rollback uses the version-bound replaceIfVersion path (DiffViewProvider.ts:1420-1506). Completeness and write-kind arguments are propagated by the changed tool callers.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The standing containment bypass remains in changed code. guardedWrite.ts:591-595 rejects canonical escapes only for non-absolute inputs, and :613-621 checks the retained target only when the canonical alias is inside the canonical workspace. If task.cwd is /workspace, an absolute input /workspace/link.txt points through a symlink to /outside/secret.txt; the absolute-path condition is skipped, the alias is canonicalized outside, and the retained-target check is skipped. RooIgnoreController.validateAccess() allows outside paths on errors and without matching ignore rules (RooIgnoreController.ts:89-115), so safeWriteText() can publish to the external target. The changed ApplyPatchTool.ts:107-112,218-228 path validates and then forwards the patch path to saveDirectly, which calls guardedWrite unchanged at DiffViewProvider.ts:2335,2361. The added test at guardedWrite.spec.ts:1342-1362 covers an alias already outside the workspace, not an absolute alias lexically inside the workspace.
Resolution
Treat an absolute input as workspace-scoped when its lexical path is inside task.cwd. Reject an in-workspace absolute alias whose canonical target is outside the canonical workspace, and require the retained publish target to remain inside that workspace. Alternatively, normalize in-workspace absolute inputs to relative paths before calling guardedWrite. Add a regression test with an absolute in-workspace symlink to an external file and assert that no publish occurs.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The standing regression-evidence failure remains unresolved. The PR changes enabled focus-disruption saves in ApplyPatchTool for add, move destination, and same-file update (src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts:216-228, 421-433, 452-464), EditFileTool for create/update (src/core/tools/EditFileTool.ts:438-451), SearchReplaceTool for update (src/core/tools/SearchReplaceTool.ts:209-223), and WriteToFileTool for create/update (src/core/tools/WriteToFileTool.ts:137-148). The focused specs were not changed. They configure the experiment as disabled and assert the legacy saveChanges path (editFileTool.spec.ts:113-141, searchReplaceTool.spec.ts:111-140, writeToFileTool.spec.ts:135-158); applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts covers only deletion. The added editTool.spec.ts test covers EditTool, not EditFileTool. No focused test asserts the changed saveDirectly write-kind and completeness arguments for these four call sites.
Resolution
Add lowest-layer enabled-path tests. In applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts, cover add, move destination, and same-file update, assert complete saveDirectly arguments with "create" or "update", and assert saveChanges is not called. In editFileTool.spec.ts, cover new and existing files. In searchReplaceTool.spec.ts, cover the existing-file update. In writeToFileTool.spec.ts, cover new and existing files. Enable the experiment, approve each operation, and assert the expected write kind and completeness flag.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed open lifecycle still leaks filesystem resources on pre-editor failures. runOpenTransition() calls createDirectoriesForFile() at DiffViewProvider.ts:360 and writes the placeholder at :364, but its cleanup catch starts only around openDiffEditor() at :447. If a later mkdir rejects after an earlier mkdir succeeds, createDirectoriesForFile() retains the partial list locally and createdDirs is never assigned. If placeholder fs.writeFile() rejects, the assigned directories also have no cleanup path. A caller can then call reset(); performFinalReset() only sets createdDirs = [] at :2273 and does not remove the directories. The focused tests cover failed diff-editor opening, but not directory-creation or placeholder-write failures.
Resolution
Wrap the full runOpenTransition() resource-owning section in failure cleanup. Track each directory immediately after its mkdir succeeds, including partial helper failure. On every pre-editor failure, dispose any acquired listeners and timers, remove only the provider-owned placeholder, remove provider-created directories in reverse order, restore provider state, and settle the session reservation. Add regression tests for rejected directory creation and rejected placeholder writes, and verify that reset() leaves no provider-owned filesystem resources.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, Windows DACL capture failure for an existing target rejects the write with DaclCaptureError before the commit rename, preserving the target's previous content and ACL. This supersedes the earlier learning that icacls /save failure permits publication. SafeWriteTextOptions.onWarning reports non-ENOENT access-check warnings and post-commit DACL recovery notices; it does not replace DaclCaptureError rejection.

Reuse resolveLinkPathLockKey from src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts. Do not substitute _resolveScopeRoot, which resolves the directory path itself. An unscoped write that replaces a symlink must preserve distinct lock keys for the symlink entry and its referent.

Auto Save adoption for an open()-created file (CR thread 6z1QlM, major). Hoisting
the never-read refusal above the placeholder branches (48bb73e) made it fire for
a session that owns its own file: open() creates the file, records the verified
empty placeholder as the baseline and leaves preOpenObservation null because there
was nothing to read. Auto Save then publishes the accepted bytes, the
compare-and-swap finds a moved token, and adoption was refused - so saveChanges()
reported a failure for a new file that already held the accepted content, and the
rejected-save cleanup cannot remove a nonempty placeholder. The refusal now
distinguishes an owned placeholder from an unread existing file, and the exception
is gated on the rejection the placeholder can actually explain: guardedWrite throws
the new GuardStaleVersionError (still a GuardRejectedError, same message) at the one
compare-and-swap site, and an "already exists and was not read" rejection - where
the bytes on disk are a peer's - keeps refusing.
- control: exception reverted -> 2 failed | 183 passed (185), the predicate pin and
the new create -> Auto Save -> accept scenario through saveChanges() both fail with
"expected false to be true"; reason gate dropped -> 1 failed | 184 passed on the
not-a-moved-token pin; both mutants reverted byte-identically and re-run 185/185.
Staging cleanup for direct safeWriteText callers (CR thread 6z1QlQ, minor).
validatedStagingIdentity is captured from a bigint lstat while the cleanup compared
it against a plain fs.lstat, and fs.lstat reports numbers unless bigint is asked for,
so the check disowned a staging file the write still owned and left it beside the
target whenever a caller-staged write failed before the commit rename. Ask for
{ bigint: true }.
- control: numeric lstat restored -> 1 failed | 97 passed (98), the unlink assertion
reports "Number of calls: 0", i.e. the staging file stays behind.
Containment for an aliased workspace with an absent target (panel Security
Boundaries). guardedWrite canonicalized task.cwd but fell back to the LEXICAL alias
whenever fs.realpath could not resolve the caller's path - which is every write that
creates its own file - so the alias compared outside its own canonical root, the
clause that binds a retained target never fired, and approved bytes could leave the
workspace. Fall back to the deepest-existing-ancestor walk resolvePublishTarget uses,
so the alias and the retained target are canonicalized alike.
- control: lexical fallback restored -> 1 failed | 73 passed (74), the new test
resolved instead of rejecting with "outside the workspace".
Gates (split-1833/u8, verified real node_modules): tsc --noEmit 0; eslint
--prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 clean with src/eslint-suppressions.json
unchanged from HEAD (the prune rewrote only line order and endings - 1451 changed
lines, identical sorted content, restored from HEAD); prettier --check clean;
DiffViewProvider.spec 185, guardedWrite.spec 74, safeWriteText.spec 98,
safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec + safeWriteJson.test 45 passed | 4 skipped, Task
dispose/observationRegistry/throttle 34, all green. Mutation coverage is still
absent: the branch is over the 500 changed-executable-line cap, so these fixes carry
negative controls and no local Stryker preflight ran.

Where
Security Boundaries (ERROR, 22:26 wording: canonicalized task.cwd but an absent target falls back to the unresolved alias)
Addressed. guardedWrite no longer falls back to the lexical alias: when fs.realpath cannot resolve the caller's path it walks to the deepest existing ancestor and re-joins the missing components - the same shape resolvePublishTarget uses - so the containment clause compares a canonical alias and the retained target against the canonical root. New test drives an aliased workspace root with an absent target and asserts the rejection.
src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts
Thread 6z1QlM (major: adoption lost for an open()-created file whose bytes moved under Auto Save)
Addressed, regression confirmed and fixed. The refusal now separates an owned placeholder (placeholderVersion set by open() from the verified empty file it wrote) from an unread existing file, and the exception is gated on the rejection reason: guardedWrite throws the new GuardStaleVersionError (a GuardRejectedError, same message) at the one compare-and-swap site, and an "already exists and was not read" rejection still refuses. Scenario added: create -> Auto Save -> accept through saveChanges(). Thread resolved with the control numbers.
Thread 6z1QlQ (minor: numeric fs.lstat in the staging-cleanup check)
Addressed. The cleanup asks for { bigint: true } so it compares against the same numeric base validatedStagingIdentity was captured from; test added with a real caller-staged file whose rename fails. Thread resolved with the control numbers.

Lifecycle (WARNING, unchanged wording: the session transition is not reserved before open()'s first await)
Not addressed in this head. Scheduled as its own round: reserve the transition in open() before its first await, make reset() join it, with a regression test that starts open() and reset() concurrently, plus its negative control.
-
Deliberate non-changes, unchanged by this head: safeWriteJson.ts:306 stays fail-loud (maintainer decision, recorded in-thread); DACL narrowing on the backup path is its own unit (needs a path-keyed icacls mock surface); the eight closeAllDiffViews() call sites stay until the closeOwnDiffView sweep round; the four remaining blind performFinalReset stubs stay scenario-local for the same reason reset() is stubbed at all.
Gates at f95c7b4f0 (verified-real node_modules in this worktree): tsc --noEmit 0; eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 clean with src/eslint-suppressions.json byte-identical to HEAD; prettier --check clean; DiffViewProvider.spec 185/185, guardedWrite.spec 74/74, safeWriteText.spec 98/98, safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec + safeWriteJson.test 45 passed | 4 skipped, Task dispose/observationRegistry/throttle 34/34.
Stated plainly, as before: items fixed here are covered by negative controls only - reverting each fix fails exactly the new tests (2 failed | 183 passed, 1 failed | 184 passed, 1 failed | 73 passed, 1 failed | 97 passed), and each mutant was reverted byte-identically before the green run. No local Stryker preflight ran: mutation-diff is already red on this branch from the 1685-changed-executable-line cap (limit 500), so the gate cannot cover this delta either way.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Security Boundaries:
For relative task paths, fail closed when the caller alias resolves outside the
canonical task workspace, instead of treating that alias as an already-approved
outside-workspace path. Canonicalize the workspace root, caller alias, and
retained target with the same deepest-existing-ancestor logic, and perform the
comparison under the write locks. Propagate non-ENOENT resolution failures
rather than falling back to a lexical path. Do not create directories before
this authorization; create them only for the authorized retained target. Add a
real-filesystem regression test with a symlinked task workspace, an external
symlinked child directory, and an absent target, and assert that no external
directory or file is created.
- Persistence Integrity:
Update every direct-save consumer to propagate the correct guard semantics. For
existing-file edits, record a stat-bracketed observation for the exact bytes
used to build the content, preserve its completeness, and pass an explicit
`writeKind` (`"edit"` for targeted edits or `"update"` for complete
replacements). Use `"create"` only for new-file creation. Add regression tests
for each direct-save path with an existing target and no prior model
observation.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Reserve the session transition synchronously before `open()` performs its first
await, and make `reset()` join that transition. Alternatively add
session-generation ownership so an old reset cannot clear or claim a newer
session. Add a regression test that starts `open()` with no lifecycle promise,
starts and blocks `reset()` during the initial await, lets `open()` install
listeners and schedule the timer, then verifies that the active session remains
valid and its reset disposes all resources.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's TypeScript src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, post-commit durability reconciliation belongs in the shared guardedWrite publication flow because DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly() bypasses saveChanges() error handling. createIfAbsent() and replaceIfVersion() collect the landed version token under the publication lock. guardedWrite() uses that token to refresh the task observation, preserves partial completeness for targeted edits, and rethrows the original PostCommitDurabilityError. Pre-commit failures and failed post-publish token reads must leave the previous observation unchanged.

## ESLint Suppressions
When writing new code:
- Avoid `as any`; use typed APIs directly (e.g. `RooCodeEventName.X` constants with typed `on()`/`listenerCount()`), or bracket notation (`obj["privateField"]`) to access private members. Prefer precise test doubles or `unknown` with a type guard over double assertions (`as unknown as T`); use double assertions only as a last resort, with a comment explaining why.

556-572: Containment is skipped for an existing alias that is a symlink to an outside target.
canonicalAlias is built from fs.realpath(absolutePath). If the alias is a workspace symlink to an existing outside file, canonicalAlias is the outside path. The clause at Line 579 then evaluates isInsideDirectory(canonicalWorkspaceRoot, canonicalAlias) as false, so the containment check is skipped. The retained target is checked only by .rooignore.
Any retarget that happens before this realpath call also goes undetected. The check cannot tell it apart from an alias that was always outside.
The new walk-up handles absent targets correctly. The existing-target case has the same root cause, and an earlier review comment already raised it. If the intent is to allow deliberate outside links, document that decision at Line 541. Otherwise, base the trigger on the lexical alias (isInsideDirectory(task.cwd, absolutePath)) and compare the retained target to canonicalWorkspaceRoot.

… bind a relative alias to the workspace
A create session whose pre-open snapshot was a partial read lost adoption (CR thread
4474468493, minor). f95c7b4 gated the create-placeholder exception inside the null
branch, so the completeness check still ran first for a session whose
preOpenObservation describes a file that was already gone: the model read a slice,
the file was removed, open() took the create path and replaced the registry entry
with the verified empty placeholder marked complete, Auto Save wrote the accepted
bytes, the guard rejected with GuardStaleVersionError (the completeness gate never
ran, because the registry holds the complete placeholder observation), and adoption
was refused - a failure reported for a new file that already held the accepted
bytes, with no cleanup able to unlink a file that is no longer the empty placeholder.
Ownership is now decided first: a session that owns its placeholder adopts iff the
rejection is the moved compare-and-swap token, and the refusals apply to the sessions
that do not own one. Same reason gate as before; two consequences, both fail-closed:
a create session whose rejection is not the moved token now refuses even for an edit
kind or with no snapshot at all, which previously fell through to adoption.
- control: previous head's ordering restored -> 2 failed | 184 passed (186), the two
failures being the new trigger test and its predicate pin, "expected false to be
true"; ownership branch ungated -> 2 failed | 184 passed on the two not-a-moved-token
pins, "expected true to be false". Both mutants reverted byte-identically.
- new tests: the thread's trigger through saveChanges() (partial read -> file removed
-> create -> Auto Save -> accept resolves, unlinks nothing, observation moves to the
version on disk) and the predicate pin for the same combination.
Containment for a relative alias that canonicalizes outside the workspace (panel
Security Boundaries, third wording). A different objection from the one f95c7b4
answered: that row was the lexical fallback when realpath failed; this one is that an
alias which canonicalizes OUTSIDE - the ordinary shape is a link directory inside the
workspace whose referent is elsewhere - is read by the containment clause as an
intentional outside-workspace write, because the clause only binds the retained target
when the alias looks inside. For a path the caller named relative to task.cwd that is
not an authorization: the spelling is workspace-scoped, so the alias's own containment
is now checked and fails closed, naming the reconstructed canonical path the model has
to re-read. An absolute caller path keeps its own authorization and still publishes to
an outside referent, which is what the tool layer approved.
- control: fail-closed check removed -> 1 failed | 77 passed (78), the escaping-alias
test resolves instead of rejecting ("promise resolved \"'v1'\" instead of
rejecting") - the bypass, reproduced; the reconstruction joined without reverse() ->
1 failed | 77 passed, the rejection named the components in the wrong order.
Coverage for multi-component ancestor reconstruction (CR thread 4474468483, trivial):
rejection when only the canonical workspace root resolves and a retained target sits
outside it, acceptance for a retained target under the reconstructed
canonicalRoot/sub/deeper/new-file.txt, and the outside-referent case above, which is
what actually pins the ordered re-join.

The prior containment bypass remains possible. In guardedWrite.ts:546-581, a relative alias such as child-link/new.txt under a symlinked task workspace is canonicalized to the external child-link …

相对 task path 的拼法本身就是 workspace-scoped 的授权,所以这条只绑 relative path:absolute caller path 的授权属于该 path 本身,referent 在外照旧 publish(新 case guardedWrite leaves an absolute alias that canonicalizes outside the workspace to its own authorization 就是钉这个分界;既有的 does not apply containment to an alias that is already outside the workspace 也仍然绿)。fail-closed 的拒绝讯息会印出重建后的 canonical path,因为那是模型必须 re-read 的路径。
新增 case:guardedWrite fails closed on a relative alias that canonicalizes outside the workspace(link 目录 child/ + 两个尚不存在的 component)。

Panel Persistence Integrity: the guarded persistence contract this branch introduces was
never propagated to the direct-save consumers. DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly() defaulted
writeKind to "create" and recorded no observation of its own, so a direct publish over an
existing file - SearchReplaceTool, EditTool, EditFileTool and WriteToFileTool over an
existing path, ApplyPatchTool's same-file update path - was refused as "already exists and
was not read", and only the callers that already named a kind kept working.
- saveDirectly brackets the basis read the consumer hands it: stat the target, compare its
bytes against the originalContent the content was built from, stat it again. All three
agreeing means the publish replaces content the consumer saw in full, so the observation
carries the bracket's token and may claim completeness; a target that no longer matches
the basis - or a bracket that could not be taken at all - records the current token as
incomplete, so a full-file replacement stays refused until the model re-reads. "create" is
left alone: an absent target needs no authorization, and a target that is already there
must still be refused rather than quietly overwritten.
- every direct-save call site now names its kind: "create" for an apply_patch Add and for a
move destination, "update" for a full-file replacement of a target the tool read, and the
isNewFile / fileExists branches in EditFileTool and WriteToFileTool. ApplyDiffTool's
targeted-diff call already carried "edit".
- new tests: the two bracket outcomes through saveDirectly (complete claim publishing,
incomplete claim refused by the completeness gate), and a focus-disruption pin in
editTool.spec asserting the kind the consumer passes. The remaining tools' direct paths
have no focus-disruption harness in their own specs, so their kind is stated in code and
comment but unpinned - that harness gap predates this change and is not papered over here.
- controls: bracketed observation call removed -> 3 failed | 185 passed (188), the two new
tests plus the direct-save refusal test that now reads the compare-and-swap miss
("expected [Function] to throw error matching /Stale version"); completeness claimed
without the bracket -> 1 failed | 187 passed, "expected [Function] to throw error matching
/only partially read/ but got 'Stale version...'"; EditTool's kind argument dropped ->
1 failed | 16 passed, "expected undefined to be 'update'". All three reverted
byte-identically and re-run green.
Gates (split-1833/u8, node_modules verified real): tsc --noEmit 0; eslint

…aits
Panel Lifecycle (Resource Cleanup warning): open() looked at the previous session's
finalization and teardown before its first await, but it never reserved the transition it
was about to make, so a reset() that arrived while open() was suspended could finalize
underneath a session that was still starting.
- open() now writes sessionStartInFlight synchronously, before its first await, and the
reservation settles only when the transition ends - at the end of open() or on the
openDiffEditor failure path - not when the previous session's cleanup settles. The claim
matters: an earlier shape that released the reservation as soon as the prior cleanup
finished still lost the race, because the fields that identify a session (editType,
isEditing, the preview observation, the editor listeners) are claimed across awaits.
- reset() joins that reservation before it claims a finalization, so the teardown sees the
session that started and its own withdrawal hook covers what that session recorded.
- regression test: an open() gated inside its reservation, a reset() landing in that gap,
both awaited. What is asserted is the leak, not a field value - performFinalReset clears
isEditing but by design keeps relPath - so the pin is the preview observation: an entry
recorded after the teardown already finished is left behind and would authorize a later
targeted edit for a file the model never read in a session nobody owns.
- controls: reset() skipping the join -> 1 failed | 188 passed (189), "expected true to be
false" on the leftover-observation assertion; reservation written but never settled at the
end of the transition -> 1 failed | 188 passed, "Test timed out in 20000ms", because the
finalization joins a transition that never ends. Both reverted byte-identically and
re-run green.
Gates (split-1833/u8, node_modules verified real): tsc --noEmit 0; eslint

Add lowest-layer unit tests for the focus-disruption path in
`applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts` (add, move destination, and same-file update),
`editFileTool.spec.ts` (new and existing file), `searchReplaceTool.spec.ts`
(update), and `writeToFileTool.spec.ts` (new and existing file). Enable the
experiment, approve the operation, and assert the complete `saveDirectly`
argument list, especially the expected `"create"` or `"update"` kind and that
`saveChanges` is not called.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Wrap the full `open()` session transition, including all pre-`openDiffEditor()`
awaits and listener setup, in a `try/finally` that always clears and settles the
reservation. In failure handling, dispose any listeners, cancel timers, undo any
owned placeholder and created directories, and restore provider state before
rethrowing. Add tests that reject an early existing-file read/save and a
create-path directory or placeholder write, then assert that `reset()` resolves
and no provider state or created filesystem resources remain.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, retained-target workspace containment applies when the caller's alias is inside task.cwd. Aliases already outside task.cwd remain permitted, subject to existing authorization. The TypeScript isInsideDirectory helper uses normalized forward-slash paths and case-insensitive comparisons on Windows without relying on path.relative, which test doubles may omit.

## ESLint Suppressions
### Typed test files
New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.

## ESLint Suppressions
When writing new code:
- Avoid `as any`; use typed APIs directly (e.g. `RooCodeEventName.X` constants with typed `on()`/`listenerCount()`), or bracket notation (`obj["privateField"]`) to access private members. Prefer precise test doubles or `unknown` with a type guard over double assertions (`as unknown as T`); use double assertions only as a last resort, with a comment explaining why.

src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts: 1
582-589: Approved ../ targets are still rejected after relative-path conversion.
EditFileTool and SearchReplaceTool turn an approved absolute target outside the workspace into a ../... relative path. That path is not absolute and it canonicalizes outside the workspace, so this clause rejects it before publication. A prior review already reported this. It is still open.
src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts: 3
244-248: open() leaves sessionStartInFlight pending after most failures.
A prior review already reported this. Only the openDiffEditor() failure branch and the normal end of open() call settleSessionStart(). If existingDocument.save(), fs.readFile(), createDirectoriesForFile(), or fs.writeFile() throws, the reservation never settles. Every later reset() then hangs at await starting.
2356-2359: The basis comparison does not normalize line endings.
A prior review already reported this. EditTool and SearchReplaceTool pass LF-normalized originalContent. This comparison uses raw disk text. For a CRLF file, the observation is recorded as incomplete, and the "update" save is rejected as a partial read.
1464-1473: Stability & Availability
The reported deadlock is not reachable through the inspected task flow. Tool dispatch is serialized, and cancellation skips later tool blocks until the current dispatch completes. The conditional promise cycle does not establish a defect in the supported caller path.
Round 5 of the Zoo-Code-Org#1916 review (three Majors from the 23:57 review of 61b31b1
plus the five from the 00:10 re-review of the same head), landed as one head.
- guardedWrite: the relative-alias fail-closed rule keys off where the lexical
path sits relative to task.cwd, so an approved outside-workspace target that
EditFileTool converts to a ../ path keeps its own authorization, while a
workspace-internal alias that canonicalizes outside still fails closed.
- open(): the whole session transition runs inside try/finally, so every exit -
a throw from existingDocument.save(), the existing-file read, directory or
placeholder creation, or undoPartialOpen() included - settles the reservation
reset() waits on. Both manual settlement sites are gone.
- observeDirectSaveBasis: normalize line endings on both sides, so a CRLF target
whose consumer normalized to LF is not downgraded to a partial read.
- saveDirectly: re-observe the whole-file basis only for "update". An "edit"
save keeps the observation ApplyDiffTool recorded, so a stale token stays
stale and a partial read stays partial until the guard has judged it.
- create rollback: stop removing created directories at the first rmdir failure
the way undoPartialOpen() does, so a peer's ENOTEMPTY cannot abort
restorePreviewTabs() and reset() and hand abortStream() a raw rejection.
- guardedWrite rejections: name the caller's own spelling, and the escaped alias
relative to the canonical root, because both reach the model through
handleError and a resolved path is a user-specific absolute path.
- safeWriteText: drop the early staging unlink in the DaclCaptureError branch.
stagingCommitted is false there, and the outer failure handler already owns
the case: it re-identifies the staging entry before removing it.
- safeWriteText integration spec: judge the ACE entries after stripping the path
icacls echoes, instead of searching the whole output.

- Around line 2282-2284: Change the direct-save flow around
observeDirectSaveBasis so it refreshes the observation only when the replacement
content was derived from the observed basis. For model-authored full-file
writes, preserve any existing observation; if none exists, record the basis as
incomplete so stale or partial reads cannot authorize the write.
- Around line 1384-1426: Update revertChanges() so Auto Save’s disk write is
treated as this session’s write: under the lock, use the stat-bracketed read
pattern from adoptAlreadyPublishedContent() and accept the disk token only when
the disk bytes exactly match the encoded current buffer. Use that token for
replaceIfVersion() on the modify path and the unlink check on the create path;
preserve RollbackConflictError when the bytes differ. Add regression tests
verifying Auto Save followed by revertChanges() restores the original bytes for
modify and removes the file for create without a conflict.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add lowest-layer tests for the enabled focus-disruption paths. In
`applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts`, cover add, move destination, and same-file
update, and assert complete `saveDirectly` arguments with `"create"` or
`"update"`; assert `saveChanges` is not called. In `editFileTool.spec.ts`, cover
new and existing files. In `searchReplaceTool.spec.ts`, cover the existing-file
update. In `writeToFileTool.spec.ts`, cover new and existing files. Enable the
experiment, approve each operation, and assert the expected write kind.
- Security Boundaries:
Treat an absolute path as workspace-scoped when its lexical path is inside
`task.cwd`; do not use `path.isAbsolute()` as the exception. Reject an
inside-workspace alias whose canonical target is outside, and require the
retained publish target to remain inside the canonical workspace. Alternatively,
normalize all in-workspace absolute inputs to relative paths before calling
`guardedWrite`. Add a regression test using an absolute in-workspace symlink
retargeted to an external file and assert that no publish occurs.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Wrap the full `runOpenTransition()` in failure cleanup. On every pre-editor
failure, dispose listeners and timers, remove only the provider-owned
placeholder, remove only directories created by this open, restore provider
state, and settle the reservation. Track partial directory creation when
`createDirectoriesForFile()` rejects. Add tests for rejected existing-file
reads, rejected directory creation, and rejected placeholder writes; assert
`reset()` resolves and no owned filesystem resources remain.

Learning: In src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, link-path advisory lock keys must canonicalize parent directories without following the final component.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, retained-target workspace containment applies when the caller's alias is inside task.cwd. Aliases already outside task.cwd remain permitted, subject to existing authorization. The TypeScript isInsideDirectory helper uses normalized forward-slash paths and case-insensitive comparisons on Windows without relying on path.relative, which test doubles may omit.

Learning: In src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, DiffViewProvider.open() intentionally records a stat-matched preview observation with complete=false only when the task has no existing observation for the path. Existing model-read observations must remain unchanged so accepted saves detect changes since the model read. Preview observations are not complete model reads; review preview version tracking separately from edit authorization.

An earlier review raised this issue, and the current code still has it. Two defects remain:
.filter((line) => line.length > 0) keeps the icacls summary line (Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files). That line has no (F). On Windows, if the publish lands with a verified narrowing, expect(entry).toContain("(F)") fails on a correct ACL.
entry.toLowerCase()).toContain(identity.toLowerCase()) is a substring check. For the user bob, it also accepts a different principal such as bob-other:(F).
acl.split(targetPath) also depends on icacls echoing the exact case of targetPath. If the echo differs, entries is empty, and the test fails for a reason unrelated to the ACL.
Proposed fix
- const entries = acl- .split(targetPath)- .slice(1)- .join(targetPath)- .split("\n")- .map((line) => line.trim())- .filter((line) => line.length > 0)+ let body = acl.trimStart()+ if (body.toLowerCase().startsWith(targetPath.toLowerCase())) {+ body = body.slice(targetPath.length)+ }+ const entries = body+ .split(/\r?\n/)+ .map((line) => line.trim())+ .filter((line) => /^.+?:(\([^()]*\))+$/.test(line))
expect(entries.length).toBeGreaterThan(0)
for (const entry of entries) {
- expect(entry.toLowerCase()).toContain(identity.toLowerCase())+ const principal = entry.slice(0, entry.indexOf(":(")).toLowerCase()+ expect(principal.split("\\").pop()).toBe(identity.toLowerCase())
expect(entry).toContain("(F)")
}
…observation on basis authority
Round 6 of the Zoo-Code-Org#1916 review (two Majors on caabad3), landed as one head.
- revertChanges(): a rejection never publishes, so the rollback bound to openToken while
Auto Save of the diff's modified document - which is the real file URI - had already put
this session's proposed edit on disk and moved the version. The rollback now recognises
its own bytes the way adoptAlreadyPublishedContent() does: a stat-bracketed read under
the same lock, compared against the encoded text of the buffer exactly as the publish
path would write it, encoding and line endings included. When they match, that version
is the session's own write and the restore - or, on the create path, the unlink - binds
to it instead of reporting a conflict no peer caused. Bytes that match neither the buffer
nor what the session left are a peer write, and RollbackConflictError still stands.
- saveDirectly(): the basis re-observation is gated on the caller's authority over the
basis (reobserveBasis) instead of on writeKind. writeKind says how the content is shaped,
not whether the writer saw the bytes it is building on, which is why gating on it gave
two reviews opposite answers about the same line. EditTool, SearchReplaceTool,
EditFileTool and ApplyPatchTool pass true: they compose their content from bytes they
just read. WriteToFileTool passes false: its bytes are the model's, so a stale, partial
or absent model observation reaches guardedWrite unchanged, as it already does on the
diff-view path. ApplyDiffTool passes false: it must keep the observation its own read
earned, so a stale token stays stale and a partial read stays partial.

Do not re-observe the move destination against the source file's basis.
handleUpdateFile sets task.diffViewProvider.originalContent to the source content (change.originalContent, Line 327). This call passes reobserveBasis: true for change.movePath. As a result, saveDirectly() runs observeDirectSaveBasis() on the destination and compares the destination bytes with the source content. The basis this tool read belongs to the source file, not to the destination.
Consequences when the destination already exists:
Destination bytes differ from the source. The model's own observation of the destination is replaced with complete: false. The move is then refused with the "only partially read" remediation, even when the model read the destination in full.
Destination bytes equal the source's original content. The destination receives a complete observation that no read earned. The "create" publish then goes through replaceIfVersion and overwrites a file the model never read. This contradicts the comment at Lines 422-423.
The destination has no basis that this tool read. Pass false so that guardedWrite() sees the destination's real observation state.

A teardown tail that calls reset() deadlocks with an overlapping open().
The deadlock follows from the code as written:
revertChanges() owns a teardown pass. Its tail (Lines 1558-1567) runs restorePreviewTabs() and then await this.reset(), while teardownInFlight is still set.
open() starts during that pass. It sets sessionStartInFlight synchronously and then waits in runOpenTransition() at await this.teardownInFlight (Line 265).
The tail calls reset(). reset() sees sessionStartInFlight and waits for it (Lines 2213-2216).
The reservation settles only when runOpenTransition() finishes. That transition waits for teardownInFlight, which waits for the tail, which waits for the reservation.
None of the three promises can settle. open() hangs, revertChanges() hangs, and abortStream() hangs with them. The comment at Lines 227-233 says open() waits on teardownInFlight because an overlapping teardown is expected, so the code itself treats this interleaving as possible. Without the deadlock, the result would still be wrong: the old session's tail would join the new session's reservation and finalize the new session.
The join is correct for an external reset() that lands in the gap. It is wrong for the old session's own teardown tail. Split the join from the finalization, and call the finalization directly from the tail.

// Join a session transition that was reserved but has not finished claiming. ...

Add a regression test for this case. Start revertChanges() with an evicted preview tab so that restorePreviewTabs() awaits. Call open() during that await. Assert that both calls resolve and that the new session stays isEditing === true.

A reset() called from the teardown tail still deadlocks with an overlapping open().
The current code still has the cycle reported in the earlier review:
The revertChanges() tail at Lines 1565-1566 runs await this.reset() while teardownInFlight is still set. runTeardown() keeps the claim until the tail settles (Lines 1698-1708).
An open() that starts during the tail sets sessionStartInFlight before its first await (Line 249). It then waits at await this.teardownInFlight (Line 265).
reset() sees sessionStartInFlight and waits for it (Lines 2213-2216).
The reservation settles only after runOpenTransition() returns. That transition waits for the teardown, and the teardown waits for reset().
As a result, open(), revertChanges(), and the abortStream() that awaits it never settle. If the cycle were broken, the old session's tail would still finalize the new session.
Split the reservation join from the finalization. Call the finalization directly from the teardown tail and from the RollbackConflictError catch.

[ERROR] 295-295: A nonliteral argument is passed to exec/execSync. Identify the receiver: Node child_process methods execute shell commands, while regular-expression and database methods have different contracts. For shell execution, prefer execFile or spawn with an argument array.
93-104: The ACE loop still asserts on the icacls summary line and still uses a substring principal check.
The previous thread on this block is still open, and this head does not change it.
.filter((line) => line.length > 0) keeps the trailing Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files line. That line contains neither the username nor (F). So when the narrowing branch runs, the loop fails on it.
entry.toLowerCase()).toContain(identity.toLowerCase()) is a substring check. For example, eason-other:(F) passes when the user is eason.
The bug sits behind if (!acl.includes("(I)")). It shows up only on a Windows runner where the narrowing path publishes. A green run where the test returned early does not prove that this branch works.
Proposed fix
- .filter((line) => line.length > 0)+ .filter((line) => /:\((?:[^()]*)\)(?:\([^()]*\))*$/.test(line))
expect(entries.length).toBeGreaterThan(0)
for (const entry of entries) {
- expect(entry.toLowerCase()).toContain(identity.toLowerCase())+ const principal = entry.slice(0, entry.indexOf(":(")).toLowerCase()+ expect(principal.split("\\").pop()).toBe(identity.toLowerCase())
expect(entry).toContain("(F)")
}

src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts: 2
430-433: Pass reobserveBasis: false for the move destination.
This head still has the defect from the open thread. task.diffViewProvider.originalContent holds the source file's content (Line 327). With true, saveDirectly() runs observeDirectSaveBasis() against change.movePath and compares the destination's bytes with the source's bytes.
If the destination exists and differs, the model's real observation of the destination is replaced with complete: false. The move is then refused as a partial read.
If the destination bytes equal the source's original content, the destination gets a complete observation that no read earned. replaceIfVersion then overwrites a file the model never read. That contradicts the comment at Lines 422-423.
Proposed fix

The ../ containment case never passes a .. segment to the helper.
path.resolve normalizes its result. path.resolve("./workspace", "../escape.txt") returns <process.cwd()>/escape.txt, which has no .. segment. The case still passes, but it does not test the normalization that its comment describes. A regression that removes path.resolve from isInsideDirectory would not fail this test.
Use a raw, unnormalized spelling of the escape. isInsideDirectory rejects it only when it normalizes the value first:

Update the guardedWrite containment test so the traversal case passes a raw,
unnormalized path containing a `..` segment instead of a value already
normalized by `path.resolve`; keep the sibling-prefix case and assert that
`guardedWrite` rejects the target without calling `mockedSafeWriteText`.

This PR routes the interactive editor's save flows - the diff view's
saveChangesandsaveDirectly- through the guard, and fixes the ordering between a save and a teardown so a cancellation can never resurrect rolled-back content: when a teardown begins while a guarded publish is in flight, the rollback waits for the publish to settle and is provably the last writer;open()serializes with the previous session's finalization so a new edit session cannot start underneath an old cleanup. The diff view is the highest-traffic write path in the extension. This is the eighth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

Description
What this PR changes:
saveChangespublishes throughguardedWriteand registers the in-flight publish; a teardown that begins during the publish is honored after the publish settles (the save reports no completed edit rather than claiming one).revertChangesclaims the cancellation first, then waits for the in-flight guarded publish before rolling back - the rollback is provably the last writer (verified with a barrier test).open()waits for a prior session's finalization or teardown before starting the new session, and the cancellation claim is cleared with the teardown marker on a clean start.saveDirectlyforwards a caller-supplied completeness flag through the direct publish, so a tool-level write can state whether the destination was fully observed. Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on
mainand carries its own copy of the earlier units' content (guarded-write core, observation registry, atomic publish, lock key), which the GitHub diff shows as context. This unit's own delta is 486 lines.Review focus:

fe6ff685d -> 36e3f86b: fixes the open CodeRabbit Major (save-lifecycle race atDiffViewProvider.ts:1096). The publish gate released whenguardedWrite()settled, but a rejected save keeps working the same bytes and tabs afterwards: the adoption probe reads the disk and the discard cleanup reloads the buffer and closes the session's views. The whole rejected-save decision is now one registered pass (rejectedSaveCleanupInFlight) thatrevertChanges()waits on, and the discard cleanup recordsrejectedSaveCleanupHandledso a cancellation arriving after it finalizes the session without applying or savingoriginalContent(adoption-success rejections keep rollback-last). Regression tests: cancellation during the probe waits for the decision and keeps the rollback last; cancellation after the cleanup skips the rollback and finalizes exactly once. Negative controls: removing the gate await reddens only the probe test; removing the handled-session check reddens only the skip test.DiffViewProvider.tswere removed with this touch. Equivalence notes for the mutation gate: (1) thewriteKinddefault"update"- an empty kind dispatches exactly like"update"inguardedWrite(only"edit"and"create"branch distinctly); the default line itself is unchanged, so no mutant enters the changed-line selector. (2) thesaveTask &&operand in the adoption condition -GuardRejectedErroris only thrown byguardedWrite, which is reached only after the!saveTaskcheck has thrown a plain Error, so whenever the operand is evaluatedsaveTaskis provably non-null; the moved condition lines are killed by the existing adoption-rejection tests (non-guard failure with matching disk, dirty buffer with matching disk, external-writer match).6485f0636 -> fe6ff685dlint-budget fix for the spec casts (no behavior change); description rewritten for human reviewers and linked to issue 2023.Get in Touch

Re-review round (5a04426)
Cleared the three re-review threads:
notation for private members and documented structural doubles
(
as unknown as vscode.TextEditor/TextDocument); the spec'sno-explicit-anysuppression count drops 310 -> 285, no additions.counts matching
console.errorcalls (exactly 1); the weaker secondtoHaveBeenCalledWithand the stale "failed backup" comment are gone.Negative control: a duplicated report reddens exactly this test.
publishOverLinkthe backup stepnow
lstats the target and takes no content backup for a symboliclink: no referent bytes are copied, nothing is renamed back over the
link, and no copy is left beside it. Two regression tests (link: no
backup, commit lands; regular file: backup kept and cleaned).
Negative controls: guard disabled /
!== trueeach redden exactly thelink test; dropping the lstat operand reddens exactly the
regular-file test.
Equivalent mutant (no suppression, per AGENTS.md): dropping the
publishOverLinkoperand of the guard is equivalent, because withoutpublishOverLinkthe publish target is dereferenced byresolvePublishTargetand can never be a symbolic link - the lstatthen always reports a non-link.
DACL-over-link refusal (3624e4f)
Re-review follow-up: a captured-DACL publish whose target is a symbolic
link (
publishOverLink+lstatsymlink +daclDumpPathset) is nowrefused BEFORE the commit rename with a new
DaclPublishRefusedError(exported with the
DaclCaptureError/DaclRestoreErrorfamily, sameshape): the rename would replace the link itself and the DACL restore
would apply the saved ACEs to the wrong object. The error states the
target is unchanged; neither
/restorenor the restrictive fallbackruns.
DaclCaptureErrordoes not fit (capture succeeded);DaclRestoreErrordoes not (no rollback occurred).Regression test + negative controls: refusal removed -> exactly the new
test reddens; refusal unconditional -> exactly the no-DACL linux
symlink test reddens (that path still publishes with no backup).
The refusal also updates
safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts(f23e49f):its two unscoped symlink publishes previously pinned the old win32
publish-over-link-with-ACL behavior; they now branch on
process.platform(win32:DaclPublishRefusedError, locks stillserialized,
/saveonly, link bytes untouched; linux: originalassertions unchanged).
Scope registration: the safeWriteJson carrier on this unit
The confinement, symlink lock-selection and platform-DACL expectations
in
src/utils/safeWriteJson.tsand its tests are deliberate on thisunit, not scope drift. The guarded-write chain's unit map - tracking
issue 1991 - assigns this carrier here: its section "Port source:
folding a lock key the way the lock is placed (owed on U8, PR 1916)"
records the lock-key folding derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit
5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), including the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test; and the ownership ruling in the same
issue keeps primitive-level ports on the unit whose branch carries
that version of the primitive ("Inherited by any unit whose branch
carries this version of the primitive - U1 and U8 among them").
Removing the carrier from this PR would strand the port the tracking
issue owes on U8.
Walkthrough rows 1-4 (c6b3e86)
1. Out of Scope - sharpened pre-emption. The proposed resolution
("move the
safeWriteJsonchanges to the file-safety unit") wouldbreak the owed-port chain, not restore scope: the
safeWriteJsonlock-key folding ON THIS BRANCH IS the port - tracking issue 1991,
section "Port source: folding a lock key the way the lock is placed
(owed on U8, PR 1916)", records it derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit
5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), with the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test tracked there.
The
resolve/lock/version-check alias race in
replaceIfVersionis thestanding confinement-primitive window, not a defect introduced here:
the check and the publish already run inside ONE acquisition of the
shared advisory lock keyed by
resolveLockKey(a symlink alias andits referent share one lock), and the primitive's docstring states the
atomicity boundary and the no-lock writer explicitly. Closing the
resolve-to-lock alias swap is the directory-identity pinning that is
U5's (PR 1914) content, which merges BEFORE this unit in the declared
order - the row resolves at merge time. Same family as the TOCTOU row
registered on PR 1918 (see record 6106959976 on 1408) and the
primitive-level ruling in tracking issue 1991.
3. Regression Evidence - fixed in c6b3e86. New spec
core/task/__tests__/Task.observationRegistry.spec.tsconstructs twoREAL Task instances (same construction path as
Task.dispose.test.ts,startTask: false) and asserts both exposeObservationRegistry, are NOT the same object, and that anobservation recorded on one is absent from the other. Negative
control: swapping the field initializer for a module-shared registry
reddens exactly this test (1 failed | 13 passed across the two
registry specs). The existing unit spec is untouched. 14/14 green,
eslint/prettier/tsc clean.
4. Lifecycle warning - registered, HOLD family. The
open()/reset()double-await race is the teardown-waiter familyrecorded in tracking issue 1991, record 8 ("U9 teardown: the waiter
cannot tell whether the pass it waited for succeeded (PR 1917 / PR
1918 - fix once and port)"). The fix belongs to the U9 teardown
content and is owed there once; the carried copies on this unit
resolve at merge time in the declared order. Not a U8-level defect
per the same primitive-level ruling.
Preview-withdrawal port (82cfbf2)
The sibling unit's Major finding (preview observation surviving on the
non-edit exit paths) applies identically to the DiffViewProvider copy
this unit owns, so the fix is ported here as well (this unit merges
first):
open()records the token its preview wrote;performFinalReset()- the single execution point behindreset()-forgets the entry while it still holds that token and the preview's
incomplete flag. Trigger-sequence test + two survival tests ported;
negative control: disabling the withdrawal reddens exactly the trigger
test. 166/166 green.
Ownership-based withdrawal (a00c5b7)
The withdrawal now tracks the exact entry object the preview wrote
(
{ path, entry }identity) instead of version+completeness: a modelpartial read while the diff is open replaces the entry with a fresh
object at the same token and flag, and survives
reset(). Regressiontest + two NCs (each exactly one red). 167/167 green. Ported to the
sibling unit's identical copy (14f8634).
Re-review responses (error-fix re-review wave)
guardedWrite(Major Data-Integrity): theguard now resolves with the token it read back under its lock;
saveChanges()records it as the rollback baseline and the comparisonprefers it over the create placeholder, so a session's own publish is never
mistaken for a peer write and a peer write is never silently overwritten.
New end-to-end spec case (real save -> peer stat change -> rollback
conflict); the two chain tests that pinned the old void contract now assert
the returned token.
open()andperformFinalReset()clear the rollback baseline with the other sessionfields; a reused provider cannot inherit the previous session's token and
report a false conflict. Two regression tests added.
rollback restores the evicted preview tabs and claims the finalization
before the conflict propagates; the peer-publish test now asserts the
session is finalized after the rejection.
The rollback now
publishes the original bytes through
replaceIfVersion: the versioncheck and the publish happen inside one acquisition of the shared
advisory lock, with
lastWrittenTokenas the expected version. A CASrejection preserves the peer's bytes and raises
RollbackConflictErrornaming the disk token it found; on success the buffer is reconciled by
reverting onto the published bytes instead of saving over them. Where
either side of the comparison is missing (never published, or no disk
version evidence) there is nothing to bind the publish to and the save
fallback remains, documented as such.
Rollback evidence contract (096abc2)
The 05:51Z Persistence Integrity row implemented in full: every existing-file rollback publishes the original bytes through the atomic compare-and-swap; when the session baseline or the current disk version is unavailable the rollback preserves the disk state and raises
RollbackConflictErrorinstead of saving (the unguardedupdatedDocument.save()fallback is removed); the create rollback unlinks only on a proven token match under the file lock - unknown ownership (identity-only or failed stat-bracketed open) or a mismatch preserves the path and the created directories and reports the conflict. The buffer is reconciled by reverting onto the CAS-published bytes. Tests: missing-baseline and missing-disk-evidence rollbacks, identity-only create peer replacement, plus the tab-close/ordering tests updated to the revert contract. 177/177 green; three negative controls pin the contract (evidence gate, create ownership, revert-vs-save).The Security Boundaries alias row remains the registered ApplyDiffTool alias family (lands once at the publish-primitive owner; precedent record 6106959976, issue #1408).
Allowlist binding to the retained target (bf09481)
The 08:21Z Security Boundaries row implemented in full:
replaceIfVersionandcreateIfAbsenttake anauthorizeTargetcallback run under the lock on the RETAINED publish target before the version comparison and the publish; the guarded-write entry re-runsrooIgnoreController.validateAccesson the retained target, so a retargeted symlink or hard-link alias cannot receive approved bytes in an ignored/external file. Both identity locks (referent key + alias-entry key viaresolveLinkPathLockKey) are taken in the shared sorted order when distinct. Tests: denial before version comparison, retained-target binding, end-to-end alias-passes/referent-ignored rejection, sorted dual-key acquisition, single-lock fold; four negative controls pin each element. 62/62 guardedWrite, 239/239 with the diff-view suites. The cited retained-target block exists only in this unit's copy; no U-family port applies. The Regression Evidence row (safeWriteJson multi-lock cleanup test) remains carrier content: the test belongs to the safeWriteJson owner unit (scope registration above).
